Which brands do 11 year old boys like?

and which are "worth" the price tag?

Eldest DS (11) needs a new hoody. He likes the skater/boarder look. Has just started high school and wants to look cool. If I even begin to ask him about brands etc he will suss and there will be no surprise!

I don't usually buy "branded" stuff for him. However, he has been talking about how he finds it awkward to make friends etc and I was being mindful of this when deciding what to buy for him because unfortunately, in some circles, the brand does matter at this age already. We encourage him to believe in himself but clothing is an obvious way to help him feel more at ease.

He is definitely more of a surfer than sporty. He does like some Johnnie B things but that is also because he is a polite boy who smiles appreciatively at most things I buy for him :). Just trying to help my boy "fit in" a bit more so not really any need for the sarcasm, thanks cybbo.

If he's in to skating and/or snowboarding, I'd go for Vans

Gertiegoolash · 22/11/2011 19:36

Hollister, Fred Perry, Ralph Lauren according to DS who's 12

Bellavita · 22/11/2011 19:48

Superdry here.

Wailywailywaily · 22/11/2011 19:52

Salt rock, kangeroo poo and Fat Face only if no where near his skater friends according to my 11yo DS who is a skater boy

Wailywailywaily · 22/11/2011 19:53

What I mean is he would prefer Saltrock or Kangaroo Poo

Jellykat · 22/11/2011 20:24

I'd second snowmummys Vans, and also DC - they're the classic skateboard makes.
Route One, and Surfdome are very good online sites to buy from.

ds1 (10 next week) loves Adidas and Nike -also loves hoodies with general sports-type logos - from crappy JJB-type shops... Hmm. He also loves ridiculously baggy jeans that I keep having to hitch up...

Alouisee · 23/11/2011 07:34

14 yr old ds is currently into tan coloured chinos, as are all his friends, it's like a uniform! They like polo shirts and zip up hoodies on the top half. Ds loves Abercrombie but that means US trips or getting friends to send stuff. Superdry is an acceptable alternative! I refused to queue to go not Hollister so he's been deprived of that so far, much to his disgust.

Ds2 13.5 doesn't give a damn about brands except for shoes which must be vans. He lives in cargo pants or jeans with any old t shirt and hoodie. He likes to wear checked shirts if we o "somewhere smart"

They couldn't be more different.

''11 year old boys?! Hollister?! Why start your child off on being 'brand' aware in the first place''

Because I have a wonderfully thoughful, caring, lovely happy son and if he wants a Hollister hoodie, I'll do my best to buy him one.

If that's OK with you, like. Smile

Bellavita · 23/11/2011 11:05

Here here Flossie!

Alouisee · 23/11/2011 11:49

I don't think that us as parents make them brand aware, it comes from their peers and probably MTV.

Gillybobs · 23/11/2011 12:01

I so agree, Ive never encouraged my 2 down the brand route (quite the opposite), its something that happens naturally and depending on the kid could be at any age between 5 and 15! My boys arent spoiled or particularly into designer stuff but if they really really fancy a nice hoody then I may treat them for their birthday/good school report etc and I see nothing wrong with that.

KWL51 · 23/11/2011 14:40

Queues for hollister? Not in our local store, ok it's so dark your not quite sure what you've brought until you come out but no queues.

Ds is 14 and into the skater look until now he was into slim leg jeans dd or vans hoodies and t shirts. Now it's chinos from republic and the white label no label zip or non zip hoodies which is great as they are £12-15 unlike the hollister and jack wills that he used to like.

Rafaella · 23/11/2011 17:46

Here's a link - all good stuff - says my DS (11)
cool hoodies

Jellykat · 23/11/2011 19:38

See my post above Rafaella Smile
Their customer service is amazing too, a rare occurrence these days

meltedchocolate · 23/11/2011 20:04

A skater brand would be DC (I used to like this style about 5 years ago in my yoof, this was my brand) or Etnies, or Vans. These are skater styles, so if that is what he is into, that is what I would go for.

meltedchocolate · 23/11/2011 20:05

Argh, looks like I was beaten to it

cruelladepoppins · 23/11/2011 20:54

DS was looking for a hoodie the other week and is just getting choosy. He suggested Superdry - we had a look online but both balked at the price!

He likes Canterbury - don't tell me they are old hat where you live ...? All the kids here love them. But then again we are in Sticksville [hayseed emoticon] and they don't differentiate between different brands for different activities ..!
