Is there such a thing as a comfortable bra?

I recently got properly measured and it turns out that I was wearing bras several cup sizes too small - I have gone from a wearable D cup to a really uncomfortable EE.

OK so it is logical to suggest that if I was reasonably comfortable in my D's why not keep them? well, the problem is that a D cup does not actually hold and support the breast tissue.

The EE cup holds everything in but the underwire digs into my armpits...

I have several bras of various sizes between 36 D and 34 EE and nothing is wearable after a couple of hours (apart from my sports bra but that doesn't count). I have several different brands and the best so far is Triumph but its not perfect.

Please help, I just want to wear the same bra from morning to night without being red raw by the end of the day. What is your most comfortable bra?

My best now is Just Peachy by Figleaves - am a 36G. Pre kids when I was a 36f I used to wear Lepel.

bucketbetty · 20/11/2011 21:08

Hi OP, I'm a 32ff and Figleaves are definitely the best for bigger cup size. I'm afraid the bigger we are the less comfortable we're likely to be. I always buy Figleaves, they really are in my experience the best for the bigger bust.

Watching with interest. I find the middle part of underwire digs into my ribs but plunge bras which have a lower end point for the underwire make me feel like I'm "falling out". Yet to find a good non wired solution either

I used to have the same problem and as soon as I was settled in at home I would lose the bra for comforts sake.
Then I happened upon a M&S bra, one in a box. Not padded, pretty, underwired. Costs £12 and comes in a variety of similarish fabrics, in black, white, beige, navy, denim, pink. I now have one of each and am very happy Smile

What about just wearing sports bras?

LydiaWickham · 20/11/2011 21:10

Get measured again. Make sure it's in a shop that sells EE cups (so they aren't tempted to tell you you are a smaller size so you can actually buy something).

Wailywailywaily · 20/11/2011 21:14

Sports bras are bliss but they just strap everything down. I would like to have too boobs :)

Balconette bra's are great for lift, style and comfort.

Wailywailywaily · 20/11/2011 21:16

I will try figleaves, I have bought from them in the past but never their own brand

I'd love balconette but my breasts seem to go outwards as opposed to forward, if you see what I mean

I echo the plea for more comfortable bras in bigger cup sizes especially. Can anyone recommend some non-wired as well as wired brands that fit the bill? I like to be able to wear both and have had huge trouble getting any non-wired larger cup bras that aren't Triumph Doreen.

PacificDogwood · 20/11/2011 21:19

I am surprised, nobody had linked to Bravissimo yet - I am a convert Grin!

They don't measure you, just look at you and give a range of bras to try.
I have never looked as good, nor felt as comfy before

Seriously, if it feasible to visit one of their shops, go.

Truffkin · 20/11/2011 21:20

My favourite bra find is Bravissimo's 'Alana' and I've had the underwire digging in under my armpits with other Bravissimo bras, it depends how high they are cut.

I'm a 38H and 9 months pregnant but can still wear the Alana all day without discomfort.

teenyweenytadpole · 20/11/2011 21:21

I have this exact problem. I went to Bravissimo for a fitting and the bra they put me in lifts and supports and all that but really digs in under my arms. Red raw indeed. My crappy old saggy old M&S bras don't rub at all but don't do anything for my actual boobs. I am quite short waisted so wonder if that might be part of the problem. Also to be honest I need to lose weight and if I did I could probably wear a smaller cup size which would solve the problem. So for now I just save the uncomfortable bra for special occasions!

PassTheTwiglets · 20/11/2011 21:22

I find that my real size (as measured by Bravissimo) is uncomfortable but the next back size up is fine. I feel like they are just too tight in the proper size but they always insist that's what I should wear. And I can tell that the next size up is too big. So it's either being comfy or looking ok, but not both as far as I can tell :(

Wailywailywaily · 20/11/2011 21:27

Pacific many thanks there is a shop close to me so I'll try it.
It may sound funny but I have never thought of myself as being large so it never even occurred to me to try Bravissimo! I now realise that 34 EE is actually a rather large size Grin and I really need to get a grip

Freya from Debenhams are good for larger sizes. I am a 32FF, and live in my Freya bras. They are a bit pricey (around £32 each), but they are v comfortableand supportive.

smokinaces · 20/11/2011 21:36

Gorgeous range by Debenhams is amazing. Start from £12, designed for bigger boobs and brilliant. The trick is not to go for a style available in an A cup to G cup as they just dont work - go for something from a range catering for DD to G, they will be cut better for bigger boobs.

Its taken me a long time to find comfortable bras that dont rub. Every time I buy a different style I am back to my Gorgeous range ones within a couple of days.

ThatsNotMyBabyBelly · 20/11/2011 22:08

Also take a look at Primark - incredibly. There DD+ range is really good for the money

Wailywailywaily · 21/11/2011 10:15

If I could find a bra that I could live in I would pay£32 and more!

I have some M&S bras but they don't seem to wash well ( I wont hand wash..)

I have a Fraya one and the wire cuts in at the cleavage but not under the arms
