birthday party in Jan

We've been invited to a relative's 60th birthday at the beginning of January. We'll be staying at the hotel where the party is being held, so no issues re travelling through snow and ice in my party frock - but still I'm not sure what to wear. I don't want to look 'Christmassy' (it'll be 7th Jan). Also this is likely to be quite a smart do (champagne reception, instructions for helicopters included in the 'how to get there' part of the invite...) - I have a frock bought for a recent wedding - but I feel it's too 'weddingy'.

First question - dress or trousers?

I'm 51, size 10, 5'8", can't wear high heels. Budget isn't tight, but hey, it's just after Christmas so lets not go crazy.

Anyone? No matter - I'll wear the cleaner jeans and that top that was fashionable 2 years ago. It'll be fine.

Def a dress. Phase eight have some nice wrap dresses in just now?

suzikettles · 20/11/2011 18:56

Definitely a dress. I'd be tempted to wait until Dec 26th to buy it though..

Oh yes definitely a dress and lordy - you have a model figure so finding a frock isn't going to be hard.

What colours do you like and do you mind showing arms?

MrsCampbellBlack · 20/11/2011 18:59

This is lovely

Classic dvf Not everyone's cup of tea but I love them

I don't know how not-tight your budget is - and this is fantasy shopping for me - but I really like this Stella McCartney dress. Might feel a bit plain if you can't do heels?

tethersend · 20/11/2011 19:16

Since you've not mentioned budget...

Helmut Lang

Full length Jaeger (well you did say there would be helicopters Wink)

Twenty8Twelve

Hoss

Nicole Farhi

Isabel de pedro

oo - great ideas. I'm particularly loving the Helmut Lang creation. Also love the Jaeger long frock, although it might be a bit OTT. Stella McCartney is fab too, but I'm sure I can find something along the same lines for a tad less money. As I said, budget isn't too tight - and this is a family do. 'Tis important to 'ahem' get it right. We won't be in a helicopter ourselves, but we don't want to let the side down, if you know what I mean...

Now - shoes - and tights/stockings. I can manage about a one inch heel.

If you go for the helmut lang, I would go for some patent platforms like this.

joanofarchitrave · 20/11/2011 20:39

Oh that Helmut Lang dress is incredible :)
