????? Any good ones without that horrid smell?

Performance wise, what gets your vote?

No

The stuff that makes self tan work is the stuff that makes it smell (dha) so there is no getting away from it. You can get ' make up ' style ones that look good and don't smell but they wash off as soon as you have a bath or shower.

Tan Organic (www.tanorganic.com) doesn't smell but it's not a gradual one. Nice natural tan though. It's a brown liquid.

I think the Kiehls one is the best and it doesn't have a strong smell. It's a lotion. Never streaks and always looks, like I've just had a couple of days in the sun.

The Dove gradual tanner is also a very good budget option and it's quite heavily perfumed so doesn't have the tan smell.

HouseOfBamboo · 19/11/2011 11:24

I do find the Dove one smells of DHA, as all the other 'develop over time' ones do. They might smell pleasant at first but when the DHA kicks in after about half an hour they all smell the same.

I think some people are more susceptible to the DHA smell than others though, both in how 'smelly' they get (depends on skin type I think) and how sensitive they are to the smell. I score high on both Grin

ENormaSnob · 19/11/2011 12:38

They all stink IMO

I like the garnier one best. Just as good as the st tropez one.

That is not true. Some do not smell at all. Aviva is probably the best, but don't think you can get it in the UK. Famous Dave is also good. You can definitely buy that in the UK. Stay away from Zen Tan, it does not smell but it is a bit greasy.

HouseOfBamboo · 19/11/2011 13:19

I haven't tried Famous Dave but I remain sceptical. It contains DHA just like all the others. There marketing schtick is good (lots of pH science about dyeing meat) but they claim it doesn't smell because they don't add perfumes to cover up the smell Confused That's like saying poo doesn't smell just because you don't use smelly air fresheners, surely?

However as I say I haven't tried it, but having been stung for £££ by St Tropez products that apparently 'don't smell at all and won't turn you orange' (it does and they do) I'm not risking it again.

MarieFromStMoritz · 19/11/2011 13:22

St Tropez is shit. Fake tans have moved on so much since then.

And I can guarantee that they don't smell like they used to in the old days.

HouseOfBamboo · 19/11/2011 13:30

But if no substitute for DHA has been found, what is so different about the 'new' ones? I'm genuinely curious.

The only ones I've ever used that don't smell have been the wash-off body bronzers that don't contain DHA (eg Vita Liberata).

MarieFromStMoritz · 19/11/2011 14:15

I don't know, HoB. I am genuinely interested, also. I have an Aviva spray tan done every Thursday night, and it does not smell at all. Just for you HoB, as an experiment, I am going to use some Famous Dave tonight and see what my DH says when he gets home. He has the most sensitive nose in the world and hates the fake tan smell even more than I do.

HouseOfBamboo · 19/11/2011 14:56

okay Grin No 'faking' the results now Wink

MarieFromStMoritz · 19/11/2011 14:59

Ooh, I love a good pun Grin

MarieFromStMoritz · 19/11/2011 15:36

OK, DH back from work. Applied Famous Dave all over 30 mins ago. His verdict:

"A bit of a chemical smell, but nothing like she used to smell years ago [when I used St Tropez and Fake Bake]. The old stuff used to make her and our bed stink. The new stuff is fine. The most recent stuff she is using [Aviva] does not smell at all and it makes her skin feel really smooth and nice. Don't know about this Dave stuff. She doesn't smell now apart from this faint chemical smell. I'll let you know how she smells tomorrow".

Hmm
HouseOfBamboo · 19/11/2011 18:01

Arf at 'I'll let you know how she smells tomorrow'. Thank you Mr Marie for the report Grin

I want to know more about the faint chemical smell, has it developed at all?

MarieFromStMoritz · 20/11/2011 02:29

DH's quick report before he heads off for work:

"Nah, no smell at all".

So there you go. I am also a rather nice shade of brown Grin

HouseOfBamboo · 20/11/2011 22:11

Thanks for the sniff update! Grin

I'd still have to sniff it to believe it as far as my skin is concerned, my skin seems to be ridiculously fertile territory for fake tan pong Hmm Oh well, maybe next summer..!

Spooklegeek · 20/11/2011 22:53

Avon Skin So Soft airbrush spray. Brilliant. And it evaporates immediately, so you can dress straight away (not even a 1-min wait, I mean straight away). I use it every other day in the summer to maintain the colour, or if you want to build up something more full-on, then every day. It's usually half price so about £2.60 I think & I get through a bottle a week in the summer. HTH.
