What beauty 'wisdom' do you think is rubbish?

MarieFromStMoritz · 19/11/2011 04:11

Mine are:

Do not shave the same day as applying fake tan
Why? I always shave about half an hour before applying fake tan. If you shave the day before, then you will have a lovely tan - but stubbly legs.

Apply blusher to the apple of your cheeks
Unless you are under 30, applying blusher to the apples of your cheeks can make your face look flat and your cheeks sunken. It is much more flattering to apply blusher to your cheekbones then blend inwards.

Wait for mascara to dry before applying second coat
Why? I never wait and never have problems.

Applying eye liner all around your eyes makes them appear bigger
This is from Bobbi Brown and it's rubbish, IMO. If you want your eyes to appear bigger, then do not apply liner to the inner corners. Instead, apply from 1/3 in going outwards, getting thicker as you go along.

Never apply lip liner to outside your natural lip line
I always go outside my natural lip line. It makes my lips look plumper, especially when I apply it well into the corners. Add a generous coat of lip gloss and almost anyone can have luscious lips.

What are yours?

much of the skincare advice is bollocks.
Agree about removing make up completely unnecessary

jasper · 21/11/2011 03:58

by the end of the day most of your makeup has slid off anyway, unless you wear make up in the style of Jodie Marsh

jasper · 21/11/2011 03:59

yes, chugging down eight+ glasses of water a day irrespective of your thirst is a complete pile of crapola

nooka · 21/11/2011 04:11

I think probably 99% of it is total tosh. dh used to get Men's Health which was full of little 'research' snippets most of which were done for such a short period of time and with such small groups that they were utterly meaningless. I doubt the 'research' behind the reduce wrinkle poultices are is any better.

Clarabumps · 21/11/2011 07:00

What amelia and jeremy said. This is actually hilarious and its actually kind of clatty going to bed without washing your face- unless you change your bedsheets every day. Yuck!
And as for the water thing- it does make a difference to your skin. You probably can't notice it though as your skin is covered in 12 days of old make up.

allhailtheaubergine · 21/11/2011 07:50

I don't take my make-up off before bed, but only because I am being sluttish. I only wear make-up about 4 times a year, and I invariably get plastered at whatever event I have deemed auspicious enough to bung on some slap for, and then I roll in and fall disgustingly into bed stinking of vodka and fags and wake up in the morning looking like Bett Lynch. I do not kid myself this is better for my skin. Not wearing make-up for the other 361 days a year probably is though.

Alibabaandthe80nappies · 21/11/2011 08:03

Well I take my makeup off every night and I have fabulous skin!

Bleugh to the lipliner thing - OP I expect you look a bit daft but don't realise it Wink

Havingkittens · 21/11/2011 08:23

I didn't actually advocate not taking off make up, or say that it was good for your skin. I said that it was nonsense that not taking your make up ages you. I don't go to bed with my make up on so much anymore, but did when I was younger, like the above poster, mostly after a late night out or a very long shift at work. I certainly never got up and put more make up on over the top though, that's definitely grim. lol.

worldgonecrazy · 21/11/2011 08:40

I have to wash my make up off before bedtime otherwise I get pimples on my nose.

I disagree with the OPs blusher post. I spent until the age of 35 applying blusher in an "80s" style to the cheekbones. Then one day I had a makeover at a beauty counter, she applied a blusher to the apples of my cheeks and I swear it took another 5 years off me. Perhaps you're using the wrong colour or maybe it's to do with face shapes. I have an oval/square face, I can see it would look wrong on a round face.

The beauty myth I disagree with (another Bobby Brown one!) is that your make up only needs to look good from a distance. If I'm doing a fancy job because I'm going somewhere posh I use a magnifying mirror because I know if my make up looks perfect very close up, it will look great from a distance.

ameliagrey · 21/11/2011 08:48

Thumbwitch
I wasn't advocating using expensive creams anyway.

They are a rip off- but what matters is finding something that suits your skin.

If water goes near my face , I end up with dry skin- as the water where I live is very hard.

Nothing you put on your face can hold back the years-except sun block, and as I had eczema once, I was advised during specialist treatment to use a sun block- and have for 20+ years now, every day.

In my case, this and no alcohol or caffeine ( for medical reasons only) has i think helped my skin.

All moisturisers do the same- stop water evaporating and make the skin's surface a bit softer. Some products irritate due to the ingredients being harsh or having perfume, but otherwise you may as well spend £3 as £300.

If you do not clean your face somehow before going to bed, think how mucky your hadns are at the end of a day- would you go 24 hrs without washing your hands? gross. And your hadns will always transfer bacteria to your face.

Trills · 21/11/2011 08:52

"I do X and I have great skin" is not a recommendation for doing X.

Samples sizes, people.

"I do Y and my skin is shit" is equally not a reason to not do Y.

Some people just naturally have different skin to others.

ChinaInYourHands · 21/11/2011 09:07

Drinking lots of water does have without any doubt a positive effect on skin

SparkyDuchess · 21/11/2011 09:26

yuck at the idea of not taking make-up off, although I agree it doesn't age your skin. It is revolting though.

And not matching foundation to skin tone? That's how you get that gorgeous orange tidemark at your jaw/neck. My SIL was the world's worst - and she used to remove her makeup by wiping her face on her dressing gown each morning before re-applying. Lovely...

PinotHolidaysAreComing · 21/11/2011 12:29

what trills said

Trills · 21/11/2011 12:31

Thanks Pinot :)

CointreauVersial · 21/11/2011 15:24

My pillow is always clean as a whistle, so I guess what little make-up I wear has worn off by bedtime.

said · 21/11/2011 16:11

The water thing is definitely tosh. You get enough from food and other drinks.

Gertiegoolash · 21/11/2011 17:19

I said I never take my makeup off before bedtime, I do wash my face in the morning before I put more make-up on though, so I'm not that minging am I? Grin

meltedchocolate · 21/11/2011 17:24

Whoever said moisturiser gives you more wrinkles, that doesn't even make sense... Moisturised skin bounces back easier, dry skin will leave deeper wrinkles because it is less able to bounce back.

I seriously think getting plenty of sleep is something that will help everyone.

corygal · 21/11/2011 17:24

Biggest, hairiest, oldest but stubbornest myth: that yer pricy moisturisers change anything but the appearance of your skin.

If they did they would be medical products & you would have to get them on prescription.

ThatsNotMyBabyBelly · 21/11/2011 17:42

Erm sorry are people trying to tell me that pentapeptides don't work Shock ?!!

Expensive face creams are pointless, spf far more important. I think lack of water does affect your skin, as skin is mainly water I thought, and without it I get horrible constipated. TMI?

BarbieDahl · 21/11/2011 19:27

squeezing sopts doesn't make them worse and eating crusts doesn't make your hair curl.

post · 21/11/2011 20:00

My skin is so much better since I stopped moisturising at night. Daytime, yes, but I just wash with water at night now.

Chandon · 21/11/2011 20:12

agree with the idiocy of religious water drinking.

I just makes you wee.

just drink when you'r thirsty, job done (but do you remember the panicky feeling when we all learned, in the 80s, that "by the time you are thirsty it is TOO late!!! TOO LATE!!!!" Actually, no, you're not dead yet so still in time.)

I was also told that eating chocolate gives you spots Confused

aquavit · 22/11/2011 10:04

Barbie, I ate all my crusts and my hair is very curly
