Moncler? North Face? What else is there?

I need a WARM winter coat. Moncler is out of my price range but I'm keeping an eye out on ebay. Have also considered North Face Metropolis.

I'm thinking of something belted/tailored as my current winter coat (8 years old) is knee length and shapeless and I look a disgrace in it.

Help please!

Do you want an outdoor gear jacket eg North Face type OR a fashion-type tailored coat ie a wool coat?

What size and shape are you? What's the budget?

I've seen sporty/outdoor jackets in Sweaty Betty that are smart enough for fashion winter wear and are also belted but they might be out of your price range.

Not a wool coat, some sort of puffy thing. Budget is negotiable, am looking at everything at the moment. Needs to be warm enough for minus temps.

5'6, size 6-8.

Merrell is very highly rated on MN.

I would not recommend the northface metropolis unless you live in a 100% DRY COLD climate. I have one. It cost £150. I live in Scotland. It rains. I get very very wet as the down soaks up water like a sponge. (perhaps you know that it would not be even water resistant I did not) if you don't need to be able to wear it in the rain then maybe.

If you want something water proof I would recommend:

I have a Merill wakefield - very nice but in my opnion small made (M is 10 rather than 12 I think)

Have a look at seasalt they have a few nice options

Have you heard of Duvetica ? Look them up, their coats are very warm and waterproof. You can get a variety of lengths, colours, with or without a hood etc. They are similar to Moncler but cost less. Not sure where you can get them in England though.

Lands' End has a range of shaped down coats.

Uniqlo also.

Berghaus do nice duvet coats

I have this barbour and I love it and have received several compliments on it too.

I have the Merrell Wakefield insulated (on offer at Taunton Leisure). Very stylish in the red, and no duvet wearing appearance! Is lovely and warm, though don't know if would manage the Siberian temps we're due. Agree with sizing, am a size 10 and have the medium which is great.
Also rate The North Face Arctic Parka, but much more of an investment price wise.
Seasalt have some lovely ones too.
Good luck:)

North Face and Moncler are a long way apart in terms of budget! MaxMara have some lush ones or Joseph or Comptoir des Cotonniers (in decreasing order of cost).

I love my lands end shimmer down
Coat. It looks brilliant.

Patagonia do some nice ones.

Thanks everyone. It really does need to be as warm as possible; and it's a dry cold climate (inc. snow).

Moncler are obviously the most expensive but people keep telling me they're the warmest; and I've seen some bargains on ebay. But North Face also have a good rep. for being light and very warm.

Hmm. Mulling further.
