make up colours for red heads?

Dd has just started wanting to wear makeup so i thought I might get her a couple of little bits for her stocking fillers. I want her to look nice and not like a clown with a face full of slap so could you red heads out there tell me which colours suit you the best?

She is a fairly blonde red - not deep dark or very rusty red. A bit like this

Plums, greens, shimmery taupes and bronzes are nice on eyes. Peach, coral, browny pinks, & berry tones on cheeks and lips.

TobyLeWolef · 16/11/2011 15:13

I tend to wear plums and greens on my eyes.

I bought a half-price Fearne Cotton eye pencil gift set last Christmas. It had a purple, a green and a black. It was awesome. They're very soft, thick pencils. Like kohl, but fat pencils, if that makes sense!

I'm not sure if these are the same.

I don't wear blusher or lipstick, so I can't help with that.

wildfig · 16/11/2011 16:23

I really love a sweep of turquoise eyeliner, with a touch of mascara to define the lashes - if you stick to very neutral blush/lip colour, it doesn't look too overdone, and is really pretty on pale skins, sort of mermaidy/elfish. Boots 17 does surprisingly good eyeliner pencils; probably just No7 in different packaging.

It's easy to look 'coloured in' when you're pale - everything seems a bit more intense. Brown, or brown-black mascara is probably enough at the moment, and tinted balms in plummy colours would be just enough colour for lips - Burts Bees are nice.

DD1 (21) is a bit like Kirsten Dunst's colouring too. Her skin is possibly a bit paler though.

She wears very pale powder foundation and lines her upper lids in grey or grey navy. On her lids she uses shades of taupe, nothing dramatic for daytime. She wears black mascara at all times as her eyelashes are a bit indistinct otherwise, and her eyes would get lost. She manages to look like herself only more defined iyswim, and not covered in slap.

She uses a pinkish toned blusher on her cheeks for day and a bronzer in a light colour for evening. For evening eye colours, grey, sparkly and taupe are her choices.

She never wears bright lipstick, always a neutral with the slightest pink or peach tone. Her look is all about the eyes.

oooh, that's my colouring!

Don't let her do what I did and spend her teens in 'brownish' lipsticks 'because that's what redheads wear' - it turns out I look a MILLION times better in pinkish lipsticks ('blue raspberry' by bobbi brown is my 'your lips but better' shade) - they make me come alive whereas the brownish/brick tones I was told I should wear made me look like a vampire!

Also, pink blusher rather than 'coral because that's what redheads wear' again - but it will depend on her skintone... actually, I think a lot of it is about skin tone rather than hair colour tbh (i use bobbi browns 'powder pink' which isn't powder, just natural!)

I also stick to brown mascara because black looks a bit harsh (imo) (I am an old hag though)

knitknack · 16/11/2011 17:56

Actually looking again my makeup is pretty much identical to Kirsten's in that pic - pink lips and cheeks and dark brown eyes... I don't look like her though, sigh

Brilliant thanks - I'll keep an eye out for a set which has those colours. I want to teach her to wear natural makeup - not plastered on with a trowel!

If you want to give her a bit of guidance, I recommend giving her the book "Teenage Beauty" bu Bobbi Brown - maybe as a Christmas gift? DD1 got it as a gift from my sister and I thought it was brilliant, very sensible in its advice about good eating habits, getting enough sleep, very positive about putting your best foot forward and being confident, very much the antidote to all the teen magazines. The DDs have all benefited from it imo.

TheLaineyWayIsEssex · 16/11/2011 19:16

I watched a tutorial with Jodie Kidd (make up artist) the other day and she saidvyou should wear eye make up to suit your eyes not your hair

Methe · 16/11/2011 19:18

I have a couple of wonderfully beautiful ginger friends and they all look amazing in green or with smokey eyes.

droves · 16/11/2011 19:29

Dd3 likes to wear silvery green eyes , loads of black /brown mascara and usually has nude or clear gloss lips. , very very pale skin , that freckles in summer and auburn hair with copper highlights . She's not into blusher yet as has quite pink cheeks naturally .... She's stunningly pretty .

droves · 16/11/2011 19:34

Actually the best thing for a redhead is to get their eyelashes dyed.
Even just that alone enhances their natural beauty , I think if you are lucky enough to have red hair .

brighthair · 16/11/2011 20:47

I am redhead with green eyes, pale skin and freckles
Blusher - I wear benefit Coralista mainly
Eyes - anything!! Bronzes like Mac woodwinked work well on me, greens like Mac humid or steamy, purples or I do a smokey eye

sweetheart · 16/11/2011 22:05

Thanks for th book link math - how old do you think they should be to read it? Dd is 11.5, she is in year 7 at school - do you think she's too young?

OP posts:
mathanxiety · 17/11/2011 16:16

I wouldn't think she was too young. DD1 was 12 when she got it. At the time, some of her classmates had started showing an interest in makeup and the results were often quite comical. DD1 had started taking an interest in the clothes she wore, how her hair looked, etc. I'm not opposed to teenage girls using makeup as long as you don't make a holy show of yourself, and the book was exactly what the doctor ordered.

DD1 needed a bit of advice and of course at 12 your mother is not the person you are most likely to listen to when it comes to questions about how much eyeliner is ok, or even whether to wear at least a jacket going out in the snow, etc. The book said nothing I wouldn't have said, the photos were all very nice, no skimpy clothes or vampy looks -- the emphasis was on health, assessing your features and making the most of them, and being yourself.

As a makeup artist mum, I would suggest choosing the colour more in terms of your eye colour than your hair colour. If your eye colour is green or blue (i.e. a cool shade) then choose an eye colour that is a warm shade (rusty, browny, goldy colours) or anything autumnal. If your eye colour is brown (i.e. warm), then choose a greeny or blue shade (i.e. cool). This contrasts the eye better. Make sure you line your eyes really well and put loads of mascara on. A nice lip; gloss or lipstick, whichever you prefer and away you go!!

Not sure if you need suggestions, but here are some some from a little-known USA brand called Mineralogie.

If your eyes are green or blue try one of the warm shades: www.nuusuite.com/shop-by-brand/mineralogie/eyeshadow-shimmer.html

If your eyes are brown try one of the bluey shades: www.nuusuite.com/shop-by-brand/mineralogie/eyeshadow-matte.html#

Let usknow how you get on!

sweetheart · 17/11/2011 17:01

thanks - I'm going to wait and see if she reaches for my make up again between now and christmas - it might have been a passing phase as she is a right tomboy and this is the first time she's even hinted at wanting to wear make-up but I totally agree that I want her to learn less is more and not going out looking like one of the TOWIE stars!

She's very plain so I think I'll stick to a couple of eyeshadows, a mascara and maybe some nude lip gloss for now.
