I would say no, not for black tie. What's your size/colouring/budget?

Jammygal · 14/11/2011 13:55

Brunette, 12 on a good day ;) £50 -£100 Ty x

Lovely dress but not really black tie. If you want to wear a shorter dress it really needs to be sparkly or lace to get away with for black tie.

am possibly thinking of.........

How about something like this? I've bought several brand new dresses from ebay sellers and have never been disappointed. Last year I got a current season Monsoon dress for less than £60, which was £100 cheaper than the store price. If you search for a designer of your choice and specify brand new, you'll probably find something on there.

agree - nice dress but not black tie. Second one is better.

I like the jersey maxi dress. Gorgeous and looks like you could also dress down with sandals for summer nights somewhere gorgeous.

I think that black tie generally means long evening gown. Having said that I saw this dress a few weeks ago and I really really want it!!! I keep going back to look at it!

overthemill · 14/11/2011 15:02

black tie IS long, cocktail is short. smart/casual can be cocktail but black tie is long but some can get away with incredibly lovely trousers/chiffon type tops.

Yes, I agree with overthemill I have seen a couple of people wear short, fabulous cocktail gowns to black tie things, but personally I would always stick to long to be on the safe side.
