Anyone know about No-Poo hair regime's? I have a couple of questions about clarifying and curly hair leave in products..

I am mixed heritage with naturally very thick and curly hair, though the strands are very soft fine IYSWIM. I want to start a no-poo regime as pregnancy has really dried out my hair and it seems any shampoo is a no go as they seem to be more damaging than ever before.

I want to clarify my hair but I don't know if I should be doing this before the wash itself or at the end of the wash or both Confused

Also, I have 3b hair (thick and curly corkscrew hair with fine strands) so can anyone recommend a good leave in conditioner or other product? I used to use the old Sunsilk curl cream years ago but since they stopped selling it, I have been at a loss to find a new product. I don't like serums, mouse's or gels because they all weigh down my hair so use my normal conditioner daily, but it is obviously not designed to be a leave in product so doesn't work that well.

I do a low poo regime with tresemme naturals.
Styling wise I use naked (from boots) brand curl cream, although I do mix mine with a gel. The curl cream is silicone free
I think a few people were using the aussie shampoo before starting

Seriously? It's called No-Poo?

brighthair · 14/11/2011 14:04

Yep, as in no shampoo Wink

TheRhubarb · 14/11/2011 14:07

Ohhhhhhhhhhhh! Now I geddit! I did wonder how they could launch a brand called No-Poo and what that told you about the ingredients of some shampoo brands Shock

Thanks brighthair!

I am going to Boots today and will try that product to see how it will manage my temperamental hair.

I would have thought that unless you have a very explosive baby, most hair regimes are no-poo.

Aaaaah. I see. No shampoo.

Ha ha @ Mjanatee Grin

I do have a particularly explosive baby actually. There is no way of avoiding the poo entirely sadly.

It's fine to use an ordinary conditioner as a leave-in, but put it on sopping wet hair.
You need to be careful to avoid silicone, which weighs down your curls. Check the ingredients and stay away from anything ending in -cone.
www.naturallycurly.com has lots of useful advice.

I recently tried to do No-Poo but I couldn't handle no 'poo at all so am now doing Lo-Poo Grin

If you do no-poo you basically 'wash' your hair with a conditioner (needs to be free of silicones so that it doesn't weigh your hair down) eg Original Source (cheap as chips) and then 'condition' it with a more moisturising conditioner (again no silicones). I use L'Oreal nutri gloss.

Some people find a No-poo regime doesn't clean their hair well enough so (like me) use a Lo-poo version which means you do use a shampoo but one with NO sulphates - these are the things that do the damage. I use the Naked range from Boots.

If you use conditioners with silicones you will need a sulphate shampoo to get them out, hence not using silicones and therefore not needing a harsh sulphate shampoo.

I'm in the early stages but it's going well now I've found a shampoo.

LDNmummy · 14/11/2011 20:31

Thanks gypsy that is great to know. I am going to start off 'lo-poo' and ease into a routine before going the whole hog. Plus I'm assuming that easing into it with a sulphate free shampoo means I don't have to figure out the clarifying bit yet.

Gypsy can I ask what differences you notice in your hair? And does it really feel as clean and wieghtless as when it is shampooed?

Now I'm using a shampoo again it's fine, but it really didn't feel clean using a conditioner to wash with. Maybe I just scrapped the shampoo too soon - I'd never tried it before and there was probably years of build up to get rid of.

I tried no-poo for a week and then nearly scrapped the regime altogether as my hair looked awful. But I liked the way it had curled on the first day so I bought some Lo-poo shampoo and it's been lovely since then.

I always thought I had straight (albeit frizzy) hair but knew it had the potential to curl. Doing this I've discovered it's actually naturally very curl indeed and I've been asked numerous times in the last few weeks if I've had a perm!

I'm not sure about clarifying - I'm not really sure what that means. I do know that you should do one last sulphate-shampoo wash when you first start to get rid of any silicones that have built up from previous conditioners. Could that be it?

LesserOfTwoWeevils · 14/11/2011 21:25

I'm doing low-poo as well, and my hair is much curlier and less frizzy. Still suspect it's dry, though, and I need to work on getting a shine.

LDNmummy · 15/11/2011 01:29

By 'clarify' I meant the baking soda wash they advise you to do every once in a while. It can also be done with lemon juice I believe.

I'm glad to hear positive things about this because I have been wanting to do it for years but keep putting it off. My hair is so dry now I have to do something so here's hoping..
