Help me with tights to go with a party dress, please?

You're going to have to trust me that the dress is OK (oldish, so I can't find a link) . It's a fairly simple sleeveless tunic/dress in a drapey jersey fabric. Mid thigh on me and I plan to wear it with (very) opaque tights and heels. It's a deep red colour (dark as opposed to bright IYSWIM). The dress is quite plain with the only embellishment around the, quite high, neck. So, I don't think it wants a necklace, but it probably could do with accessorising (which I'm rubbish at)

It needs a narrow belt and I was going to wear the black one I have, but is there a better way? My only other thought is to do "interesting" tights. WWYD?

Sounds like thick lace tights would do the trick (ie lots of coverage). Or I have done thin lace over an opaque pair.

And something in your hair?

Ooh, yes I hadn't thought of lace. I'm mid-forties, is that still OK do you think? I'm 5'7'' , the dress is size 10 and I run 40 miles a week, so my legs are OK (IMVHO!) but even so.....

Nothing useful to add but respect for running 40 miles a week!

letmehelp · 12/11/2011 20:45

Ah thanks Geordie, that's nice. You'd be amazed how may people tell me "it's OK for you, you can eat what you like". Which isn't strictly true, but the running does mean I can pack it away at times Smile

How many times/how far each time?

letmehelp · 12/11/2011 22:20

I generally train 5 times a week. One long slow run, which can be up to 15 miles (building up to 20+ by April Shock ). One "speedwork" session lasting about an hour, of shorter fast efforts, probably 4 miles in total, a fast run of around 7-8 miles and 2 easier runs of 6-8 miles each.

I also do 3 pilates classes and 2 strength workouts a week, so I am a bit obsessed, but I think I earn my cake (and my legs! ) I race about once a month, which keeps me focused.

I only started 4 years ago though and on my first outing could barely do 100 yards. Are you interested because you run, or because you're thinking you might try it?

How did you get into running? I'm one who'd struggle with the 100 yards but would love to do more.

Geordieminx · 13/11/2011 07:42

Letme... I would like to get into it. Am def in the can't run more than 100 yards camp. I battle with my weight, my mum is morbidly obese, and I know if I could get inti running it would give me a bit kore freedom, and I wouldn't have to eat like a church mouse forcing rest of my life. Plus I hate the gym Blush

Will find you some dresses tonight, can't link just now as on iPhone.

Did you specify colour? Would you consider lace?

Geordieminx · 13/11/2011 07:43

Oops wring thread. You already have dressBlush

Def lace tights

Thanks everyone.

For those asking about the running, I can honestly say it's not overdramtic to say it's changed my life. 4 years ago I would never have considered a short skirt and lace tights, although I was never fat! But far more than that it's built my confidence in every area, when you can achieve what I have in running, (first 5k, then 10k, 10 miles, half marathon...) it makes you believe you can achieve anything. (As well as getting fit and feeling better, plus those endorphins)

I started by running those 100 yards, then walking for a bit until I could run another 100, gradually building up until I could run continuously for 30 mins. (Happens surprisingly quickly) Then I did a race for life. After that there was no stopping me. I joined a running club (found via google) which has been great because you have a set time to run each week, which means you go regardless of the weather, It's been great socially as you meet people you just wouldn't bump into otherwise. It's also good to have people to run with on dark evenings. Some running clubs have walking and run walk groups so you can even do the initial build up with them. I hope you go for it Smile
