What kind of shoes am I actually looking for?

I want something that is not a boot, that has a bit of height (5ft nothing) that is a shoe. I am only in my 30's but anything that seems to fit that description is hideous or elderly. What am I actually looking for? I have a wide foot which doesn't help.

Sorry, just to make it even more difficult, I've a 1 year old to run around after and I want to wear socks with them so no foot on show..... there's no such shoe....

Mmmm, I do like the wedges.....are wedges generally a bit naff though?
