Sizing a silver ring

JosieRosie · 11/11/2011 09:57

My new silver ring (bought on t'interweb) has arrived and it's too small Sad I can get it on my finger but it's definitely too tight for comfort, so I reckon it needs to go up by a size. The problem is, it's a silver band in two parts which fit together - the side where the two parts join in a jagged line. So two questions: i) can you expand a silver ring (stupid question probably Blush) and ii) will it be possible to do this with a ring in two parts, and still have it fit together neatly?
Any advice gratefully received. I will take it to a jewellers but thought I would pick all your lovely brains first - thanks!

Can you put a pick on your profile? Friend is a jeweller...could show him pic to save you a trip if a no go...

ParsleyTheLioness · 11/11/2011 10:05

Just seen no profile...failing that you could email me one...depends on whether this is easier than visiting a jeweller when you are up town. Would they let you post back, and send you the next size?

RockChick1984 · 11/11/2011 10:06

i) yes silver can be resized, most jewellers will add extra metal into it rather than stretching if at all possible.
ii) can't picture what you mean, sorry. Do you have a pic of the ring, I can have a look and try and tell you (I used to be a jeweller).

RockChick1984 · 11/11/2011 10:09

X-post, sorry

JosieRosie · 11/11/2011 10:12

silver ring

Sorry peeps, that would have been useful in the first place eh? Wink It's the thinner size

Silver can be resized as long as the design allows...eg, Ihave a set of Russian Rings that cannot be resized becuase of the inter-joining.

ParsleyTheLioness · 11/11/2011 10:16

I think if they can treat is as one ring you might be ok....can you wait til later in the day when I can show or send link to my friend?

JosieRosie · 11/11/2011 10:21

Thanks v much Parsley. Won't be going to jewellers until tomorrow at the earliest so yes please do ask your friend Smile

If it's only a tiny bit (which it sounds like if it goes on your finger but is a bit tight) they may be able to stretch it, however not possible to size a ring like that up by adding extra silver to it.

ParsleyTheLioness · 11/11/2011 10:29

My friend has a stretcher, so assume they're common equiipment to jewellers. he said that you could go up about half a size, a size, when i got a ring from him. Was kind of between sizes, and in the end he didn't need to do it.

ParsleyTheLioness · 11/11/2011 10:38

Ok, am going to pm you...

ParsleyTheLioness · 13/11/2011 08:54

Josie, what did you decide to you in the end?

saoirse86 · 13/11/2011 10:43

My DP is a jeweller and I work for him so know a bit about it. I very much doubt anyone will want to size it by adding a piece as it will be so difficult to match the design and you probably will be unhappy with the result.

In terms of stretching there are two ways you can do it. You can either use a kind of machine where you put the ring in and pull down a lever which stretches it. But that way you always get marks on the inside and out so you wouldn't usually do it to something with a pattern on, unless you're able to redo the pattern. I'm also not sure the jagged line would fit back together properly.

The other way we do it, which is probably your best option, is by putting in on a sizing stick (like this) and you basically push it along the stick to stretch it. Doing that with silver is usually easy as it's so soft, so if it's only half a size that should be ok. But any jeweller who does it will still warn you that they can't guarantee that it will still be perfect afterwards and you just have to decide whether you want to take the risk.

Good luck Smile

omerta · 13/11/2011 10:49

Could I ask if the same would be true of a gold ring? Smile

saoirse86 · 13/11/2011 11:07

Would what be true of a gold ring? One with a pattern that needs sizing? And what carat gold is it?

JosieRosie · 13/11/2011 21:34

Parsley, I'm going to take it to a jeweller who re-sized my friend's wedding ring. I need to get them to tell me whether it needs to go up by a size or a half-size. The sizing stick option sounds good but will see what they say
Thanks all Smile

We really want you to wear it....what bit of coastline is on it btw? (nosey emoticon)

bethelbeth · 14/11/2011 00:00

Hello was going to put my tuppence in but Saoirse got there first ;)

She's quite right obviously. But you'll be lucky to get a half size bigger without changing the coastline and having it not fit together.

The rule is generally the same with gold although the higher the karat of gold the more malleable it will be.

JosieRosie · 14/11/2011 12:25

Parsley, it's the North Cornwall coastline between Bude and Padstow. DP is from there and we have had lovely holidays there Smile

Will be gutted if it doesn't work out - could wear it on a chain around my neck I suppose but not very keen on necklaces really and I wanted a ring. Will keep you all posted - may not be able to anything for a couple of weeks though!
Thanks again

Thanks everyone for your advice. I got it sorted, only needed to go up half a size. It fits perfectly and looks great - I love it! Smile
