I'm not particularly big - size 12, 5 ft 5 and 10 1/2 St ( ok so I am a little overweight) . I can handle the fact that I'm in my 40s and parts of my body are wobbly beyond jelly, infect I'm willing to embrace everything that middleage throws at me - if only I could have a waist that goes in and not out! I want to look curvy but with a nipped in waist for a posh black tie do I've got coming up soon. I'm thinking 50's siren a - la - Marilyn -Monroe- esque . Who's tried a corset ? I'm willing to go throw extreme pain to actually feel sexy again for one evening . Advice greatly received

I frickin love them - although some extreme shape wear may do the same thing for you as waists need 'training' in corsets to get the really extreme pinch. at a first go they should take about 4" off.. I would recommend http://www.fairygothmother.com/ website, if you have a look in shapewear they have girdle corsets that might be perfect for you! happy corset shopping!

I love corsetry but never buy a cheap one as it'll be uncomfortable, not change your shape much & the plastic stays will dig in. I have three from Vollars of Portsmouth. Comfy, dramatic & improves your posture no end too.

bethelbeth · 11/11/2011 01:16

I wear a lot of corsets for fun. I'd recommend Snobs corsets. Well made, steel boned and well cut so that you have no lumps or bumps.

worldgonecrazy · 11/11/2011 08:11

I bought a couple of a lady who makes them and sells them on ebay. You don't need to pull them in too tight to give yourself a fab figure, one or two inches will do it. I usually overtighten at the start of the night and then release an inch or so after an hour or two. It seems to be less breathtaking than starting off gently and tightening up throughout the evening.

MidnightHag · 11/11/2011 08:35

This works well for me, if you want something a little less fancy.

phyllisdiller · 11/11/2011 10:04

I have a Vollers too, it is amazing, definitely worth it, especially for a special occasion.

I went and had mine fitted where they make them, if you live anywhere near Portsmouth it's worth the drive over.

ParsleyTheLioness · 11/11/2011 10:07

Ok, so how much are we talking for a Vollers, now I've been convinced....

TracyK · 11/11/2011 11:08

Eek parsley - have a look - I can't see anything under £150 - going right up to £750!
The Vollers website is lovely - but they seem to be promoting to wear the corset as an outerwear top. Although pulling you in at the waist - are they not bulky to wear under sheer fabrics?
Can you remember who it was on ebay worldgonecrazy?

ParsleyTheLioness · 11/11/2011 13:49

Good grief....not for a while then...will have to slim!

bethelbeth · 11/11/2011 14:17

Have a google at waist trainers. These are corsets meant for wearing under clothes and you can wear them every day. It is not for the faint hearted though!

shineybright · 11/11/2011 23:40

Well I've been looking at all your suggestions and have seen some really beautiful corsets - some quite pricey though. Thing is there are so many to choose from! I want something that I can wear under a dress without anyone knowing. Would I be best to go for an under or over bust one? Wouldn't an overbust one give less of an overspilling muffin effect IYNWIM?!

Bella di Notte is comfortable and avoids muffin effect.

shineybright · 12/11/2011 08:33

That looks quite comfy midnight but I'm wonder if it will pull my waist in enough?

It is boned, so it pulls you in, but the effect is not as extreme as the figleaves cincher I posted earlier. I decide which one to wear depending on whether I'm going to be mostly sitting or standing. Blush

TracyK · 12/11/2011 09:53

I'm also having a look at the tupler splint - which is like a wrap woth velcro - so you can pull it as tight as required. Not sure if I can get it in the UK though.
