50's Style Dress?

Midori1999 · 10/11/2011 22:07

I have a Christmas party to go to at the beginning of December and would really like a nice 50's style dress to wear, one that flares out from the waist and comes just below the knee. I've seen the Dollydagger ones, but think I'd prefer something a bit more smart looking, if that makes sense? Maybe a straight neckline too, but don't mind something else. Also, a solid colour.

Any idea where I might find one please?

Unique Vintage in the US have a stupendous range and they take about 2 weeks to arrive. www.unique-vintage.com

I sell 50s style evening dresses but my lead time would be too long for you Sad.

Also check out Dolly Couture www.dollycouture.com/special-occasion.html I am coveting the 'Avila Bay' in navy... they have the petticoats sewn in which is a good saving but still quite £££. They are lovely quality though (I sell Dolly Couture wedding dresses and they're fab).

Whirling Turban have beautifully made 50s dresses, but the choice from their 'ready made' selection is quite limited I think - they mostly do made to order www.whirlingturban.com

Vivienne of Holloway do solid colour 50s style dresses and chiffon petticoats too, but probably too similar to what you've seen on Dolly Dagger.

here There are loads of 50's style dresses and they are in the uk.

Tethersend, was just about to post about the Hobbs Doe dress, but you beat me to it! I bought this last week to wear at a Christmas wedding. Wasn't convinced when I saw it on line but it is gorgeous on feels very glamorous and is very flattering! - definitely worth checking out.

ElderberrySyrup · 11/11/2011 10:36

ConfusedGirlSuz · 11/11/2011 10:42

I'd recommend going to ebay and in type in '50's dress'. LOADS of different options come up. Evening dresses, day dresses - all so nice. Here is the link.

That pink modcloth one is gorgeous...oooh and the DollyCoture tulips.
Some of the Audrey type dresses on eBay are lovely too.

Keep an eye on Vivien Of Holloway. She currently has a pencil dress with a wrap style top (www.vivienofholloway.com/en/category/wrap-dress/) and she's about to do a run of this with the circle skirt which I think will be really lovely.

Redrubyblue · 11/11/2011 13:13

Redrubyblue · 11/11/2011 13:14

Thanks
Pete

tethersend · 11/11/2011 14:19

ForwardOcho · 11/11/2011 23:10

I could have sworn I posted this last night, I must have been pissed tired.
Anyway, what I wanted to say was - pleeeeze someone buy this! I already have the cream/gold version which I was married in this year, and I cannot really justify another, but this is gorgeous........

ElderberrySyrup · 11/11/2011 23:17

That is very pretty. But it is £250, not including the underskirt or the belt which would set you back a further £40 each Shock

tethersend · 11/11/2011 23:31

This is very similar but a 10th of the price.

If link doesn't work, it's called "Rise Floral Printed Lace Dress".

inhibernation · 12/11/2011 09:03

Pete - look at Etsy for beautiful handmade baby hats. The crochet ones are gorgeous

Midori1999 · 12/11/2011 21:38

Thankyou for the replies.

I love the Hobbs one, but tried it on today and it looks too 'matronly' as I am large of nork. Pity.

I think I am going to go for one of the Vivien Of Holloway dresses after all. I'd like the solid one in red cotton, but it's out of stock, so thinking black. I have black peep toe shoes, so should I go for a red belt? Black petitcoat? I thought it'd be fun to do the whole 50's style hair/make-up, but don't want to look too dress up.

Any tips appreciated, I am much better with wellies, mud and dogs... Smile

It's worth trying the VOH shop for the red one. Sometimes they have stock in the shop that's not in the online inventory.

I wear my black one with a black petticoat (from eBay) either with black peeptoes and black belt with detail buckle, red peeptoes, red belt and red corsage or slivery pewter peeptoes, black or pewter belt then lots of simple diamanté jewellery. If you go with a black petticoat then you can go nuts with accessories.

As for hair and makeup, YouTube is useful for both. Also worth investing in, if you've got long enough hair, is a set of bumpits. You can get them from poundland and they make the volume beehive styles much easier.

Havingkittens · 13/11/2011 16:16

sheep a beehive is a 60s hairdo, not 50s Wink

I did an article on how to do a 50s make up but can't post it here without outing myself! I will try to remember to pm you with a link when I'm no posting from my phone.

krisskross · 13/11/2011 16:20

surprisingly, john lewis do nice ones every year in their own range- based my lovely wedding dress on one! i guess look under party wear on website

Midori1999 · 13/11/2011 20:28

I'm nowhere near the shop, is it worth ringing?

Havingkittens, a link would be fab thanks, although I had considered a make up lesson in MAC.

Thankyou!

Ah...I know Kittens but I'm soooo rubbish at anything else.

Yes, call the shop, they're very helpful.

inhibernation · 14/11/2011 00:20

kittens - could you pm me as well pretty please Smile I have a 50s nite in two weeks and I can't afford to get my make up done so am going to do it myself.

Havingkittens · 14/11/2011 21:57
