Curly girls alternative to Boots pink curl creme

bigfatgypsy · 10/11/2011 19:30

I'm just getting into this and bought some pink curl cream from boots as previously recommended but I don't like it at all. It's very sticky and my hair is very dry today, and it just doesn't seem to do anything for me.

Is there a good alternative? I'm using the Umberto Gianni flirty curls gel which is brilliant but could do with something conditioning to leave in between the normal conditioning and the gel.

Any suggestions? I have (I think) botticelli curls with highlights.

If it's sticky you might be using too much.

cluelessnchaos · 10/11/2011 19:40

Tigi s factor in a tear shaped bottle, can't remember what it's called but is the best I've ever used, I didn't really like curl Creme either but liked the price

Get your wallet out and buy Kerastase leave-in conditioner. It's amazing.

BikeRunSki · 10/11/2011 19:51

Mix it with some conditioner (leave in or otherwise) and use a tiny amount. My curly hair is really thick and come to about 2" below my shoulders. I use about a 2p size of curl creme and a 2p size of whatever conditoner is about.

bigfatgypsy · 10/11/2011 20:11

I did think I only used a bit, and I made sure I rubbed it in my hands first to make it go white but it just didn't seem to do much for my hair. What should it do?

The gel is good for getting rid of any frizzy bits but I'm just not sure what the curl creme is meant to do. Ideally I want softness without having to use too much gel - it's a bit too crunchy if I use too much.

Oh, very important, put it in wet hair, then curl creme will give you soft un-crunchy curls.

tethersend · 10/11/2011 21:39

Get the Kerastase- I promise you you won't be disappointed.

Trills · 10/11/2011 21:48

I spent £25 on moroccanoil and it is less good for my hair than the £2 pink curl creme.

How sure are you that I should spend £15 (+p&p most likely) on this stuff?

tethersend · 10/11/2011 21:55

The Kerastase? Very sure. Will buy it off you if you don't like it Wink

sidsmissis · 11/11/2011 08:35

I have had great results with the Aveda curl enhancing cream. I use it after a leave in conditioner and under the Umberto Gianni gel.

It's pricier than the boots pink, £17 iirc but it lasts for ages as I only need to use a small amount.

brighthair · 11/11/2011 09:52

I'm mixing the flirty girls gel with naked range curl cream, was about £5 in boots

JosieRosie · 11/11/2011 09:53

OP, I've been using Tresemme Naturals conditioner (the rinse-out stuff) as a leave-in conditioner and my hair loves it! I put it onto soaking wet hair, plenty of it, then wrap hair in towel/old t-shirt and leave for 10-15 minutes and then air dry. Cheap as chips too!

bigfatgypsy · 12/11/2011 08:46

Thanks for all the suggestions, I'm just still a bit unsure of what a curl creme actually does for your hair? Is it meant to actually condition it or does it just define your curls?

What's the difference between that and a leave in conditioner?

Yesterday I used L'Oreal's nutri gloss (the one in the pink tub) and only rinsed a tiny bit and my hair was lovely. Very soft with nicely defined curls. I feel like I'm missing a stage out though and just want to get my head round whether I need a curl creme or not.

Try Tigi curls rock amplifier . I have similar hair and find it really keeps the frizz at bay if used on wet hair.

ParsleyTheLioness · 13/11/2011 08:14

I have the Morrocan Oil curl creme...not sure whether Trills is using that or the Morrocan Oil serum itself, but this is pretty good.

Himalaya · 13/11/2011 08:32

Yes it defines - sticks the curls together together so they don't frizz.

Put it on very wet hair and then do the 'plop' technique with a long sleeve t-shirt.

If you put too much on it can get a bit crispy - but you can scrunch that out when it is 100% dry.

Defined curls are a bit harder than the ideal of soft, bouncy curls. But I have never found a product (including much more eventing ones) that really delivers on this ideal. On my hair soft curls in the morning = big ball of frizz by lunchtime. Grin

Are you doing the conditioner wash thing too?

saoirse86 · 13/11/2011 10:54

Well i'm glad it's not just me who hates that boots curl cream. I'm glad it was cheap because it was a complete waste of money! I used to use this one and have gone back to it as it's loads better than that boots stuff (and often 2 for £6, like it is now). I might try some of these suggestions, but it's just so expensive trying things and then hating them!

About 15 years ago I was using a l'oreal leave in conditioner which was really good, left my curls defined, soft, not sticky, no stiffness, perfect! But they went and discontinued it. Sad

ParsleyTheLioness · 13/11/2011 11:07

Yes, I'm kinda glad too, cos I didn't know about the Boots creme when I was forced encouraged to buy the Morrocan stuff by the hairdresser!

Himalaya · 13/11/2011 11:30

Eventing, wtf.... was trying to say expensive

Trills · 13/11/2011 11:59

I was using the actual moroccanoil itself Just didn't get on with it. Doesn't mean you won't of course.

Trills · 13/11/2011 12:01

I have friends who like the Trevor Sorbie stuff - but is it curly girl friendly? I mean is it siliconey? (I know moroccanoil is very siliconey).

Pinot · 13/11/2011 13:14

Himalaya Whats the 'plop' technique with a Tshirt?

I've grown my hair long for the first time in years and it's kinky/curly...what are the new do's and don'ts?

I love the Boots curl creme but didn't know I had to rub it until it was white Blush

I used to use Trevor Sorbie when last had long hair but...? Maybe outdated info, soz OP.

Himalaya · 13/11/2011 15:18

Pinot - I think that is what it's called - there is a whole curlygirl subculture on the Internet - which is really useful as most hairdressers don't know what to do with curls other than blow them out.

Basically you condition and rinse your hair, then put product on when it is really wet.

You spread an old long sleve top (cotton with a bit of Lycra in) on a chair or on the bed tip your head upside and plop your curls onto it. Then you wrap it all up using the sleeves to tie round the outside, squashing it flat -so that your curls are sort of concertinaed onto your head and you look like you've joined a new religion. Then you go eat breakfast etc.. for half an hour. Then take it down, give it a shake and air dry the rest on your way to work etc...

Ta da ... Defined curls that last a couple of days.

Also only use shampoo once a week - the rest if the time use washbwith conditioner.

krisskross · 13/11/2011 16:32

aveda curl enhancing cream its bettter than frizz ease and the boots stuff

Pinot · 13/11/2011 19:18

Thanks Himalaya, I'll give it a go. I did a proper LOL at looking "like you've joined a new religion" :o :o
