Bare Minerals and cystic acne...?

following the 5679 mile long thread on here, I purchased the bare minerals starter kit...inspired by the lovely Jodie and her crew :)
I have been using it for about 6 weeks and I really like the product - the way it goes on and blends, the coverage, the look, how it feels. Unfortunately, pretty much since I started using it, I have been getting outbreaks of cystic acne. The only other time I had similar outbreaks was in early pregnancy - I am definitely not pregnant now.
So, is it BM? is it the bismuth in it? Should I try lily lolo? and If so, does anyone know what is their equivalent of medium beige..?

No advice, but have the same problem. All over my forehead and am really upset because I was loving it. Have rested my skin but still look pretty bad. But maybe is the primer I thought??

MadamTwoSwords · 09/11/2011 22:18

I had the same thing. Really bad horrible painful spots. I've changed to lily Lolo and it's much better.

Think it is the bismuth as I had the same thing with the ELF mineral powder a while ago and looking at the ingredients for that it has bismuth in too.

bringmesunshine, I only used the primer a couple of times, so it's not it, in my case.

madamtwoswords, which foundation shade did you use in BM and what is the equivalent in LL? how did you know which colour to go for? [stupid emoticon]

I thought mine was the primer (was using Avon magix) but think it was def the bismuth.

I used fairly light in BE and porcelain or china doll (can't remember at moment) in LL. they do tester pots for £1.29 which last a good few days if not a week so are great for testing out which one is best. I def recommend getting a couple of testers and giving it a go.

I'm ok with BE but I've definitely heard other people say that it gives them outbreaks of spots and Lilylolo doesn't. I use both (not at the same time!).

They do handy little tester pots so you could try it for a few days and see if you have the same problem.

IMO Lilylolo do a better range of shades. I reckon you should try Barely Buff or something like that if you're a BE medium beige. If you look at their foundations online, it organises them by shade (pale, medium etc) and it tells you a bit about whether it's pink toned or warm toned etc.

I LOVE Lilylolo, spots or not it's just better. On their own site they do samples £1.29 and when you know your colours, use feelunique.com as they do free p&p.

I am FairlyLight in BE and am Blondie/China Doll in LL.

Does anyone know what it is with Bismouth that is so spot-inducing?

FYI, BE Matte doesn't contain bismouth AFAIK.

Really good article - hope it helps.

You could have saved me from an expensive mistake as I was planning to order the Bare Minerals Get Started pack. I can't find how to order testers on the Lily Lolo site though - can anyone point me in the right direction please?

duende · 10/11/2011 14:13

Thank you lovely people! I have just ordered a couple of sample pots of lily Loki foundation. I asked them a question through their facebook page about the shades and they replied v. Quickly.

To order samples from their website go to foundation, then select colour, then select size from their drop down list.

Another vote here for lily Lolo foundation. The bismuth in BE will be what's causing your spots, although the matte version is bismuth free so might be worth trying.

Make sure you wash your brushes before trying the lily Lolo to ensure all traces of bismuth have gone.

To order lily Lolo samples, click on the shade you want and it will give you the option of full size or sample size.

I was allergic to it, I have a nickel allergy and the therapist said the minerals sparked nickel allergy but I get the same with some high factor sunscreens
