Best skin products for someone late 40s

OK so my skin's been OK so far and I've never spent a fortune on products or been brand loyal. Just bought No7, Boots, Body Shop or even supermarket stuff in the past. Wondered whether I should ask for some treats for Christmas - am thinking eye cream, day cream and night cream. Any recommendations for someone my age? (quite like the look of Origins stuff) Or should I just carry on as I am? Oh, and what is serum - what do you do with it and should I be using it?!!

I recently changed to Liz Earle - polish range - very impressed - my skin (mid 40's and sun damaged) has been a lot smoother and shinier.

Really recommend this site www.beautypedia.com

Dispels lots of the myths especially over Clarins and other £££ brands.

If you want things that work, then I think E Laudee is good although I am a Clinique fan myself- Youth Surge, Super Defence, and their serums get good reviews.

I don't waste £££ on cleansers- or toners. Use a keep cleansing lotion.

serum goes on under moisturiser or night cream- evidently it is finer and is absorbed more easily.

Thanks amelia will take a look at that site. I use supermarket cleanser and never use a toner! Thanks for enlightening me about serum. I guess I can probably live without that?!

Oooo no! You cant live without serum. It's lovely! Really smoothing! And if it has reflector bits in it really makes your skin glow. I have used Dior, which is fab. But currently using the illuminating Boots protect and perfect serum. Also use the Boots exfoliating stuff in the protect and perfect range. My skin looks better than it did 10 yrs ago. I'm 42. Those 2 products are my essentials!

I am also in my 40s and really rate both Liz Earle and Mama Mio skincare. The Mama Mio range is great because it combines facial exercise with natural products which are very effective. I have just switched to Liz Earle as I got the Cleanse & Polish free with my Vogue subscription. It is a lovely product - very gentle but deep cleansing. I have also been using L'Oreal's Youth Code as my daily moisturiser and found it to be very good. I have quite dry skin but it is keeping it beautifully supple (even use it as hand cream).

I guess I should look at getting some serum then?!
