Help with curly hair please!

I've not got curly hair but DD (nearly 3) has curly ringlety hair at the moment. I know she might grow out of it but at the moment I find brushing it really difficult. I realise that brushing a 3 year old's hair isn't easy at the best of times but I was wondering if there were any products that would make it easier - it seems to get tangled within 30 seconds of brushing it, brushing it takes forever and there are always huge knots in it.
I use a tangle teezer but tbh I don't find it that brilliant.
I'd be very grateful if anyone had any suggestions for looking after it so it's easier to control!

I use the Curly Girl method - you can search on here for more info, but not sure if it is suitable for children, although I can't think why not.

Firstly, are you trying to brush it when it's dry? Myself and my DDs have thick ringlety hair and only brush when wet and with conditioner in. I use a tangle teezer on DDs and wash twice a week (so it only actually gets brushed twice a week)

I use a leave in conditioner on their hair and sometimes a bit of Boots curl creme to tame any fizziness.

I don't brush DD2 (21 months but lots of hair). Wash or wet everyday in the shower. And let the curls be. (very cute!)
DD1 has straight hairs and the few time they have play and swapped brushes it end up badly. You can't brush curly hair with a comb or a normal brush, you need something like a very wide teeth comb or a special brush (very few widely spaced thistles).
But honestly wash and don't brush.

Just like LeMousq said. I have curly hair and don't brush it - it looks rubbish and frizzy if it's brushed. I wash it every day in the shower (only use shampoo once or twice a week, otherwise plain water) and slather on Aveda conditioner. I don't wash all the conditioner out, so there's a bit to stop the frizz. Then I just let it dry.

I haven't been brushing it for most of her life tbh but she seems to rub her head back and forth on her pillow so it makes a sort of rat's nest on the back of her head iyswim. She's always done this but you really can tell, she gets a big tangled bulge right at the back of her head.
I might try the Curly Girl method, don't see why it shouldn't work with children, apart from the old 'dropping' it into the towel bit Grin

I have 2 dds with curly hair ages 2 and 3.5. I have started using leave in conditioner and it works a treat. I also spray it with water on the days I don't wash it

ruddynorah · 08/11/2011 16:24

You mustn't brush it. Spray it with a mix of water and leave in conditioner between washes and just run fingers through. I get dd to shake her head upside down then flip it forward and back while I spray. Then I just rustle my fingers through.

I tie my DD's hair up in bunches overnight to prevent big tangles.

I use the Naked shampoo and conditioner range from boots or Tresemme Naturals, only shampoo once a weel and spray her hair daily with a water/conditioner mix. The Tangle Teaser brush is okay but I find I have to section her hair off or it doesn't get to the knots underneath.

I also use Matrix Biolage Oil on her hair to stop it drying out, Naked Curl Cream is also good for defining the curls.

I have 2 DD's with curly, but not ringlety, hair and they get the birds nest at the back of their heads. It is nearly impossible to brush out.

It has to be brushed though as it looks like a cross between a birds nest, dreds and a sheeps bum after a few days.

I brush with a denman tangle tamer (not a tangle teaser) and a spray on/leave in conditioner every night and put their hair in plaits. It's a bit of a pain every evening but it's much better than the birds nest, which takes hours to sort out.

Thanks for all the replies, I might try spraying it with conditioner/water mix every day, it only gets washed once a week anyway. Honestly, brushing it makes it look lovely (but a bit frizzy) for about an hour and then it's a mess again. I think conditioner and fingers might be a good plan. I've tried tying her hair up at night but she won't keep it in.
Thanks again!
