London suburban sartorialists and Tethersend - HELP!!

worldgonecrazy · 08/11/2011 08:38

I am going here for dinner Colettes and have not got a clue what to wear. The restaurant website is not very helpful because all it says is 'not a tiara in sight'.

So smart trousers and glitzy top? LBD and if LBD which LBD, simple black shift dress or gorgeous DVF lace sheath LBD?? Or something else.

Budget not a problem because if you link to something too expensive at least I'll have an idea. I'm a normal size 10-12, and 5' 4" if you need any of that boring size stuff.

world - am v jealous. The Grove is one of my favourite places :)

I would say any of your suggestions would work. Personally, I favour a dress for dinner rather than trousers. Do you have anything already in your wardrobe that would work?

worldgonecrazy · 08/11/2011 10:09

Lots of choice in my wardrobe - I'm very lucky, though I may have to do the shred three times a day between now and then to get into some of the dresses.

I just wanted to know what other people would wear, or have worn if they know the restaurant. If it's one of your favourite places I guess you've been there, so can you tell me what every single lady was wearing please!

The Grove is very nice, tends to be quite glam. Have seen quite a bit of the 'footballers wife' look!

Think glitzy top or LBD would be good.

Ifancyashandy · 08/11/2011 10:23

There will be a mutitude of women channelling Lauren off TOWIE / Coleen Rooney! Stand out!

DVF dress lace dress sounds good. BUT....! No diamante. No nude patent platforms. No false eyelashes. No fake tan!

Have fun - it's lovely.

worldgonecrazy · 08/11/2011 10:46

I have an LBD in mind. Not even diamante earrings and natural looking falsies?

OP posts:
worldgonecrazy · 08/11/2011 10:46

Will have to google who Lauren is!

I would definitely go grown up glam. Agree that there is a lot of WAG-ish wear going on!

If you are going LBD, then either discreet diamante earrings would be fine. Vintage would be better Wink and you could get away with bigger.

Natural looking false eyelashes are perfect - but emphasis on natural. You don't want to look like you are capable of giving the walls a quick once over between courses :o

ujjayi · 08/11/2011 11:00

BTW, by discreet I mean that they could be realistically mistaken for real diamonds - so studs or very fine, small drop.

QuimFabray · 08/11/2011 11:20

Ifancyashandy are nude patent platforms really TOWIE/WAG? Kate Middleton wears them, doesn't she?

Asking as I'm thinking of getting a pair for Christmas do coming up Smile

tethersend · 08/11/2011 13:55

London suburban sartorialists and Tethersend??

(DVF sounds good- I would do false lashes and heavy eyes 60s style. No diamante earrings)

worldgonecrazy · 08/11/2011 14:14

Sorry, didn't mean it to sound like that!! You're good enough at the sartorial stuff to have your own listing is what it was meant to read as.

.... and my last post contained terrible grammar!

oooh......Tethersend's recommendation got me thinking..........you should channel Julianne Moore in A Single Man . Surely the most chic 60s reference ever, courtesy of Tom Ford naturally.

tethersend · 08/11/2011 15:18

ujjayi, you read my mind. I LOVE JM in that film.

worldgonecrazy, my massive ego has now inflated even more Grin

worldgonecrazy · 08/11/2011 15:47

Very lovely, though I could never get my hair to do that :( At least I know roughly what level of elegance/dress I am aiming for now.

I'm not sure why London and its suburbs are such a difficult fashion call. I'm perfectly at ease in Paris or Rome, but London seems to have different rules to everywhere else.

Quim, you see, for me - if Kate wears something similar to an item I own, then said item is binned relegated to the back of the wardrobe! Her clothes are boooooooooring! And the fact that the entire female congregation wore nude platforms at Zara Phillips wedding made them an even bigger massive faux pas for me!

I'm more a graduate of the Mary Portas / Cate Blanchet School of Style myself in my dreams

IWouldNotCouldNotWithAGoat · 08/11/2011 19:03

I agree ifancyashandy - if something is a bit Kate Middleton I reject it. I find all her things safe to the point of being boring.

Ifancyashandy · 09/11/2011 11:41

Absolutely - it's my benchmark.... 'Would Queen Kate wear it?'. If so - move along!

worldgonecrazy · 09/11/2011 11:50

Nude platforms are a bit last year, and Princess Anne, much as I love her, also wears them. Nuff said.

OP posts:
IWouldNotCouldNotWithAGoat · 09/11/2011 17:28

Carole Middleton wears them too. Their moment has passed.

tethersend · 09/11/2011 17:50

Princess Anne is a style icon. Sort of.

This is the best wedding dress.

noddyholder · 09/11/2011 17:51

Agree tether I think she looked fab years ago

worldgonecrazy · 15/11/2011 11:01

Thank you everyone - I just treated myself to this:

LK Bennet Teal Velvet

It's a bit safe, looks far better in RL than in the pictures (my norks and arse look amazing!), and I'll get a lot of wear out of it.

That dress is absolutely gorgeous.

Btw, know what you mean about dressing for dinner out in London - or in fact, not London, but posh outer suburbs, like the one you're talking about, and those in commuter belt Surrey - or indeed in the North, as in Cheshire.

Like you, very happy in Paris and Rome and spend most of my time in central London where go to nice restaurants quite often. But struggle with this whole idea of dressing up in super-glam - and, in some cases, flash - stuff, for what should be a relaxed occasion. Much prefer groomed but under-stated, effortless-looking, stylishness (Paris), or touch of funkiness (London).

Quite happy to do the glam thing but prefer it kept for weddings, balls, etc, not a night out with friends. Perhaps I'm just so greedy the food and drink are my top priorities!

Anyway, you're obviously going to look lovely.
