Sali Hughes tutorials on the guardian website are also good, she did a smoky eye viseo a few months back and it was a revelation. She says the secret is to use two different textures of eyeshadow (one powder and one creamy) and bloody 'ell it works!

Pixiwoo on youtube.

I second the Sali Hughes one - just tried it for the first time and it's brilliant.

I used a pale Rimmell shadow for the base, with Max Factor smoky eye effect cream shadow in Silver Storm.

go on You tube and type in Kandee johnson. Shes a make up artist and does great tutorials. She a cheerful american who uses "super" A LOT but she's fantastic! Be prepared to lose evenings to watching tutorials.

Have only a few evenings to loose as the night out is soon

Need to get me some proper shadows - have lots of browns and olives but no proper blacks n greys - scary using such strong colours Grin

My top tip for using dark eyeshadows is to put your base/powder/primer on only the eye area first. That way you can clean up any dropage of shadow down your face with cleanser and then put the rest of your make up on afterwards. That way you won't end up with big dark shadows under your eyes and sooty smudges on your cheekbones.

have you tried urban decay Naked Palette. Its £30 but its has lots of complimentary colours. Golds, nudes a lovely grey and a black- think theres about 8 colours. They're great as an all round package as you can use the light ones for daytime and then the all of them for night time. I also find Bare minerals eyeshadows really easy to blend together and the people at the counter are really helpful. I don't really rate their foundation but their eyeshadows are fab!You cant really go wrong with them so they're great if you are scared of dark colours.
