If you had £1,000 to spend on just one dress....

and one dress alone, what would you buy?

I've been browsing cocktail dresses on net-a-porter and it got me thinking. Some of the dresses on there are 3k and more.

If you were to buy a dress worth 1k what would you get that was 'classical' and would last for years (talking about 20 years)?

And imagine forking out 1k for a dress and realising a year down the line that it looked dated and was an awful mistake!

I wouldn't, I just couldn't. I tried on some 1k dresses for my wedding which I could easily afford, but realised that I wouldn't be physically capable of signing the cheque.

But for 500 quid I'd get a really flattering wool suit that I could wear once a week to work for years and years and years. (Jigsaw's most expensive suits are almost 400 quid now, and I'm dithering over a couple).

Oops, sorry for double post.

thenightsky · 04/11/2011 20:51

I know Dilys. But a wool suit... meh.

I want to find the ultimate cocktail dress. One that people would oooh and ahh over 20 years hence.

I don't think such a dress exists tbh.

catinboots · 04/11/2011 20:55

OOh I love a fantasy challenge.

I'll be right back Grin

catinboots · 04/11/2011 21:02

Possibly would have to be something like a classic Herve Leger bandage dress

Bonsoir · 04/11/2011 21:04

I've spent that much on a dress before - Marni and Etro are my first port of call...

thenightsky · 04/11/2011 21:07

That is nice Cat but what would it be like in 2032? Would people ooo and ahhhh?

Would the structure of it have collapsed by then due to lack of longevity in lycra?

This is turning out to be more challenging than I thought.

catinboots · 04/11/2011 21:08

I was hoping it still might keep my ageing body vaguely in place in 2032 Wink

thenightsky · 04/11/2011 21:10

Bonsoir... we need links lovey.

IslaValargeone · 04/11/2011 21:11

I don't know if Victoria Beckham's dresses come in that bracket, but I do think some of hers are lovely.
The bandage dresses are really over done imo.

thenightsky · 04/11/2011 21:18

i think what I am asking is 'what counts as classic?'

Loads of lovely yummy dresses around, yes, but would they be lovely in 20 years?

Perhaps I should look back to 1991 fashion and see what could be carried through to today.

Westwood for work

Or this

tethersend · 04/11/2011 21:23

I would have to get something vintage I think.

thenightsky · 04/11/2011 21:27

tether... love your 2 links.

So, you think something already 'vintage' would carry through another 20 years? Interesting and worth thinking about.

Funny how nobody would blink an eye at spending 1k on an antique vase or something, but a dress is seen as a bit fluffy.

OP posts:
dexter73 · 04/11/2011 21:29

I suppose the trouble is whether it would still fit you in 20 years. A vase is still a vase in 20 years but the chances of it still fitting are not good as your shape changes as you age.

bishboschone · 04/11/2011 21:40

I don't think these dresses are purchased normal people to last, they are bought by people who a £1000 is nothing. They aren't worth £1000, it's just rich people who Don't care how much things cost but have the idea if that it costs more it must be better. I have seen alot of this stuff close up and it's crap!..of course some of it is beautiful .

thenightsky · 04/11/2011 21:43

Well i've not changed size for the last 30 years, apart from pregnancies.

Oddly.. my measurements have stayed the same, as has my weight... but at 20 years of age I was a size 14 but I'm now a 10 Hmm

OP posts:
thenightsky · 04/11/2011 21:44

bish there is a bit me thinks that too!

OP posts:
HazleNutt · 04/11/2011 21:45

I have. But it would have to be something really, really special. THE dress. Haven't found one yet.

tethersend · 04/11/2011 21:47

Oooh Valentino at the bottom of the page...

SquirtedPerfumeUpNoseInBoots · 04/11/2011 21:55

For a little bit more you could get a Victoria Beckham, and some of hers are classic shapes and colours that would last. And her stuff is quality makes. Not that I have any.

thenightsky · 04/11/2011 22:31

tether ... that last link... wow, just wow. I think I'm getting close to my goal there. But some of them were 3k.

OP posts:
tethersend · 04/11/2011 22:36

Yeah, but 3,000 dollars- which is about fifty quid, right?
