SPF Face moisturizer?

meltedchocolate · 04/11/2011 09:58

So I have just discovered the moisturizer I have been using for ages isn't spf as I thought it was. I need a new one. Any reccomendations? I have dry skin painful skin when I first wash it but it becomes greesy quickly after that. No budget as such but I am poor so nothing that will bankrupt me either!

Thank you in advance :)

It sounds like the wash you are using is way too astringent. This will result in the tight feeling (like your skin is too small) followed by your skin throwing out more oil to counteract. Change that! Nuxe do some gentle cleansers which are reasonably priced.
Ok,for moisturiser it really depends on if there are other concerns too. Try caudalie radiance day fluid which is good on sensitivity & is fairly lightweight. My absolute favourite day SPF is Rodial glamtox. Could be out of your price range though. Kiehls do a very lightweight one called ultra facial SPF.
I assume you are using separate night cream as you must give skin a break from SPF. Also, don't go too high for daily use. The skin needs to absorb some sun for vitamin d & to protect itself too. The only people who should use block are very particular skin conditions or after laser etc. Lots of foundations etc contain SPF so if yours does you won't need separate day & night. Another thing to think about is how much time your face is in the sun. If you run from the tube to the office then home, you don't really need it!

Dermalogica has SPF30, very nice one.

Olay do a 7 signs one with SPF 15. Is that high enough protection for you? It's on offer in sainsburys for 1/3 off I think so under £10.
My skin has dry patches and greasy bits too.
I don't wash with anything other than water and if I'm wearing makeup or feeling grubby I use a cream cleanser.

HTH :)

I've been using the Avene SPF20 Hydrance daily moisturiser to calm down my sensitive skin after a rosacea breakout - it's light but soothing, and has a slight mattifying effect. That and the Skin Recovery Cream have more or less cleared things up in under a week, and my skin feels really soft and hydrated. It's around £13 a tube, but Boots often have it in a 3 for 2 skincare deal (I got the Hydrance daily moisturiser, the Skin Recovery Cream which I've used topically on the rash, and the Soothing Hydrating Face Mask which is also vg).

I use a mosituriser then Clinique City Block on top which is SPF either 25 or 40.

They do a moisturiser called super defence which as SPF 25 if that interests you.

TBH whatever you put on will not last all day- think about when you are in the sun in summer- you need to reapply sun creams every couple of hours, so no moisturiser or make up is going to give you a good spf from 8am to bedtime.

If your skin is dry after washing- don't wash. I have not 2washed" my face for over 40 years- used baby lotion in my teens and always use a cleansing lotion.

Thanks everyone. I am not working atm, am at home with DS. I live in Scotland and really don't get much sun but am prone to getting a red face.

I get painful, tight skin even if my face touches water. (in fact it tends to be worse if I JUST use water with no cleanser) I will try a gentle cleanser like you suggested icelolly. Thanks so much for that advice! I need head and shoulders for my hair though and wonder if that makes it worse? It is mainly my forehead that gets painful.

I don't use night cream at all yet, should I? I am young and have only just started with creams in the last 2 years.

get yourself a trial size of the liz earl cleanser, that will get your skin in tip top condition.

flakemum · 05/11/2011 10:07

I like the Olay SPF 30 in red bottle lasts ages but costs £30 I buy when it's on offer

piratecat · 05/11/2011 10:19

Olay multi radience cream. £7.99 I have sore skin too, which can then have greasy patches. but this stuff is light, and lasts well. I combine it with olay's normal face cream. Or put the normal stuff on first, then put the radience cream on top after a few mins.

The radience one comes in a two types.

I got a Vitamin D deficiency which I strongly think SPF creams contributed to as I walk for about 2 hours a day. Make sure you get some sunlight on your skin too Smile.

motherinferior · 05/11/2011 10:52

But the sun isn't powerful enough at the moment - certainly not in Scotland - for our skins to make vitamin D in any case. It's between April and September that you need 15 minutes a day of sunlight on your skin to make enough vitamin D.

Munkiii · 05/11/2011 10:56

For a budget option Simple moisturiser has SPF in it.

I am using this while I save for my Chanel hydromax!

meltedchocolate · 05/11/2011 11:00

Supplements is the only way forward for vitamin D in Scotland! Wink

I bought some Olay complete care for now til I get Liz earle testers.

Yes I agree in Scotland it is pretty tough to get your Vit D! I'm down South and still managed to get deficient though through the summer. Couldn't believe it with all my buggy walking. My GP said about half the population can have it without being aware, but I've got a bucketload of supplements anyway now Smile.

motherinferior · 05/11/2011 11:31

Government recommendations are that all pregnant and breastfeeding women should take vit D supplements (useful things you could probably have lived without knowing, sorry, have just written about this!)

ameliagrey · 05/11/2011 12:23

You don't need to get sun on your face to get Vit D. it will simply give you wrinkles. Your face is a tiny area and absorbing UVA/UVB on your face will nto make much difference to your vit D leels.

The recommendation is that you get 15 mins of strong sun on your arms as often as possible every day and this will store Vit D throughout the winter months. However, most of us can't manage this in the UK so supplements are the asnwer.

Pinkflipflop · 05/11/2011 12:43

Ultrasun for the face available on QVC is the best thing everGrin it is a moisturizer, primer and has all day SPF30

Fabulous stuff-I use it all year and would highly recommend.

LongGoneBeforeDaylight · 05/11/2011 12:52

I use Superdrug Hot Cloth Cleanser in their vitamin e range which is for dry skin. Then I tone (Nivea) and use their vitamin e day moisturiser which has SPF 15 and is good for dry skin. Definitely think if your skin feels tight when you wash, the hot cloth cleanser will help as it is more like a thick cream that you "polish" off with a muslin square, which is much gentler but also more moisturising.
