Need a decent & v warm kids winter coat- help!

Have been dithering about which winter coat to get for my 10yr old, eventually settling on Gap's 'warmest parks' and it came today, but am a bit disappointed. I got almost the same (looking) coat two years ago for his brother and it was down filled and really good quality but this one feels quite thin (polyester filled) and the fleece lining only actually lines the neck and hood! But, just wondered if anyone else has got one for their kids- is it warm enough??? Really annoying if I have to send it back and lose the P&P. I know I probably sound a bit obsessive but I try and buy really good coats etc for eldest as they have to get handed down to his two younger brothers!

We have a long walk to school everyday so I need something really warm. Didnt want to spend over £50 really. The Gap one was £50 but got 30% off which was great.

Can anyone recommend a good kids winter coat???

I have a regatta coat and although thin its boiling as its wind proof, my partner just bought a trespass one that's similar and my ds aged 6 also has a regatta one that was about £20, they hardly get worn though as I'm too hot wearing mine!

I got the gap warmest jacket this year for ds(7) and it's great, has fleece lining everywhere and down filling. Phaps you ordered wrong one? I'm on phone so can't link but will do later on. There was a long thread about kids warm coats a couple of weeks ago which I'll link too as well.

accesorize, there is a Warmest Jacket (the one I think you got) and a Warmest Parka that I ordered. I went for the parka because it was longer and looked a bit less bulky and my younger ds's one is great, but now I do sort of wish I'd gone for the other one. The thing is, ds is dyspraxic and really struggles with a bulky coat (reaching to get zip done up and rucksack on his back is a nightmare for him!) but he does really feel the cold.

I just wonder if, as Hayley says, even though it feels lightweight, it might actually be really warm. We've got a fake down duvet and it's warmer and lasted better than our old feather one- maybe same logic applies to coats....? Don't know why they'd market it as 'Warmest' if it's not, surely people will just take them back.

Hayley, what sort of Regatta coat would you recommend?

Not sure of product names as my sons is at school for emergencys as he always says he's too hot and I got his last year but just make sure it's wind proof, I think most are my dp got his trespass one direct from their website at the weekend and it came yesterday, I found a 10% off code too

We have 3 in 1 regatta coats, waterproof outer and removable zip in fleece. Similar to this although it may not be long enough for your son in terms of how low you want it to go on his body. This covers my son's bottom.

When we used to walk to school before we moved, if it was raining I put waterproof over trousers on both my sons and whipped them off them when we arrived at school.

The 3 in 1 coats are great as if it is warm you can just remove the fleece so a good coat for all year round. The hood rolls away into a little zip compartment on the collar.

It is very warm without being bulky.

We have the gap 'warmest coats' - the down-filled ones... never found anything better!

i buy my winter coats from lands end. i stand watching loads of sport and have to dog walk each day and they are lovely and warm. i've heard the children's stuff is good on here. adults is hard wearing, well made and practical and washes well. there's a sale on

accessorizequeen · 03/11/2011 20:23

Yosammity, didn't realise there was warmest parka and a jacket. Fwiw I don't think the jacket is bulky and ds doesn't find it so. I would have thought that synthetic not as warm as down and it would be bulkier but you coud only know by comparing them! The thread I was referring to is this one on kids warmest coats.

I have a Togz warm and dry jacket for ds2 which is padded but not much and fleece lined. Not as warm as the gap but still pretty warm and I am impressed by the quality and detail eg the hood has 2 way adjustment. It may suit your ds, the zip is very easy and sturdy. I have 3 ds and try to buy good coats to hand down too.

Just had the Landsend kids catalogue through the door -some seriously warm looking stuff in there

SoupDragon · 03/11/2011 20:56

I've always bought their winter coats from H&M. Great value, warm and waterproof.

drowninginlaundry · 03/11/2011 20:58

accessorizequeen you are right that down insulation is generally warmer, but depends on the quality of the down feathers in question, the fill power ratio and the ratio of down vs feathers. Usually in children's wear you would get the inferior quality commercial down, so there are very little benefits of choosing an actual down coat vs synthetic padding. Also, down stops working when it gets wet, this is why I keep telling folks that it's more appropriate for dry cold winters. In the UK, go for synthetic insulation, it doesn't matter if it gets wet, and it's also less bulky because it can be compressed into a smaller space for same insulating effect (down needs volume because it works by trapping air into the feathers).

I've had the GAP warmest coats/parkas for my boys before, and they are definitely warm!

drowninginlaundry · 03/11/2011 20:58

another vote for H&M!

accessorizequeen · 03/11/2011 21:19

DiL, now that I know that about down, I get all anxious about sending ds1 out in it on a wet day! But he loves it! I had a look at H&M for a coat for dd but didn't like any of them. The boys ones are much nicer, but I dont think quality is there for handing down IMO.

SoupDragon · 03/11/2011 22:02

DS1s H&M coats have been handed down to DS2 and then handed on elsewhere in good condition.

accessorizequeen · 03/11/2011 22:07

I stand corrected!
