what's the difference between chamilia and pandora charm bracelets?

DM wants to buy a charm bracelet for DD for her christening next week end. She's got a leaflet for a charm company called chamilia. They look just like pandora charms to me and was wondering if there is a difference between them or not. Obv DM wants to build up the charm bracelet over the years for DD so we don't want to buy one from a company only for them to dissapear in a few years time Hmm

All I know is you can use Chamilia charms on Pandora bracelets. They seem to be quite widespread in my area.

are you sure that pandora is the way to go?
think about 20 yrs time or whatever will dd be interested in pandora by then? will they have stood the test of time?
5 yrs ago no one had heard of pandora and lots and lots of charm bracelets were for sale on ebay for pennies
pandora will end up the way of 70s charm bracelets

perry it was my mums idea not mine Hmm . Should I ask her to get dd a more traditional style charm bracelet then or something completely different?

just my opinion

lucymr · 28/10/2011 14:56

I have to say I agree with Perry - these are so fashionable that I would doubt they will stay in style. I also don't get why people love them so much, but that's just my opinion ;-)

reastie · 28/10/2011 15:03

No I have to agree with both of you if I think about it, but I'm at a loss as to an alternative to suggest to dm

Well I think they are lovely, and I have both and they are interchangeable.

I think it is a great gift idea and you will struggle to find ANYTHING that will definitely stay in fashion for 20 years.

lucymr · 28/10/2011 20:20

Yes Ladybaabaa I agree that nothing is fashionable for 20 years - but I would think that a christening present shouldn't be fashionable, which is why I would shy away from the pandora style jewellery - rather a classic piece of jewellery.

reastie · 28/10/2011 21:14

Right, well I found this and DM seems to like it so she's getting it not a pandora at all anymore. It's a child's bracelet so doesn't matter so much if it's fashionable or not. IMO it's sweet and pretty .

Personally, I prefer the traditional, expandable, bracelets (maybe 'cos that's what I had) www.silvergroves.co.uk/ecommerce/Scripts/prodList2~idCategory~24~Silver~Baby~Bracelets.htm. I'm just not fond of babies/little girls with dangly jewellery.

lucymr · 29/10/2011 07:01

All lovely, Reastie and Gohwee

chimchar · 29/10/2011 07:14

reastie...i think that the bracelet your mum has chosen will be a nightmare to wear for your dd (but it is lovely!!) it will catch on things, and doesn't look too sturdy.

i saw this...www.diamondkids.co.uk/khdesign.asp which looks cute...you could get your dds name and birth stone or something.

could she not have something lovely to keep instead? an ornament or picture? it might be a bit more long lasting.

to answer your original question, troll beads are great...been around a long time, and all other brands fit onto their chains/bracelets.

chimchar · 29/10/2011 07:16

i like the sentiment behind this...."over the moon" as it sounds your mum is about having your dd!

I still have my baby bracelet and will give it to my daughter when she's finished the "I'm a baby I'm going to eat everything" stage. I know what you mean Chimchar about getting something she can keep, but I treasure my bracelet and love it even though it hasn't fitted me for approx 30 years!!

chimchar · 29/10/2011 07:24

fair enough. i have two...a silver one and a gold one. have never worn them, and don't actually, at this moment in time, know where they are! [hblush]

would never trust my dd with them...she's worse than me!

reastie · 29/10/2011 07:51

thanks guys. tbh i don't like jewellery on babies/children either but this is something she would save for special occasions and hopefully treasure when she's older like lucy does.

chim thanks for the links but they arn't really my mums taste so she wouldn't go for them Confused . goh I showed her bangles like that but she said they looked a bit boring Shock Hmm

DD was given this Kit Heath bracelet which I think is lovely, and has a couple of charms (some below the pic of bracelet) that are brightly coloured enamel and silver.

VFVF · 29/10/2011 19:49

Oops, just realised chim already recommended it!

CookieWook · 17/11/2011 10:03

Just like to add my thoughts - a lot of the charms on the market are now interchangeable - my favourite is storywheels because they are 'real' jewellery not just shiny metal and coloured glass. Storywheels

ISawPINOTSnoggingSantaClaus · 17/11/2011 10:31

Ugh jewellery on babies.

Premium Bonds are what my DC got for the Christenings.

JMO.

JaneFeestelijkBierdekijn · 17/11/2011 10:43

I think Pandora as a name is more appealing. I can't help but think 'chalmydia' when I see the other one!

As others have said though I think something more classic and timeless would be better.
