I am going to a ball - I got the dress (I hope) but am stuck on accessories - please help me I don't do formal

This is my first ball and I am going stag as dh is staying at home with the kids. Though if he came I would only have to listen to him complain about the music, refuse to dance and generally be a pain - so better off without him. Nonetheless I really need to feel confident in how I look if I am a lone cinderella iyswim. So...

The dress = this

But as I am an 18 I probably going to need some kind of shrug?? and a bag and shoes - I don't actually own any heels and I am assuming a pair of maroon doc shoes are not going to suffice or even my best party silver birkenstocks!?? See I don't do formal I have boots with a heel and that is it. I am 5'8" and dh is shorter so I tend to stick to flats. My feet are large (probably an 8 in heels and wide as well) so it is hard to find girly shoes to fit.

So please guide me I am without a clue....

my head is mashed - I am watching a zillion dresses on ebay - but with no real enthusiasm as I am no longer confident that they will fit/ look nice/ not be stained or otherwise damaged and therefore need returning (have had to return two so far both were not as described).

I want to give up Sad

Ok, can't get on pc to have proper look, but I did get a nice midnight blue Grecian type dress from the Very website once. Jersey type flowing fabric, so encompassed giant bosomSmile. Have also had lots of dresses from tk maxx- try their website?

Is rubbish when dress no good and plan goes out window, but don't despair.

I have fallen for this dress but it probably wouldn't fit and is too casual and I am too old and norky but I really like it .... Probably as I could see myself wearing it more than once.

I have just come from your aibu thread and yanbu but I feel your pain as I too have big clompers and big norms.

What about these?

Bubandbump · 01/11/2011 18:03

With this? Stretchy so will fit and some pull in tights will be flattering.

Other than that what is your budget and are you looking for long/ arms etc?

Bubandbump · 01/11/2011 18:24

Or something like this? Depends on how formal but coast and monsoon are generally ok for sizes.

Ohh and I like this - with the black dress though..

Only looked at stretchy so you know it will definately fit and v neck flattering for larger chests

Oh now my DD has woken up so no more window shopping for me!

bigmouthstrikesagain · 02/11/2011 23:59

I think black or gold accessories would look fab and compliment the royal blue colour perfectly. With such a plush colour I don't think you should be looking to introduce any new colours except perhaps, if they were introduced via a pop of colour in an evening or clutch bag. Maybe some earrings like these? Very statement in the right way and they are a great investment as they will go with loads of things.
