Spots on chin and jawline

JosieRosie · 26/10/2011 15:56

For the last few weeks, I have had a crop of spots under chin and along jaw line. I hardly ever usually get spots at all but this lot are persistent- when one goes, there's another to take its place. I'm 31, use Mirena coil but have had that in for 18 months so no change in hormones recently, and haven't changed diet in recent past but did stop smoking nearly 4 weeks ago.
Any thoughts on causes or treatments?
TIA

I would guess that this is related to giving up smoking, as smoking makes your skin dry - giving up is bound to affect it. Hopefully it'll settle once your skin gets used to the change.

JosieRosie · 26/10/2011 16:05

You may well be right lucymr, although I only used to smoke 1-2 a day, wouldn't have thought it would make such a difference!

Hmm - maybe not. How about a change in weather? My skin is very different in winter compared to summer. Other than that I don't know - maybe it's just one of those weird things sent to drive us mad. Hopefully either way, it will settle down soon.

I had a facial the other day and have spots on my chin and jaw she said tbese areas are linked to your ovaries. I'm breastfeeding and haven't had a period for 8 months. Could be a load of rubbish! She didn't really say anything to help apart from the usual loads if water.

alemci · 26/10/2011 20:38

I get spots on my jawline at times and I am 44. It is usually when my period is about to stop. also i believe i tend to touch my neck at times in the day as we all probably do.

alemci · 26/10/2011 20:40

I mean start

JosieRosie · 26/10/2011 20:42

Very interesting Tired - my ovaries and womb are particularly weak parts of my body! Due to Mirena I haven't had a period for 18 months, wonder if my ovaries are freaking out a bit?!?

Quinoderm used to work for me but then didn't with my last outbreak. I got some Freederm gel and has really done the job and not irritated my skin either

Fluffycloudland77 · 26/10/2011 21:10

I was thinking hormones tbh. How much water are you drinking?

JosieRosie · 26/10/2011 21:23

About one and a half litres a day Fluffy, no caffeine either. May give Quinoderm a go brighthair, have used successfully in the past for the odd spot

Mine were awful to the point of contemplating going to the doctor with them Sad I was v impressed by the Freederm

Have you been using fake tan? I know when I have applied fake tan or the holiday skin gradual tanners I get really bad spots under the skin along my jaw line.

When I mentioned them to my beautician she thought it was more likely to be hormonal (relating to testosterone) - I didn't take her that seriously as she is not a doctor. It just seem more than coincidence that they always occurred after tanning products.

JosieRosie · 27/10/2011 09:38

No fake tan. I get quite a few dark single hairs on chin and jawline as well so there may be something in the testosterone theory. I have a GP appointment on Monday about something else so may ask for a blood test to check hormones

I have the same problem, I'm 43, have regular periods and not using any contraception. The breakouts tend to occur around the time of my period but lately they are not clearing up between periods and I'm fed up with it. I've avoided using foundation this week and now have even more than I started with! I drink loads of water and herbal tea and take multivitamins, don't drink or smoke and I have more spots now than I had as a teenager.

Icelollycraving · 27/10/2011 15:04

These are nearly always hormonal. Do you have any signs of pcos? Not scaremongering,it's just a suggestion.
Congratulations on giving up smoking!

JosieRosie · 28/10/2011 10:00

Thanks icelolly, it's not much fun but hey ho!

I don't know what the other signs of PCOS would be but will have a google. I've been bleeding for the past week or so which is very unusual - I have a GP appointment on Monday so will discuss all of this as it probably is connected.

The hair growth & breakout are a very common occurrence with pcos. Hope drs goes ok. Pm if you need any other suggestions!

piellabakewell · 15/11/2011 00:20

Update...after a spot (ha!) of googling, I tried lemon juice on my chin spots twice a day and it's a bloomin' miracle! Miles better very quickly and scars improved too.

Xandrass · 15/11/2011 00:43

I've always read that spots below your cheeks are hormonal. I always get them when I'm due, and got loads when I was first pregnant. I use lush face masks and they calm them down a fair bit (I'm hoping for 6 months of glowing skin for the rest of my pregnancy seeing as I won't have the period spots! but, I'm sure I'll get loads more sometime)
