Maternity coats!

I haven't posted here for a while but have an S&B challenge which I know you'll be able to help with and I'm struggling...

I'm currently pregnant and I NEED a winter coat as the baby isn't due until March so basically it's going to cold for most of my pregnancy. The coats I currently have are too fitted so need to get something which I can wear over a bump, doesn't have to be specifically maternity wear. I'd be wearing it to work as well as casually so needs to be smartish I think.

I bought this but am now not sure as it makes me look HUGE even though I don't have much of a bump yet. Giant blackcurrent springs to mind!

Am 5'3'' and a size 8/10 if that helps!

I'm also due in March time but have a big bump!

I looked here www.hm.com/gb/subdepartment/LADIES?Nr=4294940763 and bought the cape, which is lovely and bought a size up so I can wear it with a jumper for when it gets colder. The belt cinches in nicely above the bump which makes it look less like a belly and more of a bump. The other coat also looks v nice and warmer but don't think I can justify another coat to wear this winter Envy

If you have never ordered from their website either, sign up to the newsletter and you will receive a code for 25% off one item Grin

Hope this helps!

I'm due in March also and just got this, not sure if it'll be smart enough for you but I love it [[http://www.asos.com/ASOS/ASOS-MATERNITY-Double-Zip-Parka/Prod/pgeproduct.aspx?iid=1608512&cid=6413&sh=0&pge=3&pgesize=20&sort=-1&clr=Green

I bought one similar to this from New Look when I was pregnant last winter; I didn't like the buttons, so my lovely SiL bought some nice buttons and replaced them all for me Smile.

Likelucklove, I like that jacket but don't think it would be warm enough for me... thanks for the tip about the H&M discount though, I think I'll try and find something else I like to use it on!

And thanks undeaddoll, but again I'm not sure I'd be warm enough - I do a lit of walking around. Do love parkas though and I wondering if I can justify two coats...

Know what you mean its not the warmest, I think 2 coats are justifiable, a parka for warmer autumn days and a wool coat for winter [hgrin]

saoirse86 · 18/10/2011 21:51

I think this topshop one is lovely.

m&p

Several at Dorothy Perkins

stripeybumpinthenight · 18/10/2011 22:32

I have this lovely navy military cape coat which fits over my mahoosive bump, I'm due in December so am already huge. Cape and swing styles are your friend Smile

BranchingOut · 18/10/2011 22:36

Boden have a lovely swing coat at the moment. Maybe also look in Jojo maman bebe.

rednose · 18/10/2011 23:06

I think cape coat is your answer as you can wear it after baby too

crazybutterflylady · 19/10/2011 09:06

I bought this last winter when I was pregnant (was due in May) and it was a total godsend. Don't think I would have left the house without it. It's now as bad as it looks, I found it quite flattering because of the belt and it is soooo warm.

Mysecretumbrella · 19/10/2011 18:13

Thanks everyone. Crazybutterfylady, I am sorely tempted by that puffy one - after being outside today I just don't think a parka is going to cut it for me! My only concern is that it might swamp me a bit as I'm so short - suppose I could order it and see though.

I do still rather like my JJMB giant blackcurrent coat so maybe I'll hang on to that as well. This is DC2 for me so maybe I can justify it on the basis that I don't really need any other new maternity clothes.

Mine was about knee length I think and I'm 5'6. Even if it's long you'll be pleased of it. I got to the point where I didn't care what I looked like as long as I was warm, especially when it was snowing!!! I was snug and smug :)
Congrats on your pregnancy btw

Mysecretumbrella · 20/10/2011 11:13

Thanks crazybutterflylady. I agree, better to be smug and smug than chilly, even if I do end up looking like a Michelin man!

I bought this coat second hand in the summer for £15, and was very happy to pull it out of the wardrobe this morning!! It's very nice, and since I'm due in early Dec I'll probably wear it for the rest of this winter as I lose the baby weight.

LaTristesse · 20/10/2011 14:49

Have just ordered the Asos padded one. It arrives tomorrow. Can't wait! I may not take it off until Spring, it's so ruddy cold now!

Mysecretumbrella · 20/10/2011 15:38

Ooh, let me know whether you like it! I do really like that Serephine one but fear it may look v stylish but I'll still be cold. I've found a down one somewhere else too but for £145 - will check where.

OP posts:
LaTristesse · 21/10/2011 20:56

It's nice Mysecretumbrella, seems to come up quite large, but then I have to bear in mind I'm only 16 weeks pg now and am going to be the size of a whale by the end of winter, so will be grateful for the extra room I'm sure. It's very warm, but not bulky - I can still move! The big collar is fab! I do generally like a hood, but the big collar makes up for no hood, and I can always add a hat... Only annoying thing so far is that the belt slips out of the belt loops easily due to the slippery fabric. Hardly a deal-breaker!

scotgirl · 21/10/2011 20:59

I never bought a maternity coat for my 2 pregnancy's (babies born in March and April). I did buy a normal but generous parka though. I found I was totally boiling hot both winters I was heavily pregnant and could wear my coat open towards the end with a scarf and I was fine!

Mysecretumbrella · 22/10/2011 07:54

Thanks for the review, LaTristesse. It does sound good. I think what I will do is hang on in there for another month or so then wait until I've got more of a bump before ordering. Will just keep my fingers crossed that there isn't a rush on maternity coats in the meantime!

I take your point scotgirl, maybe it would be more sensible to just wait and see!

OP posts:
Brompsmum · 26/10/2011 23:33

I have been really struggling to find a maternity coat that is warm but flattering that will last me for the next few months (I'm 22 weeks) and found a couple of non-maternity cape style coats today in M&Co that I liked more and were more flattering than any of the maternity styles I tried on.

www.mandco.com/coats+jackets/funnel-neck-cape/invt/1311484greymarl/

www.mandco.com/faux-fur-checked-cape/invt/1304097blue/

I loved the second one and it will be of use after the baby is born too.

Good luck!

DButler · 27/10/2011 12:55

Has anyone tried simply maternity for maternity coats? They do some nice ones from Debenhams which seem reasonable price and warm.
