Having finally got my wardrobe and face under manners (HoC colour and style days and Bare Minerals respectively), I now turn my attention to my hair.

I have long, fine, straight (and wavy in places) hair which gets greasy by day 2. I wash it every 1-2 days and then do a haphazard mixture of letting it air-dry or blowdrying it (sometimes with BBH) - I like it looking natural rather than obviously styled but sometimes I think it just looks ungroomed Sad. Recently had a bit of an experiment with colouring it and have just used an auburn semi. I'm rarely happy with it altho people do compliment me on it (it is at least shiny and silky).

I've got 2 v young DCs and don't have lots of time at the moment (tbh, I prioritise make-up and other stuff over hair styling). i'm also pretty cack-handed when it comes to curling with straighteners etc but would be prepared to practice if it meant nice hair for not too much extra time in the long run.

I've just found out that normal people still use dry shampoo Shock so will try that for day 2 as it can look pretty awful on that day.

What else am I missing out on?

The pictures are on my profile. They are only phone ones taken by yours truly, so gorgeous photography is is not, but the hair is there.

Moving, if your hair is fine like mine, I think that adding hairspray may actually weigh it down and cause the curls to fall flat, especially if it has silicones in it.

Must dash, DS is not as asleep as I'd like him to be.

BattyDevineIntervention · 11/10/2011 21:08

Wow youngblowfish that's amazing!

I need to try this, but can't be faffed tonight. Hmmm. Hours of fun this hair malarky.

natashakaplinkyplop · 11/10/2011 21:25

Ooh your hair looked nice, i'm going to try again tonight.

CakeandRoses · 11/10/2011 23:01

blowfish your hair is stunning!! Envy is it naturally totally straight?!

also - what is your routine wrt to how often you wash your hair?

thank you byeckers - will check out that method too but tbh i'm pretty bedazzled by blowfish's locks and want to replicate exactly what she does!

my hair wasn't damp before putting the pony tail in so i reckon i just had it too tight - youtube girl seemed to double hers over about a million times so i assumed i had to be tight

Second attempt is much better, photos to follow...

Ryoko · 12/10/2011 09:42

I just wash my hair in what ever shampoo and conditioner is on an offer at the time, I comb it, sometimes brush it, never cut it, occasionally colour it bright red, thats about it.

it's not very shiny tho, I want shiny. I have put a few drops of rescue oil in a small spray bottle with water, when ever I wash my hair I shake it up and spray it on before brushing to see if that makes any difference (well it's got lots of different oils in it like evening primrose and sweat almond).

natashakaplinkyplop · 12/10/2011 09:46

Photos are on...

FreakoidOrganisoid · 12/10/2011 10:20

I wash mine at night, comb it, let it dry naturally for a bit while I watch tv then blow dry it. In the morning I just brush it, sometimes straighten it a little bit. Have been meaning to try the sock bun for a while. Washing it at night and sleeping on it seems to make it less frizzy and flyaway

CakeandRoses · 12/10/2011 11:36

natasha your hair looks beautiful! updated pics this evening would be ace as i'm interested to know how long the curls could last :)

what did you do differently this time?

OP posts:
CakeandRoses · 12/10/2011 11:46

oh and i'm on day 3 and about to use dry shampoo rather than washing it for the first time ever (i think). it's not actually as bad now as i thought it would be.

Thanks cake, the curls have dropped a bit but i've had it tied back for a couple of hours (got a 6 month old who likes to hide in my hair)

I washed it Monday night and it just had some leave in conditioner in it. It was too wet, and still damp in the morning. I had it tied back yesterday.

Last night I just combed it, put a bobble in, and dampened it a bit before rolling it with the sock again.

It was a bit loose in bed and I was up twice in the night with ds2 teething, so by the time I got up this morning, it was really loose and lobsided but looked lovely when I took the sock out.

All i did was run my fingers through it, and take photos.
Dh had gone to work, so I couldn't take the back view very well.

I'll take a photo tonight if I get chance. I'll wash it tonight and try again tomorrow.

CakeandRoses · 12/10/2011 12:37

oooh thank you for all of that. your night life sound v much like mine at the mo Sad

good to hear that yours was loose and lobsided and still looked that good tho!

what's your hair texture usually btw?

tis an amazing technique isn't it? i'm dying to try it again but didn't want to wash it again yet as i wanted to see if i could get thru today. mind you, if i wash it now then it will be dry enough to just damp down ready to sock tonight.

decision, decisions....

youngblowfish · 12/10/2011 20:37

The sock is magic, isn't it? :) While I am very grateful for all the compliments (particularly the TOWIE one Wink), I can assure you that my hair in its natural state is disappointingly average and straight, with an occasional lazy kink to it if I slept on it funny. I'll pop some 'before' pictures next time I wash it. My DM actually gave me my last haircut Blush, but the sock just makes it look like I made an effort and, dare I say it, quite glamorous.

Natasha, Cake, you both have lovely hair. The nice thing about the sock method is that you avoid using any heat for the curls and the ends are wrapped up and protected at night, away from little fingers and milk leakages. Looking forward to more pictures!

I use it all the time and sometimes on two or three consecutive nights - in the evening I spray a bit of dry shampoo on my roots, give the hair a good shake and brush, then pop it all in a very high but loose ponytail, wet the ends slightly and roll. The morning result is pretty much the same.

These days, I wash my hair two, sometimes three times a week if I have been cooking smelly food. As you said Cake, it is not actually as bad as a committed daily washer would expect. Plenty of women wash their hair once a week, so I stopped feeling compelled to support L'Oréal's supremacy by religiously washing their products down the drain every morning. Sometimes I wonder what took me so long Grin.

CakeandRoses · 12/10/2011 21:37

well i survived day 3 using dry shampoo earlier and my hair actually looks ok Shock. it's certainly not looking greasy (which is a miracle) but i think my dry shampoo technique could be improved as i do have a greyish cast. maybe i ought to try the brown one next.

there's something quite commendable-feeling about not washing your hair every day although i can't quite figure out what it is Hmm

blowfish aha - so you re-sock it every night even if you don't wash it? so i could have redone it last night really.

something, i'm struggling with is what happens after you wash your hair? do you put up with it being straight that day until you're able to resock it overnight or do you always wash it early evening?

and thank you for the compliment on my hair. i have to say that it's def given it more body even tho i didn't get many curls.

BattyDevineIntervention · 12/10/2011 21:56

Cake, you will find with the dry shampoo if you hang in there and go 3 days you might get to a point where you can go 3 days without dry shampoo! I started with dry shampoo but now I can go 3 days every time and only use it if I need to go even longer!

Still haven't tried it but will!

Grin
natashakaplinkyplop · 12/10/2011 22:11

Right, photos taken... can't be arsed going on the computer to upload them though, i'll do it in the morning.

My hair still had a bit of a curl left, but i'd got wet both times on the school run and again when I went shopping, plus i'd tied it back several times and ds2 had tried to eat it... So it was looking a bit frizzy and messy.

Just washed it, i'll leave it to dry overnight. So it'll be a bit wavy in the morning and i'll try again tomorrow night.

cake, your hair looks thicker than mine, maybe try 2 socks, half in each on top of your head... princess leia style, just a bit higher up?

CakeandRoses · 12/10/2011 22:35

tatty! i didn't recognise you Grin

tis a whole new world this not washing it every day/using dry shampoo thing - i now feel like everyone's been doing it all along apart from me

interesting to hear that your hair started to adjust to the 4 3 day thing. it does make sense from a colour POV esp now i'm trying semis - twill last 3 times as long!

natasha you tease! sounds like you treated it rough so might have still been really curly still if you hadn't got wet etc.

my hair is def not thick - it's honestly just the sock which kinda bouffed it out instead of curling it. which isn;t all bad.

Happydogsaddog · 12/10/2011 23:00

Have re-socked tonight, looked quite nice today, not bushy like yesterday, I don't know how to do the photos - uploading them I mean, any advice or is that a whole new thread Blush

CakeandRoses · 13/10/2011 09:15

Day 4: OMG - my dirty hair is soooo curly!! it's also massive. i can't quite believe it's my hair.

i ran out of time to wash it last night and just socked it last night as an experiment, intending to wash it this morning but it looks so amazing i can't bear to wash it out now. very bizarrely, it still looks fine Confused altho is starting to itch a bit

will try to take pics in a mo but might not get time to load til later.

happy you need to make your profile public and then you'll see a photo option in there. sorry - in a rush but if that doesn;t make sense i'll explain in more detail later

OP posts:
CakeandRoses · 13/10/2011 09:48

just uploaded it - it's not as curly as some of yours Envy but i think that's party cos it's loaded down with oil and stuff and partly that my hair isn't as long (recently had it cut so hopefully it will be longer again soon)

OP posts:
FreakoidOrganisoid · 13/10/2011 11:24

Not sure it will work on my hair. My hair is fine (though lots of it) and layered, when I tried rolling it round the sock bits of the layers kept falling out and I couldn't get a tight roll. It fell out at some point during the night and thismorning I did have more volume but not really any more waves than normal (and they were messy waves not sleek ones-just looked like I hadn't dried my hair!)

natashakaplinkyplop · 14/10/2011 19:52

Sorry to tease you cake, finally put the photo on for you.
Most of the curls had gone, but it was still quite wavy. My hair did get a bit battered during the day though.
