Really stupid question about wellies and/or waterproof boots

I am determind we will be more outdoors-y this winter but am having a footwear dilema. I'm not a huge welly boot fan but I'm assuming they are the only truly waterproof boot? It is likely I shall be required to do some shallow paddling...

Anyone? Please?

Really? Which style do you have ristretto? I think I just hate wellies because I have skinny legs and narrow feet and they always feel so heavy and ill-fitting.

I had some timberland leather boots that were fairly waterproof, I doubt I could have walked through an actual puddle but they were fantastic in snow, wet grass mud etc.

Realistically, I think there will definitely be puddles involved. There's no escape from wellies, is there?

Hmm. This depends on the terrain, and how long you plan to be in it. Wellies ARE waterproof, it is true. BUT they don't give your feet much contact with the ground and don't allow you to be nimble, because they are thick inflexible tubes. If you plan to be walking on any unstable terrain - scree - hummocks - then wellies aren't really safe, you should probably get some goretex walking boots. If you're doing beach, or country park type stuff, then wellies will be fine. This season, reputable outdoor brand, Merrell are doing styles which are less rugged and more fashion but still waterproof. Try Javari. You could always get Dubarrys, but I'm guessing you'd rather not spend £300.

Ok not elegant but VERY warm and comfy!

Aigle Parcours - they are shaped around the ankle to grip your foot etc more like a walking boot. The 'Variable' style also allows you to pull them in at the sides. I've had mine two winters and love them - you can even get neoprene lined ones for super warmth (but also super ££££s). I can't stand wellies that flap about either but these are great.
