Sophisticated, rich Mulberry or muted, classic Chocolate ?

NomDePlumPudding · 19/12/2005 10:12

For my bedroom ?

It is currently quite a bold beach-house shade of blue and I fancy a change. The blue is only on one wall (the one with the bed on it) and the rest are a rich creamy/ivory colour, as is the carpet. We have blue curtains which tone in with the wall, our bedding is plain, crisp white. So I'd only be changing the colour of the curtains and the bed-head wall (with colour accents on the bed - a couple of gorgeous cushions etc). So it won't be overkill of either shade (as they are so bold), and because I'm not doing everything in either shade I can afford to buy good quality.

Both colours will look good in the room, with the beech and chrome furniture (good quality), but I can't decide which to go with. DH has no opinion on it, says he likes it as it is and thinks I'm mad to want to change it.

I love the rich jewelled tones of damson/mulberry shades and I think they would look rather sophisticated, but I also like the cooler contemporary stone and chocolate shades too. Arghhhhhh. I can't decide.

What do you think ?

I suppose I worry that the mulberry/damson colourway is going to be a bit hard to get just right, and that the neutral choclate/stone option is a bit, well, overdone

are you quite mad??? its christmas in 6 days time! however, having just painted my dining room i can empathise! id go for mulberry/damson. Have you seen the laura ashley catalogue? lovely fabrics to co-ordinate with this c/scheme.

MrsSpoon · 19/12/2005 10:16

Love the sound of the Mulberry but the chocolate would be nice too! Not very helpful. Our bedroom is currently a deep red colour and I want to change it but this is probably because it is all over the walls (old Victorian house so can get away with it) rather than just an accent.

NomDePlumPudding · 19/12/2005 10:17

I haven't but I will, there is a sale at my local Laura Ashley store atm too.

ISPCMKS - I won't be changing it this side of Christmas, that's for sure ! The kids break up tomorrow and I have still got sooooo much to do.

the thing with damson/mulberry IS hard to get right. we have it in our living room and (though I am really not a big stickelr for this kind of thing) even I can see that the shades clash a bit
I am quite fond of chocolate brown as a decor colour, I think it can look v sophisticated

IsawPussycatmommakissingsanta · 19/12/2005 10:22

NDPP....have you looked at the damson shade with the chalky pink thats around atm? we have the chalky pink in our room but then our furniture is kind of cream/painted,, not as modern as yours sounds. Is your house new or older?

hativity · 19/12/2005 10:23

If you are going for colour on one wall have you thought of wall paper? A friend of mine has done this in her bedroom - it's a pale blue, which, obviously you don;t want - but it's a kind of modern version of a brocade pattern and it looks totally stunning. You could go for something with a cream background, with either mulberry or chocolate pattern - there are some beautiful stylised flower prints - I'd be wary of doing one wall in a solid block of either of these two colours. I'd go for chocolate - firstly cos I prefer it, second cos it will be easier to tie with other stuff, third coz it won't neccessarily mean you need to chuck out every hint of blue. blue and brown are great together.

NomDePlumPudding · 19/12/2005 10:23

I do think that choc/stone is the easier way to go, and it does look great. I also think that DH would prefer it, but the damson could look soooooo sumptuous

Harpsichord......wow i must be getting stylish in my old age, we have chocolate and cream in our lounge (((houseproud emoticon))))

moondog · 19/12/2005 10:25

NdP,my bedroom is cream with one mulberry wall (not my choice-as painted when moved in).Iwas going to change it,but it's grown on me now.
Have mulberry curtains, with a linen lining that peeks out from underneath and cream carpets.

I've got a modern silver iron bed, built in cupboards with huge silver handles and a big silver Art Deco mirror above my bed. Also an Art Deco (read restored junk shop find, ditto mirror) reading lamp and then on my wooden chest of drawers,a big globe lamp like a moon.

Iti s restful and works (I think!)
Chocolately browns are too mid 90's I tihnk-already looking dated.

NomDePlumPudding · 19/12/2005 10:28

We have a lovely 3 part oil seascape above the bed at the moment which looks lovely with the blue. It could work with the choc stone but def wouldn't work with the mulberry option.

I like the idea of big bold wallpaper but prob wouldn't go with it, DH wouldn't go for it.

ISPMKS - My house is 8 years old, so v modern in house terms. It's going on the market (again) in the next 6-8 months and we are planning to buy a Georgian house next but I think that either of the 2 colourways would work in either period.

NomDePlumPudding · 19/12/2005 10:29

moondog, that sounds very similar to the vision I have of mulberry in my room !

moondog · 19/12/2005 10:30

lol Ndp!
Hey,we moved from a Georgian house to a brand new one. Not my taste exactly but good for us now as we are abroad a lot. Very low maintenence.

MrsMillsletoe · 19/12/2005 12:16

How about both? We have 3 cream walls and carpet, the bedhead wall is an aubergine colour, and there's chocolate brown throws, curtains and bits and pieces. Looks gorgeous.

ISawFrannyandZooeyKissingSanta · 19/12/2005 12:44

Oh do the warmer colours, chocolate and stone in the bedroom is a bit harsh don't you think? You can make it really boudoir-ish, or just opulent and luxurious with mulberry type colours.

NomDePlumPudding · 19/12/2005 12:50

Franny&Zoey - The thing is I'm genuinely torn over it. I like the clean, sharp neutrals, I think they can be made to look cosy without getting fluffy or messing up the contemporary look. But the sheer luxury of the other scheme is irresistible too. I just don't know.

Have the clean sharp look in another room. It doesn't do to be clean and sharp in your bedroom, IMO.

moondog · 19/12/2005 14:10

Yes,you can have it all!
My bedrooms are all completely different (like anyone cares......)

DoesntChristmasDragOn · 19/12/2005 14:13

Mulberry. Chocolate is, after all, simply brown

lunaturkey · 19/12/2005 14:33

mulberry is a better bedroom colour than chocolate imo as long as it is mixed in with cream colour to tone down the richness i would have it on a feature wall and bedspread etc!

MrsDoesChristmas · 19/12/2005 14:36

I don't know if chocolate is such a nice colour in a bedroom.
Our bedroom has magnolia walls and everything else is mulberry colour - bedspread, curtains, lampshade is pink..
I love it.

FrenchKissUnderMistletoeGirl · 19/12/2005 14:42

mulberry definitely
Like the idea of a wall with wallpaper rather than paint, though, there are some great wallpapers now....

hativity · 19/12/2005 15:40

I don't agree that chocolate = clean crisp neutrals. Stone is maybe a bit cool for a bedroom, but deep brown can be very sumptuous - especially using the right fabrics.
