Decent wellies for lots of wakling?

I think I need a pair of wellies for the many miles of school run walking I do every day, often in the rain. Practical, comfy to walk in, long-lasting, not too ugly but no silly patterns like roses or horses iykwim. I have good winter boots so am covered for ice and snow walking, it's just the autumn and spring wet weather I'm thinking ahead to (as I stubbornly stay in my sandals until half term). Anyone got any personal reccommendations?

In my experience, wellies are not a good idea when walking many miles a day. Maybe get some good looking walking shoes/boots.

Thanks for the reply, cedge. I've followed the same train of thought for the past few years but then when I get home with damp cold feet...urgh, then I wonder whether wellies are the way forward. I have walking shoes but they have started to split so no longer waterproof. My problem is vanity I just can't make myself wear walking shoes or boots with a skirt (which I mainly wear)...so these 'good looking' walking boots/shoes you speak of are probably more what I am looking for

Having spent many years in all manner of wellies, 'Noras' are the most comfortable; and were light, long lasting and sturdy - the Dolomit or Antonia models particularly. 'Muckboots' promised much but were heavy and rubbed my heels. Cheap brands didn't last.

I'd second the option of looking at walking boots though.

Or a muck boot, part welly part lace up boot. I have chunky calves so wellies were uncomfy, but muck boots are a happy compromise for mucky/wet walks. £30 from MVF a few years ago and they take all sorts of abuse and easy to clean. Navy in colour, did replace the insole with a more supportive one.

I have got some lovely boots from Clarks, Goretex so keep my feet lovely and dry, dead comfy too. Will find a link...

Kellestar, muck boots are a thought. Will have a look to see if they'll go with my skirts.

Keynesian, I looked up Noras and found nice kids' ones. Will keep searching for adult ones on your reccommendation.

I'll leave it to you as to whether you could bring yourself to insert your feet into them.

Mine have done three years of school runs and dog walking and show little sign of wear, plus they are extremely comfortable and soooooo warm, they don't even need thick socks in the snow.

Depends what your budget is, I have these and they were worth every penny. Definately an investment buy though!

Fab in mud, snow, rain, in town, I pair them with pretty much anything, I am outside in fields a lot with my job and they keep my feet warm and dry the whole time, whatever the weather.

Wildthings - sssshhhh don't tell but I really like them (plum or brown though?)

Poke - Like Like Like! A bit like Megbusset's clarks boots. How are they around (chunky) calves though?

Lots of space, I have average calves I would say and I can fit two pairs of knee high thick socks in mine, plus jeans and they feel comfortably snug. They seem to come up a little on the large size too, I am a size 6 in all shoes but I had to buy these in a 5.5.

I've just bought some purple Joules muck boot type things, and they are v comfortable and practical.
Or how about some Merrel Prevoz - waterproof and OK with skirts
