Woud you spend over £200 on a dress ?

I saw the most goregous dress today in Hobbs. DH actually told me to buy it but it cost £229 (mind you it was reduced from £299!). I didn't dare try it on.
The only occasion I have to wear a dress like that is for a works Xmas Doo which it not that posh a function.

So the question is - Would you have bought it if your DH / DP actaully gave it the seal of approval ? ie you didn't have the hide the price tag !

erm... if i was going to wear it a lot i probably would, i'd have to REALLY love it though

LadyTophamInAChristmasHatt · 15/12/2005 20:07

No.

I'd be able to a whole load of more wearable stuff for that.

MistleToo · 15/12/2005 20:08

never

northerner · 15/12/2005 20:09

No, I'd go and spend the £200 on clothes but buy lots!

NomDePlumPudding · 15/12/2005 20:09

Yes, if I had enough lovely ocassions for such an item.

SenoraPostrophe · 15/12/2005 20:11

No, no, no.

you will spill red wine on it the first time you wear it.

(but I am neurotic about clothes and prices. have never spent more than 20 quid on anything except my wedding dress)

hunkermunker · 15/12/2005 20:13

No. Couldn't justify that much on a dress. Wish I could though!

puddle · 15/12/2005 20:13

I'd do a cost per wear. If I thought I'd get 10 wears out of it I'd buy. Otherwise no way.

GingerBearingGifts · 15/12/2005 20:15

I have a Dior cocktail dress inherited from my mum that she bought for 80 guineas in 1965. What that would have been in today's money I could only hazard a guess. It is truly amazing, stiff black net in overlapping layers, diamante spagetti straps and a huge bow on the bodice. As it is about a size 12 though I haven't worn it for years, I am keeping it for DD.
The most I have paid for a dress was £500 for my wedding dress.

puddle · 15/12/2005 20:17

Sound gorgeous ginger.

I have a dress I bought for £150 five years ago- was loads of money to me at the time - but have worn it a lot and still looks fantastic. Has done me at least four weddings and lots of dressy nights out.

WeWhizzzYouAMerryXmas · 15/12/2005 20:17

Red wine wouldn't be a problem as its black

No I couldn't spend that much even though it was beautiful (long & swishy with lovely beading on it). No one at the Xmas doo would notice it & I don't go to enough cocktail evenings - it is a timeless dress though.
Bought one from Coast instead £70 (that was half price too!)
I was just gobsmacked that DH kept telling me to buy it !

Yep, I would and have (in my past life as a 'young professional'). Worth every penny! I still have the dress - a Dianne von F. wrap dress.

MrsMillsletoe · 15/12/2005 21:03

Yes I would buy it, but only if I adored it. Think of it as a 'faithful' dress, one that will never let you down or an investment piece.

If you don't buy it now, it'll always be the dress you never had, iykwim.

GoodKingGeorginars · 15/12/2005 21:09

if it was that fabulous and you felt/looked amazing in it, then yes. you would always wear it to suitable occasions and it would pay for itself, rather than buying several cheaper outfits you get fed up with and then you find yourself shopping for a new thing every time. But the Coast one sounds lovely too!

notasheep · 15/12/2005 21:13

notasheep · 16/12/2005 21:21

And on wearing it at Manoir Quat Saisons(sorry to name drop!) the staff thought us ladies were something in the fashion industry!! Didnt tell them i work for social services, like a bit of mystery!

christmaslovingbluealien · 16/12/2005 21:27

well, i probly would never spend that on a dress, but would, and have spent that on a sari!
but a sari doesnt date that quickly iyswim. should get about a decades worth out of it. and itlll be back in another thirty or forty!

WeWhizzzYouAMerryXmas · 16/12/2005 21:28
