Should I cut all my long hair off?

bigkidsdidit · 22/09/2011 19:18

I am FED UP with having shit hair. My hair is on my shoulder blades, quite curly if left alone but straight if blown dry. Since having DS I do not have any time for it and I leave for work at 5.30am ish now too so am not inclined to fiddle with it at the expense of sleep! So EVERY DAY I wear it in a bun on top of my head. Every day.

I've made an appt with a senior stylist at Trevor Sorbie on Saturday and I'm going to put myself in his hands.

I am really edging towards just chopping it all off. Or at least just below chin length or something. I need some sort of style!

Shall I just do it? If not what shall I do??

I had mine chopped this week (again). Had it first cut short 4 years ago. I love it as mine was unruly and a nightmare when long, made me look old and hair looked buggered due to dying it, straightening it etc

Peops are right saying it is hard growing it through all the stages ....it really is but short is easy.
I think if you tie it back a lot it really isn't that different on the face especially if you have some long pieces down the side of your face.
Choose a good hairdresser who will look at the shape of your face and guide you but also listen to what you want......
I am seriously so pleased with mine but spent years too scared to cut it but was so glad when I did. Mine (when long) is wavy, not curly and not straight....looks shit when left to dry naturally and is like a frizz ball but not anymore! Now it is short , it is glossy and sleek and takes years off me!

daenerysstormborn · 23/09/2011 17:11

i'd say chop it off!, it'll grow back if you don't like it. mine is a bob and i'm even fed up with that and want to go shorter, something like this

weevilswobble · 23/09/2011 17:18

I say the difference between a devastating haircut and a good one is about 2 weeks.

After 2 weeks you've got used to it and learnt how to do it.

Cut it, cut it!

said · 23/09/2011 17:46

That's because you didn't get it cut short enough Poke

My hair sounds exactly likejammygirl's - wavy and frazzled when longer, can never leave it to dry naturally. But shorter and it's swishy!

DoubleDegreeStudent · 23/09/2011 17:58

Just be completely honest in your appointment. I have long (boob length), thick wavy hair that takes hours to dry if left naturally, which I prefer to do. I asked my hairdresser for a cut that "I can wash, comb through and then LEAVE to dry naturally without ending up looking like a total idiot". Bless her, she did it. I'm sure TS will sort you out - just make sure you are perfectly clear about how long you want to spend on it.

DoubleDegreeStudent · 23/09/2011 18:00

Sorry, meant to add - how long have you been fed up for? I go through weeks of wanting it all gone, but I always stick it out and then I am glad. I'd say don't cut. Just trim and restyle.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 23/09/2011 18:25

See, I'm the opposite of some of you, mine is just below the shoulders, with layers (shortest is about mouth length, no fringe). Sleek on top, wavy/curly from the ears downwards. If I blow dry it it turns into a frizzball (except using Babyliss Big hair which gives sleek waves).

Comb it and leave it to dry, takes 2-3 hours but looks fabulous, the curls well defined, the top all shiny. BUT it only works because of very good layer cutting, I also avoid silicones and rarely straighten it. Get it trimmed every two months, job done.

inmysparetime · 23/09/2011 18:33

Chop it!
I grow my hair out, then get it chopped to shoulder length every 2 years. Hairdressers are usually reluctant to cut that much off, but be strong, it feels so good to have all the split ends gone. Be prepared for a few days of mourning for the long hair though, as you run your fingers through your hair and it ends too soonSad

hillyhilly · 23/09/2011 18:33

I've just done it! I went from shoulder length (for ages with and without layers at different times) to a chin length bob - terrible for me as I couldn't tie it up after sport or on wet days, to short (think Kate Middleton).
I only had it done on Weds but so far I am chuffed to bits - I am not buried under my hair, you can see my face, and I am not scared of a bit of rain/ damp.
I washed it after swimming yesterday, gave it a quick blowdry (maybe 5 mins) and it has been great ever since, I am about to go and attack it with the straighteners to get it a bit more stylish to go out tonight.
I really do feel it suits me, my lifestlye and my hair type (fine but with quite a lot of body and quite a few kinks but not quite curls).

bigkidsdidit · 23/09/2011 18:46

Short like Kate Middleton? I have the peasant's version of her hair now, has she cut it?

I'm all scared! Also about going into TS with my raggedy bits and home dye job. I have an interview for my dream job on Thursday so I'm just going to throw my credit card at him and let him do cut, colour, whatever.

I think my face can take short hair - I wear it in a severe bun most days and I think it suits me. Just scared it will go all curly and I'll look like sideshow bob!

I'll put photos up tomorrow. Appt 10.15!

Good luck hun ;)

forrestgump · 24/09/2011 09:23

I came on purposely to say place your faith in a pro and enjoy xxxx

bigkidsdidit · 24/09/2011 13:24

well he didn't cut it off! Said it was nice hair and I'd regret it. I even said 'what about a new colour' and he said no, the one you have now is nice. Confused so I attempted to throw my card at him and he bounced it back to me!

It is a nice cut, he's taken about 3 inches off and put in graduated layers around my face. It looks a bit limp now because he straightened it to dry cut. But I think with my BBH it will look good.

Anyway, I suspect next payday I'll be abck getting the whole lot off!

I've just had 3 inches cut off my hair and I LOVE it!

I have naturally curly hair, which due to a lot of blow drying and not a lot of regular chops was looking bloody awful. I had it cut from (when soaking) bra-strap length to just below shoulder length in an asymmetrical bob. I had a looong consultation with my hairdresser before I did it!

The upshot is, the length and style suit me far better than the long hair, which was looking very scraggy, and it looks so much healthier.

So, go for it, but make sure you have a look for styles that would suit you. I went on the British Curlies forum for some style inspiration as I wanted something I could embrace my naturals with and not have to spend hours drying and styling!

CountBapula · 24/09/2011 20:08

Wot no pics? Wink

OnEdge · 24/09/2011 20:14

I have curly hair, just had it cut from long to an inclined bob with "shattered" ends, short at the back and about chin length at the front. Its the best thing i ever did. I mess it all up and put a bit of wax in it, then it has a side parting, and the big side i clip back to my head. It is trendy and takes seconds to do. The messier it gets, the better it looks.

bigkidsdidit · 24/09/2011 20:34

Not dramatic enough for pics! Just looks like nice trim.

OP posts:
bigkidsdidit · 24/09/2011 20:36

In fact I'm disappointed tonight which has crystallised my feelings - I'm def going to go back next pay day for something more dramatic. Yours sounds nice OnEdge :)

That tells you all you need to know then. I go in approx 5 year cycles with mine, I'm loving having it long at the moment, but the day will come when I get it all chopped off again.

hillyhilly · 25/09/2011 23:15

Hah sorry, I always get the names wrong, it's it bit shorter than Kate Silverton ( newsreader).
Ps I love or event more now than a few days ago, can wash and dry it in half an hour and it looks great, it just suits me
