So what SHOULD a woman in her late forties be wearing?

. . . if late forties is too old for jeans?

. . . and if she likes wearing jeans and boots and leggings and long tops and all that, and that's what she has always worn?

Does it have to be per una? Worse still . . . does it have to be < whispers > expensive, capsule-wardrobe classics?

Can I no longer buy cheap stuff?

I went to the shops today, and I nearly howled like a wolf in the high street "But I am too ooooooooooooooooold!"

I NEED HELP

I wouldn't worry a quick review of these threads any day of the week confirms women of all ages dressing badly.Grin

OP you really ought to get out more Smile the world is full of women in their 40s 50s, 60s , 70s etc wearing jeans.

I think it's when you start "dressing your age" that the rot sets in.

I am mid 50s and wear skinny jeans, tunics, leggings, above the knee skirts with flat biker boots, etc etc. I would not be seen dead in outfits that are supposedly aimed at my age- ie Alexon, CC, etc etc.

It's how you wear it that counts- I know my faults- namely upper arms, so keep them covered mainly, and i think short skirts with heels look tarty , but honestly- it's not about age it's about your size and shape, and how you put an outfit together.

My mum is 61, I am 26 - we frequently buy and wear the same items (usually aim for different colours though to avoid clone effect), difference being I might wear a top with a mini and she might pair it with slim fit cords (though I also do this).

Neither of us dresses inappropriately for our age, the main thing is knowing your body shape. My mum would no more wear Per Una than I would, and rightly so!

You wear whatever you like OP, I'm sure you'll look great!

Oh, this has cheered me up a little. I opened the door to a friend the other day, wearing a grey/silver sequin skirt and grey cashmere jersey and dark grey tights. She looked me up and down and asked if I was going out somewhere disco-ish. I was (temporarily) rather cast down.

But the sequins + woolly look has been endorsed by Bonsoir. Yay!

animula · 17/09/2011 20:14

(Am late-40s, btw.)

Bonsoir · 17/09/2011 20:18

Sequins and big knit = a good AW day look IMO, right mix of comfort and glamour Smile

Bonsoir · 17/09/2011 20:24

And thank you, animula, because your endorsement convinced me to pay for the Zara sequin skirt that was sitting in my shopping basket being pondered over! Just need to find the right knit, but shall wait to receive skirt and go physically shopping in order to get a good match.

I do like Style and Beauty.

Btw, the outfit you described earlier, Bonsoir, sounds like a gorgeous update of 60s-ish, Paco-Rabanne-ish look. I've no idea what the weather in Paris is like - it's lowering and gloomy here - but I can't help but feel it must have brought a little sunshine and optimism into your environs.

Bonsoir · 17/09/2011 20:35

Oh the weather was dreadful today and I had a hangover was a bit tired after going out for slightly painfully competitive women's dinner at the Mini Palais (restaurant of the Grand Palais) last night, so I needed to get a bit dressed up to feel human!

KristinaM · 17/09/2011 20:58

Indeed, seqins, lace or leather mini skirt must ONLY be worn with big wooly jumper or silmilarto dress it down. NEVER with heels or amything tarty. No flesh showing either please

Bonsoir · 17/09/2011 21:04

Yes, generally speaking you only need a single piece of ultra feminine clothing on at a time!
