Hold ups? Is there a trick?

is there a trick to getting them to stay "held-up"?

Hate hate wearing tights but seem to spend all day hoiking hold ups up, which is not attractive.

Are any brands better than others?

Have worn them for years with no issues. I mostly buy opaque ones as they last longer and are a good alternative to coloured tights.

I never wear moisturiser with them.

I buy them online from somewhere like UK tights or a similar site. They all have a good selection. From experience I like Transparenze (the style is Miranda I think), or Orublu or Falke. Although Falke is pricey and better for special occasions only!

I always use suspender belts to hold my hold ups up. My legs are slim and the hold ups always fall down otherwise. I use the six clip belts with metal clasps so that the last longer, also ones with a wide band that has 4 hooks. I found the best ones are from What Katie Did

I wear them all the time, mostly because I have an uncanny ability to ladder and can replace one leg instead of two at a time. My view is that it is all about the width of the sticky bit at the top. M&S are good, Boots are not so great, Pretty Polly are OK. I’ve never tried Wilford as I get vertigo at the price. I also never remember to put fabric conditioner in the machine or moisturise in the morning plus I have chunky thighs. I think these are key factors.

I use Asda ones and pull them up as far as humanly possible.

No don't do this

5) The hold-up must be worn mid thigh.

Schlmobear is right. As well as no moisturiser etc, clean silicon band etc advice already given, the 100% key to this is a good brand and to pull them up to the mid thigh and NO HIGHER. This is where they are designed to sit.

I was given this advice in a hosiey shop Wolford I think many years ago and it is true and life changing. Test it out at home if you don't believe it - if you are an almighty hoiker as I used to be, it does take time to get over the sensation of they are too low down and about to descend. Once you have the confidence of knowing this won't happen.

PaperRockMissile · 09/02/2018 10:20

Once they have settled into the right place you shouldn' t need to touch them again until you take them off. No hoiking.

I have a variety of pairs, mainly M&S and Debenhams. Never have problems; once they are on I never adjust them; however they sometimes give me really sore blisters. I tend to go for the more "luxe" ones with wide lace bands. I wear them slightly higher than mid-thigh, though.

Wolford. I have pairs 10 years old in perfect condition. Cost per wear is nothing. Never fall down.

The problem these days with suspender belts is they are too bloody fiddly.... my mum used to have them with a proper clasp on the suspender... also they sit far too low, unless you wear knee or below knee length skirts/dresses you are at risk of exposing stocking top.... artistic are good and last a couple of wears, Asda are good but don’t stick after one wash, boots I always end up with one leg that just slips down halfway through the day, primary black ones stayed up but didn’t stick after a wash and nude didn’t stay up all day, have heard Wolford are good but I wouldn’t buy them at that price either as I wear hold ups every day and that is not far off a third of my take home pay

LisaD76 · 16/02/2019 19:16

Lambzig ...really what you don’t wear through the toes when standing all day? Maybe I should try a pair as after a couple of wears I go through even though I wear toe covers underneath.... can only assume it’s a mix of standing all day and wearing heeled courts so I get that inevitable pull on the toe

OP asked this question 7 years ago so I think she will have it sorted by now.

As an ex lingerie photographer the models use to pass in tips by saying always purchase a size bigger than actually are and after showering or bathing to rub baby oil into the thigh because apparently it helps with the silicone adhesion n will stay up for the duration. However, I can't speak from personal experience but both tips seem logical.

RandomMess · 02/10/2019 08:00

I've ended up hunting this down on a bad stocking day, think my legs are too short and slim Sad

Bjhsum · 05/10/2019 21:50

As a recently retired fashion model photographer the models I have worked with used to always say that one of the tricks is that most women don't do s fr hold ups are concerned is to purchase 1 size bigger than u actually are. That way they will not be put up too much stretch and will always stay up n no hoiking. Hope this helps.
