Good but cheap foundation (does it exist?!) for daughter?

Cynthia32 · 29/08/2011 17:22

My teenage daughter is just about to go off to university, and realises she won't be able to afford the same foundation (clarins) as she has been using for the past couple of years. I was wondering whether Mumsnet could suggest any good foundations suitable for young skin that cost £10 or less?

Moisturiser at six? To me that makes far less sense than a teenager in foundation. Why on earth would a six year old need moisturiser?

Bonsoir · 29/08/2011 20:33

She has dry skin - as do many children. Dry skin is rampant among children.

redglow · 29/08/2011 21:20

I usually go to markets where you can get real bargains which are proper makes.

Of course most 18 year olds were foundation. So do alot of fifteen year old no harm in it.

redglow · 29/08/2011 21:22

Bonsior never heard of a six year old wearing cleanser and moisturiser. Why not use a bit of baby lotion?

seeker · 30/08/2011 08:00

I didn'd say that teenagers don't wear foundation- of course they do, I've got one!

I said I think it's sad that they feel they have to.

And as for a 6 year old with a "religious" cleansing and moisturising routine- well, words fail me.

pamplemousserose · 30/08/2011 08:40

I too think its sad for teenagers to wear foundation.

VeraCanSignChocolateAndWine · 30/08/2011 09:04

What's wrong with a 6 year old having a cleansing moisturising routine?

Soap drys out some people's skin, children included. And personally I wouldn't touch baby oil.

seeker · 30/08/2011 09:51

The clue is in the age. She's 6!

switchtvoffdosomelessboring · 30/08/2011 09:58

I'm impressed with bonsoir, my children won't hardly wash their face without bribery or shouting.

In answer tot he OP Rimmel 25hr long (or somthing along those lines) is very good and in budget.

I would encourage her to get a good tinted moisturiser. The Boots No 7 is very good. Or a bottle of Mac face and body foundation/moisturiser its about £15 but the bottle is massive, Ive had mine for 18 months now. I love it at this time of the year and people always say my skin looks fab when I wear it.

I agree an 18 year old doesnt need a "proper" foundation. They look too claggy.

tethersend · 30/08/2011 10:24

Most of the models in the adverts for the foundation are below 18. Now that's sad.

SchrodingersMew · 30/08/2011 11:42

I'm 20 and I wont leave the house without foundation on, I really need it.

My skin is crap, I have a lot of pink pigment and my cheeks always look really pink, so does my nose and I hate it!

I don't think there's anything wrong with a teenager wearing foundation unless they are painting it on and look tangoed!

mamalovesmojitos · 30/08/2011 11:45

Maybelline dream creamy is lovely.

stripeybump · 30/08/2011 11:49

I wish I'd worn foundation when I was a blotchy malnourished student! I thought it was only for pretty girls Blush

As long as you or a make-up counter person teaches her to use it well and sparingly, I don't see a problem at all.

Sleep + water + decent nutrition + clean face + well-applied minimal make-up = 'natural beauty'. At 31 I have finally learned this. Who was it who said that a woman's beauty is made not born or something? Am crap at quotes.

ameliagrey · 30/08/2011 11:52

I don't think the OP wanted a flaming for asking the question. I wore foundation from about 14- I am now mid 50s. My skin is great- but I am deathly pale and have purple circles under my eyes- hereditary.
A little light foundation makes me look human.

I think many young girls make the mistake of wearing a very matte foundation and layering it on so they look really false. Maybe they choose the wrong shades as well but so many times I see a certain "type" of teen- skinny jeans, ballet flats, long blonde messy hair, big scarf round neck, and then a really chalky-effect make up.

javo · 30/08/2011 11:59

Also agree that bourjois is good. I got Natural Collection (from boots) tinted moisturiser this summer for £1.99 and was amazed at how good it was - I even got compliments on my make up! It is more like a viscous foundation than the thin tints you usually get.

redglow · 30/08/2011 13:30

I think it is really sad that a six year old has to worry about cleansing and toning.

I think a bit of foundation can make a huge difference to somebody. Not everyone is lucky eneough not to need foundation.

moragbellingham · 30/08/2011 16:46

MyFace MyMix stuff is great.

You can get it from Boots and sometimes it's on 3 for 2.
It's £10 and the concealer is equally good. I prefer it to Diorskin nude,Teinte Miracle, YSL etc. and virtually anything else I've tried.

mrsravelstein · 30/08/2011 16:49

maybelline do a good one in a little pot which is cheap and cheerful and has good coverage

SayItIsntSo · 30/08/2011 16:55

I would suggest the MyMix foundation (found in large Boots) which is given rave reviews by people who like chanel vitalumiere. It's light and feels very expensive, gives good coverage too.
