here I read the artickle thinking gosh that sounds just like a thread I read on here recently and lo and behold . . .

OP posts:
Kestryn · 14/08/2011 10:34

Surely at the very least she owes Mumsnet the £30 fee for media requests?

applecrumbleandcream · 14/08/2011 10:44

Hmm to the suspicious of new posters comment! Don't think there are many posters here working for the Daily Mail!!

SaulGood · 14/08/2011 10:49

This happens all the time. And there's nothing to stop it. When you write on here, your comments are not protected. Any journo can wade in, take your quotes and use them to write an article.

There's an article a week, at least, in the press that quotes one of us. Matthew Whatshisface wouldn't have a programme without us and an ex-MNer started a column talking solely about MN.

SaulGood · 14/08/2011 10:52

You get lots of new posters doing it sadly apple.

"I went to a restaurant chain in Chiswick and they wouldn't swap my potato for salad and when I complained they rubbed a wet mackeral on my face. Anybody else been to this particular restaurant and had bad service? Yours, A Mum"

"Hi MN. Wondered what you girlies thought about the differences between ionic and covalent bonding. I think they're not as clear as it's been made out in Boring Science Book Edition 393838. What do regular mummies like me think about this?"

For example.

PinotsKittens · 14/08/2011 10:54

Gawd, 2nd thread today where I'm agreeing with Saul.

SaulGood · 14/08/2011 10:57

You say this like it's a bad thing. Shock

ZZZenAgain · 14/08/2011 11:00

if she didn't start the thread, just posted on it and used it for an article, I don't really have a problem with it.

SaulGood · 14/08/2011 11:04

They're fugly shoes anyway. Grin

herecomesthsun · 14/08/2011 11:09

She did start the thread.

Article: I posted my grievance on Mumsnet, the community website for mothers, to find out. Within 78 seconds, Tillyscoutsmum replied: ?I also treated myself to some Jimmy Choos for my wedding. By the end of the day, the front of the sole had come lose and was flapping around.?

Thread:

Georgieann Thu 04-Aug-11 11:08:13 I bought some new strappy sandals for my sister's wedding recently and because it was a special occasion, I splurged on a pair of Jimmy Choos. After the wedding was over, I was very disappointed to find the soles of my sandals nearly completely worn through. I had to bring them to the cobblers and pay to get some new ones soles. They cost so much above the average pair of shoes that I expected them to be pretty indestructible, but actually the opposite is true, you really have to treat designer shoes as if they are slippers. Has anybody had a similar experience ?

Tillyscoutsmum Thu 04-Aug-11 11:09:31 Yes. I treated myself to some Jimmy Choos for my wedding. By the end of the day, the front of the sole had come loose and was flapping around .

WorkingItOutAsIGo · 14/08/2011 11:09

But to really shame her, let me highlight that even tho she spent that much on her shoes she didn't take the sticky label off the soles! How naff is that.....

ZZZenAgain · 14/08/2011 11:11

ooh I see
I take that back

MrsCampbellBlack · 14/08/2011 11:12

She should have run it by mn and they're going to tell her to do so in the future - its just polite.

OP posts:
Tillyscoutsmum · 14/08/2011 11:13

Cheeky bint Shock And the replying within 78 seconds makes it look like I do nothing but Mn all day . I'm also beginning to wish my user name was slightly less obvious. My MIL reads The Dail Hate Mail

muminthemiddle · 14/08/2011 11:13

Years ago I worked in a large department store and we received money off shoes, but only "work" type shoes. Anyway I remember the sales assistant telling me that cheaper shoes were far more durable than expensive ones, which I thought was bonkers at the time. Guess she was correct then.

TattyDevine · 14/08/2011 11:23

This is why I buy fake Louboutins from dogey Chinese websites. 1/3 of the price, look identical, wear better. Make sure they take Paypal though if you ever decide to do the same! Then you are covered if they just never send it and then they don't see your credit card details.

Ponders · 14/08/2011 11:41

amelia, the 35½s are the writer's & there isn't a pic of her - the model's shoes are the well-scuffed ones & you can't see the size on those

ameliagrey · 14/08/2011 12:32

saulThis happens all the time. And there's nothing to stop it. When you write on here, your comments are not protected. Any journo can wade in, take your quotes and use them to write an article.

You are wrong.

MNHQ owns the copyright to anything posted here- which means they can reproduce anything you write- but outsiders shouldn't unless they have either been upfront and posted on the media forum, or they clear it with MNHQ if they want to use something.

I thinkit's okay to allude to a consensus of opinion on MN- I have done that myself- but to actually take comments and quote posters names is going too far.

I did get a reply back from MNHQ to say they have been in touch with JH- but I shouldn't think she gives a toss, as she'll have banked her £500-ish from the Mail.

SaulGood · 14/08/2011 12:51

But it happens all the time and while it might be wrong, it's never ever been stopped or pursued. And every time MNHQ say there's nothing they can do about it bar having a word. Just last week it was the SMOG vs DMOBs thread from a year ago that somebody was quoting from.

ameliagrey · 14/08/2011 14:09

well saul, the law around copyright is very clear- if MNHQ wated to pursue they could.

There is a difference between referring to a thread and actually taking poster's words from it along withtheir nicknames and using them without permission.

I don't know what the acronyms/ abbreviations you refer to stand for....

SaulGood · 14/08/2011 14:39

I'm sure they could pursue it if they wanted. But I wasn't commenting on the actual law as I know bugger all about it. Just confirming that time and again this happens, people complain and nothing happens. We are told to be careful about how much we share and the quoting goes on and on and on. It's been going on as long as I've been here and that's many, many, many years. Including certain quotes being attributed to the wrong poster and some fallout because of it.

ameliagrey · 14/08/2011 15:05

Being cynical...

any mention in the press is publicity for MN so I assume that is why they do not do anything to stop it.

mippy · 14/08/2011 23:32

Those shoes are fugly...and I'm not just saying that because Jimmy Choo won't do my size...:)

bibbitybobbityhat · 14/08/2011 23:51

Am amazed that so many people are surprised at this sort of thread. It happens all the time.

Mnhq were not all that bothered when an ex-mumsnetter started re-jigging entire threads from Mumsnet as her weekly column in a certain well known newspaper, without permission. Infact, they considered endorsing it.

Were none of you here in August 09?

HazeltheMcWitch · 14/08/2011 23:58

bibbity I wasn't here in Aug'09 but am keen to know who columnist was!

worldgonecrazy · 15/08/2011 08:29

I just messaged the poster to tell him/her what I think of their lazy sloppy journalism. Not that it will make any difference, but I feel much better.
