Oil cleansing method - oily skin - how long should I give it?

I am 43 and always had oily skin, tried loads of things, always been reluctant to try the OCM, but thought I'd give it a go and see what all the fuss was about. Surprised that it does actually clean the skin, but after a couple of weeks my skin is still really oily, is it a long game? will it take a long time to make any difference?

Strawberry do let us know how you get on with the jojoba.

strawberry17 · 18/08/2011 17:56

OK my jojoba has arrived so I'm going to try tonight the 80% jojobo/20% castor oil, is it ok to use jojoba on it's own sometimes?

I think I've cracked it!

Teeny, tiny amount of Castor Oil. As in "put the palm of your hand over the top of the open bottle - tip bottle up so you end up with a little circle of oil on your hand". That teeny.

Mixed with about half a tsp of Bio Oil.

Steam/wipe thoroughly.

My skin seems to LOVE Bio Oil.

PinotsKittens · 18/08/2011 19:15

What is Bio Oil actually made from?

PinotsKittens · 18/08/2011 19:15

Oh and strawb, I've been using solely jojoba until yesterday when the castor finally arrived. LOVE.

MissFoodie · 19/08/2011 11:40

Bio Oil???? I wouldn't put that on my face, it's glorified baby oil!!!!

I am using Jojoba with Castor and so far so good, no spots or reactions or anything, but no miraculous change to pores as yet......

strawberry17 · 21/08/2011 14:10

First impressions after three days, the Jojoba is much much nicer on my skin then slathering in the sunflower oil, and actually today, despite it being quite humid I haven't had to blot much at all which is unusual, might be just a bit random though, I'll see....

I am into my second week with jojoba and castor and my skin is becoming sore and dry. I don't think it's the castor because using just the jojoba on it's own has the same drying effect.

On the good side my pores have shrunk and lumps on my forehead have gone.

so... which oil to try next, I don't know if I should just break through the 2 week barrier and then see.

Bit upset because jojoba oil has such good things going for it, close to our skins natural properties, a slight spf, a big bottle in my cabinet, sigh.
glad it's working for you though strawberry17

PinotsKittens · 21/08/2011 15:46

I think you may be over-steaming thief.

Anyone more exerienced around?

strawberry17 · 21/08/2011 19:08

Oh no another strawberry LOL It's still early days for me strawberrythief.

I've been using the OCM or about 1.5 - 2 months now.

I use 30/70 castor/sweet almond oil + steaming every 3 days. just sweet almond oil and just wiping with muslin+warm water (not steaming) the other days. i do the ocm in the evening (to wash off make-up) and just wash with warm water in the morning.

I went thru the breakout phase a couple of weeks ago and nearly got scared off but the last week my skin has been fine.

i was getting slightly dry skin for a while and i think i was using the castor oil too often.

blackheads and pores much reduced compared to pre-OCM.
the thing i found made the biggest difference was to massage for 7 mins (as recommended) rather than the 2 mins or so i was doing before.

i don't find i have any oil residue at all after washing/wiping with the muslin and i have naturally oily skin.

i've tried jojoba but found it makes my eyes sore.

Pepa · 22/08/2011 05:30

CakeandRoses when you say make your eyes sore what do you mean - my eye lids have been extremely dry (almost scaley) over the last two weeks and I've been wondering whether its one of the oils I've been using...

CakeandRoses · 22/08/2011 07:53

They are red and stingy for some time afterwards whereas fine with sweet almond oil instead.

How often are you steaming and using castor oil? If it's more than 2-3 times a week then that could be the reason.

MissFoodie · 22/08/2011 10:00

that's weird as jojoba is great for removing eye make up - are you sure it's not the castor oil that's making your eyes sore?

i'm using castor oil/jojoba and steaming every day at the moment - all good....pores slightly reduced but not amazingly

PinotsKittens · 22/08/2011 10:08

MissFoodie same regime here - 80/20 and nightly steaming.

How long do you massage for?

What do you do in the mornings?

MissFoodie · 22/08/2011 11:33

I massage for a few mins - I have tried to do it for at least 7 mins to see if anything miraculous happened but I didn't notice anything...essentially, if I'm not in a rush or too tired I just sit there and do it as long as possible!
I use hot water and muslin cloth and usually apply a light moisturiser or oil afterwards too.
In the morning I use just water followed by usual day creams - I have never cleansed in the mornings though

CakeandRoses · 22/08/2011 11:47

I'm sure the 'original' ocm advice was to only do 2-3 a week but most mnetters seem to do it every day. Just sayin'

Def not the castor oil hurting my eyes as it's fine when I do the co/sweet almond oil mix

peggotty · 22/08/2011 11:53

Ooh glad I found this thread, was about to start another one about the fact I am just about to give up on OCM. I always get hormonal spots around time of period but it all seems much worse since I've been doing OCM. (I've been doing it for about 5 weeks and would have expected to have gone through the 'breakout' phase by now Sad. I feel quite disappointed with it all but maybe I've been expecting too much? I have combination skin and have been using jojoba and tiny bit of castor. Maybe I will drop back to doing it 3 times a week rather than every day.

MissFoodie · 22/08/2011 11:58

peggoty, increase the castor oil, if you have oily skin it should be at least 1 part castor to 2 jojoba

peggotty · 22/08/2011 12:03

Missfoodie, I wouldn't say my skin was hugely oily really maybe I shoul increase the castor oil a bit though but still do OCM less often?

CakeandRoses · 22/08/2011 21:34

peggotty my skin took a good 5 weeks to clear up
