do you tip your hairdresser?

Should you and do you tip your hairdresser? If so how much? 10%? 5%? Nothing? I go every 8-12 weeks for a highlights & cut and blow dry for longish hair length past my shoulders. I have been tipping but a friend said it should be built into the cost of your cut? Is this right?

I tip the girl that washes my hair £3, and my hairdresser about the same. My H tipped her £7.50 recently, on a haircut of £25 - he's a good tipper!

I dont think its patronising. Its just to say I appreciate a job well done. I dont feel the need to impress anyone. I know in some places the girls save their tips for a night out or whatever. No big deal really if others don't, its just my own way of doing things.

I also tip taxi drivers, delivery men, waiting staff, porters, the binmen and postman at xmas and the girls who work at the soft play centres if the dc have a party. So far no ones handed it back Grin

Yep I tip if I'm particularly pleased with a service. I tip my hairdresser, taxi drivers (if they help with bags) and the men who deliver my takeaways if they are quick! Most people seem to appreciate it.

I always tip mine $10. (I'm American) I don't do it to impress, I do it because I've been with her 15+ years, and I'm always really happy with the job she does. And the fact that she always cuts the DC's hair for free when she cuts mine.

Thanks for the feedback on modern etiquette on tipping the hairdresser - I'm 36 and not 20, not trying to impress, more trying to say thanks for a great job. It seems everyone does what they feel is appropriate which is the main thing.

Yes, always. My cut and colour is £53 and I tip £5. My son't haircut is £8 and I round up to £10.

I also tip the chap who delivers our takeaway - £1.

And taxi drivers get a pound or two.

And at hotels, anyone who helps us with our bags and the people whop clean our room are tipped too.

Just a way of saying thank you.

My cut/colour costs just shy of £30. I give £2 to the hairdresser and a quid to the girl who washes my hair and gets the coffee. I gave my hairdresser a fiver at Christmas to "buy herself a drink". Last of the big spenders, eh?!

Felt a bit sorry for the "junior" last time - she asked me about my holidays and I asked her about her plans. She said she wasn't going anywhere, and she said quite shyly,as if to explain, "I'm on quite a low wage". Thinking of bumping up her tip to £2 as well.

Always give 10%, sometimes rounded up a bit if particularly pleased. Only exception is with salon owners.

Glad I came on here to check this out. I just paid £140 for a fab cut and full head of headlights. I was very pleased but thought at the time that that was quite a lot of money for anyone to earn in just over an hour, including cutting someone else's hair while we waited for the colour to come off. So I decided not to tip, but felt a bit guilty so came on here for advice. Glad I did!

amothersplaceisinthewrong · 06/03/2012 21:40

I pay £110 for a cut and highlights, that is quite enough, so no, I don't tip.
