Must admit I am not very good either, would love to know how to put on eyeshadow, when you see people on TV their eye makeup always looks fab

puff · 30/11/2005 22:25

lol!

Well........I'd say visit a good department store and get one of the staff on the make up counters to do it for you. It's free, yes they like you to buy their products, but you don't have to. I always say I need to see how my skin copes with it, before I buy anything as it can be sensitive.

spidermama · 30/11/2005 22:26

Go and get a free make over. I had one recently because my 'techniques' were about 20 yeasrs out of date. It was great but I ended up spending £100 on make-up.

charlietherednosedpussy · 30/11/2005 22:26

Sigh of relief...a fellow freak Now advice please

Puff is right about the dept store - they will show you how to apply the stuff properly. It's really hard to describe in writing!

Micku5 · 30/11/2005 22:28

Just a quick suggestion..... have you tried going for a make over in one of the dept stores.

When i was having trouble finding a decent foundation (asian skin but have bad acne scars so need lots of concealer that doesn't look caked on) i went into Boots, Body Shop, John Lewis, House of Fraser etc and asked for a make over and asked for some tips on how to do it correctly.

Micku5 · 30/11/2005 22:29

ok.. got beaten to it.

spidermama · 30/11/2005 22:31

They also gave me a free DVD with how to apply tips. I just shambled in shamelessly looking like a right old dog and told her it wasn't my fault but the kids fault that things had got so bad.

puff · 30/11/2005 22:31

Agree with beety about mac - they are excellent and give you a proper tutorial. Or, if you can find a Prescriptives counter they are excellent too

It's a difficult thing to describe in writing, you really need someone to show you, because everyones skin and face are different.

charlie, my view about make up is, less is more and there are certain things its worth spending money on, other things are less important.

If you don't feel you can approach someone about all of the make up, then do seek advice about 1 thing - foundation. Get that right, get a goodquality one and you are half way there, or you might find a tinted moisturiser is enough for you.

expatinscotland · 30/11/2005 22:37

Start with the BEST primer+foundation or tinted moisturise you can afford. One really good primer is Oil of Olay Total Effects Day.

Once your primer or moisturiser is just a bit sunk in, it's time for foundation. Some folks like to use their fingers, others a sponge or foundation brush. I use a foundation brush spritzed w/a bit of Evian water out of a can and then blend w/a sponge. Blend well and invest in a good mirror

Some like to use concealers before foundation, some after. I do them after, but that's what works for me.

Next comes blusher. This you can go cheaper on. Now mine fades. So what I do is use a creme stick one first - No. 7 makes an excellent one. I blend this w/a sponge.

Then loose powder. Then powder blush. Again you can go cheap on this - I use Bourjois. Lasts for hours.

Eyes. Make sure the lids are primed. I use Clinque primer. Some use their hands, others a cotton bud. I prefer a brush.

Things not to go cheap on: foundation, concealer and brushes. Body Shop makes excellent brushes - except the blush one, I don't really care for that one - from £6-£12.50.

You can use cheaper brands for just about everything else - Bourjois and No. 7 are terrific lines.
