Home dyed hair. Why are my roots adifferent colour?

I have very dark hair that has had a reddish dye on it.

Tried to go lighter in view of impending greyness

I put a light ash brown on it which looks nice at the roots but the rest of my hair hasn't changed colour I look odd.

Any advice?

Am I better getting a hairdresser to fix it?

You probably managed to dye your roots, but not the hair with the dye - red is a really hard colour to shift, only bleach will strip it out completely and even then I've never managed to get it to do so at home.

That or the heat on your scalp helped with development, if it's a semi-permanent. Semis also don't dye over existing colour as well IIRC.

You cannot lighten hair with box dye unless it is virgin/natural hair. You cannot lift a tint with it. Only bleach (powder mixed with peroxide) will lift out previous colour.

So it has dyed your "virgin" hair at the roots but not lifted out any of the other colour.

Oh bugger.

Will the hairdresser be able to fix it?

Will it have to be completely bleached (like to blonde ) to get rid of the red?
