bottom right, called classic sculpted.

The setting is different, my partner is worried i'll hate it in a couple of years, what do you think?

ameliagrey · 24/07/2011 18:13

have you looked at Tiffany and Boodles?

Oblomov · 24/07/2011 18:15

I'm so sorry, but I thought it was really ugly.
For 12.5k you need something that people go 'wow' at surely.
Not many people spend thta kind of money.
I have 3 platinum rings. engagement ring, wedding ring and eternity ring, all made by the same jeweller. 7k altogether. But none of them are 'wow' rings.
But for that price, I really would want something special.

valiumredhead · 24/07/2011 18:18

I agreee with Oblomov BUT I think the fact you are posting means you aren't really sure yourself otherwise you'd be really sure and just go WOW!

miche8 · 24/07/2011 18:42

wow, thanks for the replies, its quite a rare/high standard (not sure of the correct term) diamond, so thats why its so expensive, we could get another diamond and bring the price down, the diamond would look the same to you and me, only a specialist could tell its quality.

I can see why it might look masculine from the photo, it didn't in real life, my worry is it doesn't look wow and like a typical engagement ring but then i didn't want anything too bling bling, its practical won't catch it, tried it with a plain wedding band - fitted well together.

I shall go and visit it again, you would think after 10 years i'd know what i want.

I have a 1.5 carat engagement ring that made me go WOW - I agree that there is no point in paying a premium because a specialist with a powerful magnifying glass can pick up an occlusion - if you can't see any imperfection and it sparkles and makes you feel WOW then it is the right ring for you is what I think

I have yet to get married though (4 kids, mortgage 20 odd years still not felt the need)

ThePetiteMummy · 24/07/2011 19:05

I think it really depends on if it suits you. My engagement ring is very dainty, and would probably look silly on a larger hand, but it looks right on me.

TattyDevine · 24/07/2011 19:06

Uh...its very overpriced for a 1ct diamond

It is lovely - and I thought as such, until I saw the price.

I like a "rubover" style designe (sort of flat and un-catchy) but that is £££ for what it is.

Get yourself a decent emerald cut for that price if it floats your boat (I'm into emerald cut)

TattyDevine · 24/07/2011 19:06

Design, even... Wine

raspberrytipple · 24/07/2011 19:08

If you love it and can afford it,have it. The fact that you have posted on here seems to say that you should go for something else. Saying that, I have a £135 engagement ring just as a token really as we have been together for years and are marrying this year. It was the nicest we could afford and that's why we bought it but it has slowly grown on more and now I love it and wouldn't be without it so it maybe that you love this ring more as the years go on rather than go off it. congratulations on your engagement btw :)

LynetteScavo · 24/07/2011 19:10

I like it, but not enough to want anyone to part with that much £££ for it.

lilbitneurotic · 24/07/2011 19:14

I think its beautiful - very classy

ameliagrey · 24/07/2011 19:17

even Tiffany who are known to be expensive, have this 1ct ring for £8.8K

valiumredhead · 24/07/2011 19:20

LOVE the Tiffany one!

ameliagrey · 24/07/2011 19:20

if money was no object, I'd have this one

KenDoddsDadsDog · 24/07/2011 19:52

That's mine AmeliaGrey!

TattyDevine · 24/07/2011 19:54

Agree with Ameliagrey but its all objective really

Whatever floats ya boat.

Oblomov · 24/07/2011 20:36

Are you in London , OP ? Because if you really have that kind of money to burn, are you not better of going to Hatton Garden and seeing all the jewellers there. then when you saw a design you liked, god, you would KNOW !!

miche8 · 24/07/2011 21:03

oblomov - no not in london and with 3 children its impossible to visit, we are right on the south coast, i'm going to visit the store again and ask to see more, i was only shown 2 types the rings aren't on display.

OP posts:
KenDoddsDadsDog · 24/07/2011 21:26

It's very similar to the Etoile except doesn't sit as 'flat' in the band. I think it's beautiful. I wouldn't get bored of it anyway Grin

Amaretti · 24/07/2011 21:32

But a one carat classic tiffany setting is only £7.5k and you'd surely never regret that?

Icoulddoitbetter · 24/07/2011 21:40

It's similar to mine in the setting and I agree with what people have said about the sparkliness. It doesn't bother me as I wanted something a bit different, and never wanted a diamond parked high on a set of claws, however sparkly it may be. My diamond is a different shape (which was part of the interest for me). It's you who'll be wearing it, not your partner, and if you love it, then it's the ring for you!

BUT...

Once you know the style you want, shop around and see if someone else can make it for less. That's exactly what I did. I'd have paid three times as much for mine at the place I originally saw it. And the platinum wasn't where the cost went, it was definitely all on the stone.

PurveyorOfBaloney · 24/07/2011 21:40

Agree with others it is way overpriced. I actually have something very similar with that rub-over design, from the top it looks incredibly similar, but the profile look on mine is much less chunky. Mine is a Boodle copy that we had made by a local jeweller and it cost WAY, WAY less than 12.5K for platinum and a similar size stone, but not so perfect (perfect to me though)

Dogsby · 24/07/2011 21:42

oh god tiffany shite

OrangeHat · 25/07/2011 09:50

South coast?

Can you get to Brighton? We went all over the place looking for my ring - including Hatton Garden - if you want more of a choice including more unusual ones I really recommend going to the lanes in brighton as they have all the usual type plus unusual ones plus loads of beautiful antique ones. I know antique isn't everyone's cup of tea but you get more for your money and it's something really unique.

I don't think you should buy one from your local jeweller where they only give you a choice of two and it's over £10K. Confused @ that TBH. Most jewellers surely have a range of engagement rings from £500 up to your price range.

ameliagrey · 25/07/2011 11:03

really kendodd- lucky you!

OP- another way is to find a designer who will make one just for you. My best friend did this and had a ring made that was half the price of what it would have cost in the shops. The designer sources the diamonds then makes the ring to your own style. She got a ring worth £4K for £2.5 K but that was over 20 years ago. Since then this guy ahs made a ring and earrings in diamonds for a friend of hers and she saved £££s.
