I have put on weight recently. A disproportionate amount on my tummy! Any tips ladies?

You are most decidedly not flabby, MTS, and you really don't need to disguise your tummy!

I wear a lot of long tops, the least flattering thing for a big tummy is a top that skims the tummy. They don't need to be big, just long.

mummytosteven · 27/11/2005 21:32

I've put on about a stone (grrr!), so am now 12 stone - so okay not enormous but far removed from sylph like! and a lot of my skirts I haven't worn for a few months don't fit now....

Thanks for the tips!

According to Trinny and Susannah, aren't you supposed to wear those tops that are ruched to cover a suspect tummy?

WigWamBam · 27/11/2005 21:34

I saw some nice tops recently that came down in a sort of point in the front, so they didn't make you look as if you were wearing one of the tents that do so well for me ... they might be the sort of thing you're looking for.

mummytosteven · 27/11/2005 21:34

not a bad idea that LM. Will have to sneak a look at their latest book next time I'm in Waterstones!

I would think that ruched tops over a tummy would probably make you look pregnant!

But hey, what do I know ...

Lonelymum · 27/11/2005 21:36

Thought the same thing the other day MTS, but couldn't even bear the idea that complete strangers would see me obviously looking for some advice on my clothing!

beansontoast · 27/11/2005 21:36

where i have dredged this top tip from gawd knows ..hold tight its a belter..

wear a scarfy decorative wotsit to 'draw the eye up'

x

I agree WWB, but I am a fan of T and S and I am sure that is what they suggest for tummy rolls.

mummytosteven · 27/11/2005 21:37

Mind you I remember in one of their books T & S suggested fishnet types for a job interview!!!

OP posts:
WigWamBam · 27/11/2005 21:37

Perhaps it's just when you get to have a tummy like mine that ruches make you look pregnant then ...

fishnet types or fishnet tights? Shouldn't think either would look good in an interview!

mummytosteven · 27/11/2005 21:38

tights. freudian slip eh?

mummytosteven · 27/11/2005 21:39

i think they forget that most people don't work in media type professions!

it would be nice to see them kitting someone out from Primark/Mark One one of these days, wouldn't it?

OP posts:
WigWamBam · 27/11/2005 21:41

Do you think they'd lower themselves? They do seem a bit ... judgmental of such places.

starlover · 27/11/2005 21:43

yeah i think it'd be great to see them show us what to wear on a budget!

so what is the general consensus on hiding flabby tummies?

NO maternity-esque ruches (whatever t and s say!)

something long, but not too tight?

Lonelymum · 27/11/2005 21:45

The thing that gets me about their shows is that they kit SAHMs in wonderful, glamorous clothes. Don't they relaise that all we are doing is cleaning the kitchen and the loo, hoovering, and fetching the kids from school? If I wear anything but jeans to do those things, I feel ludicrously over dressed.

starlover · 27/11/2005 21:47

yeah lol getting all glammed up to sit and watch this morning and empty the dishwasher!

i think they should do more casual wear, and some budget stuff...

mummytosteven · 28/11/2005 10:21

bumping in case our resident style coddess happens to have words of wisdom.... (well other than get on a diet now, you fat bloater )

Don't T and S also say that wraparound ballet-style tops (you can buy nothing but at Kew ATM) are flattering for the more generously-tummed?
Personally I find this hard to believe. Does anyone know?

NomDePlume · 28/11/2005 10:40

anything that sort of ruffles/gather/ruches at the tubby area is good, it creates a bit of a n optical illusion.

mummytosteven · 28/11/2005 10:43

oh yes, I dimly remember that about wrap around tops. Even though I am not particularly large chested, I find they just make me look bovine!

OP posts:
dingdongmeggymooonhigh · 28/11/2005 10:45

I found that when I was bigger any kind of ballet /wrap top made me look hideously chunky round the middle, more so than before, there was one exception which was a top from Monsoon which was very flattering will see if I can find it for you online.
