Upper Arm Cuff/band - to hide scar

Hi

I have a scar on my upper right arm that prevents me from wearing short-sleeved tops/dresses.

I quite like this thing Kylie is wearing in this video; , or that the girls in white are wearing, but I can't find anything.
Will it look too much like a black armband they wear during football matches, when someone has died, or can a non-popstar carry off this look?!

Am hopeless at crafts/sewing, so please don't suggest I make something!

Any idea where I can buy something similar, or any other ideas?
I don't want something too metally/jagged, as I have a baby I am always hoisting up!

tia

wwww, I applaud your bravery, and thank you for your wise words.

CMOT, a year and a half. Last year it was bright red, raw and unmissable, I knew it would calm down a bit. This year, it still feels quite bright and red, and very indented. I look misshapen.

Am intrigued to know more about this sheet dressing/putty. Do you put it on every day? What is a compression garment? By smooth, you mean it's not indented? Do you think it's too late for me?

Theres lots of different silicone dressings - the one I used was a sheet, and you are meant to wear them pretty much all day, every day (they are reusable). I think the putty is used if the scar is very indented.
A compression garment is usually made to your exact measurements, and applies an even pressure which encourages the fibroblasts (cells in the scar) to align themselves and instead of clumping up, go flat.

Yes, this particular scar (I have 8 currently) is now flat.

It would be well worth talking to your gp about whether there is anything that could help - it was my physio who suggested the silicone sheet originally, but the gp was happy to prescribe it

Thank you. I have a checkup in a few weeks anyway, I'll ask then.

Glad your scar is flat. xx

I have a keloid scar on my shoulder, from having a cyst cut out when I was about 15. I had steroid injections to make it flatter and dye laser treatment to take away the redness on the NHS. It is a lot lot better than it was and I am not so self conscious about it anymore. I also have used the silicon sheets and had make up on prescription.

It has taken me a while to come to terms with the fact that other people really don't notice it.

That sounds promising, trixy. Thanks.

And thanks so much, moonstorm. Those look good!

I have a smiliar scar TBJP - except mine is on my left leg. It looks like a very bad burn and is also very indented. If you looked at my leg you would think a big chunk has been taken out of it. I always feel like people stare at it if I'm on holiday (only time I will have my leg on show for some reason!) and I was once approached by a woman who said 'eew what on earth did u do to ure leg?' - I was mortified :( Its funny though, as I have quite a few scars - I have had lots of surgery so I have a big thick scar going down the middle of my body - it goes down from my breastbone around my belly button and down, I've got another scar that goes all the way around my ribs on the left side and round to the front and a weird kind of scar on my tummy where they must have shoved a camera in or something (!) and my csection scar but I wear a bikini on holiday without giving it a second thought! Without my scars and what they represent I wouldn't be here though. I don't know why I am so much more bothered about my leg than everywhere else. I always thought that I would prefer my leg scar to be on my arm but I guess from reading your post that it would be just as bad. I have got camouflage makeup, its the dermablend range and you can get it on prescription from your gp. I bought mine but thats because I went somewhere where they do a session with you for an hour to show you how to apply it properly. I'm not sure where you live but if you are interested, the shop is Charles Fox and its just behind Covent Garden in London. They do all the make up there for the theatre shows etc. The make up helps with my confidence and if I was on a rare occasion to go out with my leg on show I have worn my leg makeup plus flesh coloured tights and it doesnt look too bad.

OP - the idea of a large cuff is nice but consider the following (and sorry if this rains on your parade at all)

  • it may draw attention to the area
  • it would need to stay in place perfectly the whole time which often clothes and jewellery do not!
  • it may be quite uncomfortable
  • if your normal 'style' is twinset and pearls (not suggesting it is) then the cuff might be a bit odd as its quite funky/tribal really so could 'grate' with your style

However

  • it could be a sort of good half way house for you to see how you feel about your arm being scrutinised
  • its a good and funky and cool way to be different - my sister used to get a bandana and tie it around her arm and it looked very cool

Rosie, if I'd done something interesting to get this scar, like getting bitten by a shark, yeah. :)

Clucky, wow at so many scars! What on earth have you been up to!! I think arms is worse than leg, certainly for me, as I used to have my arms out far more than my legs.
I know where Charles Fox is, thanks for the tip.

msbunbury, true, but I'll give it a go and see. Hopefully with more time, the scar won't be so bright and indented anyway.
I'll get a twinset and pearls type armcuff! :)

I did think about a bandana/headscarf, but I don't think I could carry it off!

Hi. I just found this while searching for my own solution to a scar on my upper arm. My surgery was last summer and I spent most of the summer in the house with a 1 year old :( He loves being outside but I couldn't go out often and because of the scar, I didn't want to. My scar is uneven and very large. I am in search of a cuff or something to place over it. I want desperately to wear sleeveless clothing this summer and to try to get back to normal (whatever that is) I don't want to use make up because of the unevenness in the scar, it still looks bad. I think a solid cuff or a wire cuff that wraps around may work. I would love to hear where you are in your search & how you're feeling about the scar at this point. I still struggle with how badly it looks and I struggle with feeling like something has been taken from me. I know we should be proud of it & thankful for life. I am. Yet, I also want to feel like me again :/
