doing a bit of market research: what's the most you'd be willing to pay for

... a waterproof coat/jacket, if it was the ultimate 3-season school run coat = waterproof, breathable (technical fabrics not boil-in-the-bag pvc!), long enough to cover your arse, looks smart enough to potter around town in but performs equally well when walking the dogs in pouring rain.
thx

Think I paid around £120 for my 'ultimate' coat so ideally cheaper than that. Was worth it though.

HellonHeels · 12/07/2011 11:13

Blimey that covers some ground!

Hmmm I paid £190 for a Barbour with floral lining which IMO pretty much meets your criteria.

That any good?

HellonHeels · 12/07/2011 11:15

BTW my rationale for paying that much for the barbour was that it would last for ages (I hope) and it is not really fashionable as such so shouldn't date (I hope).

drowninginlaundry · 12/07/2011 11:18

that's what I mean - not fashion but something that you'll wear for years.
With outdoor clothing you get what you pay for so I was just interested to find out how important is quality and durability vs price

Probably no more than £150. I take the view that it must be fit for purpose and long lasting, so I am prepared to pay a little bit more.

JanMorrow · 12/07/2011 11:57

I think my north face coat was about £120 or something. I mostly wear it for work stuff though.

dexter73 · 12/07/2011 11:59

£150 but would have to really think about it. £120 would make it easier to buy!

gateacre1 · 12/07/2011 14:15

I think my arcteryx shell jacket was about 200 ish I have had it for nearly 5 yrs and it is still in very good condition
the cut is very flatterring. Along with my north face puffer body warmer thing they are the most used jackets I have

sue52 · 12/07/2011 14:19

If it was a really useful coat in a classic style, £200.

BigBadBear · 12/07/2011 14:23

No more than £100.

BikeRunSki · 12/07/2011 14:25

£200.

I expect a lot from my outdoor clothing. I have 2 Patagonia jackest that are 10 and 6 years old. Only bought the younger one as the first one is dark grey and people could not see me when I was skiing.

AmeliaGrey · 12/07/2011 14:33

I don't know what kind of coat would fit that bill except a Gortex waterproof with a fleece under- or a country jacket like a Barbour. It also depends if you want fashion wear or outdoor wear.

In either case, £200-£250 if it was going to last for years.

whoneedssleepanyway · 12/07/2011 14:50

I have a fantastic North face coat that has done 3 winters now, think it was between £250 and £300 but was worth every penny as very practical but looks great too.

TattyDevine · 12/07/2011 15:08

Anything up to about £200 if it were utterly perfect, reducing in a logorhytmic scale the less perfect it got Grin

drowninginlaundry · 12/07/2011 15:42

Thank you ladies, very helpful!

For just the pottering non serious type stuff you've mentioned I'd go down the Barbour route price wise say £150ish.

For serious wet weather gear - worn in serious conditions I'd go to £300. By serious I mean a non fashion led item and suitable for sailing (real), hill walking, cycling etc.

orangina · 12/07/2011 17:39

My fantastic north face winter down coat cost me about £200 but it was well worth it. Would struggle to bring myself to pay much more than that to be honest.....

aftereight · 12/07/2011 18:23

£125, but if it proved fantastic, I would be happy to buy a 2nd/3rd in other colours.
