Pinned back fringe in the over-40s - muttony or youthful?

Hair dilemma - I'm mid-40s with a longish wavyish fringe (side parting).

Some days it sits quite nicely and doesn't get in my eyes. Other days it looks too heavy and doesn't sit right, and seems to be better pinned back with a plain clip or kirby grip.

I'm always a bit self-conscious about doing this. It kind of seems to make me look younger, but then I'm afraid I'm deluding myself and in reality I look a bit mad-old-lady.

Are there rules about fringe pinning for the over 40s? I'd draw the line at a cutesy clip with a flower on it, but are plain ones okay?

A mirror and honest friends help!

MotherLoose · 09/07/2011 20:16

I agree that there shouldn't be any rules based on age but I don't want to see my Nan in a mini-skirt either.

Even though she's got good legs.

Probably better than mine.Grin

Well you know what they say about rules! Yep, they are simply there begging to be broken.

HouseOfBamboo · 10/07/2011 13:13

Well I think this dude is thumbing his nose at any 'rules' :

quiff

Still chortling at <a class="break-all" href="http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=pdxretro.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/bates-in-misery_thumb.jpg&imgrefurl=pdxretro.com/2011/06/kathy-bates-is-63-today/&usg=__o0fG8DJS-a23hHebPZtm3ZmmIdo=&h=342&w=454&sz=44&hl=en&start=94&sig2=Te5_EOm1k6Dh9z2dE6dmLw&zoom=1&tbnid=9kesV5WrXgWQvM:&tbnh=147&tbnw=207&ei=9ZUZTsrMItGp8AOaq8Ee&prev=/search%3Fq%3Dkathy%2Bbates%2Bmisery%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DX%26biw%3D1352%26bih%3D639%26tbm%3Disch&itbs=1&iact=hc&vpx=324&vpy=169&dur=301&hovh=191&hovw=254&tx=122&ty=104&page=6&ndsp=19&ved=1t:429,r:1,s:94&biw=1352&bih=639" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Kathy Bates

So which of the above will be my new role model?

personally i think any sort of hair accessory (apart from pony tail bands) look a bit weirdy on over 30s

ShoutyHamster · 10/07/2011 14:20

Better to look demented than be at the mercy of one's feckless fringe

cerealqueen · 10/07/2011 19:31

I'm 43 and often wear clips in my fringe when it just won't sit straight, sometimes two. They could be kirby grips or be decorated with flowers, have a few very pretty butterfly ones for evening, tho draw the line at the peppa pig ones. Grin.

dustyhousewithdustypeople · 10/07/2011 20:01

Pinned back fringe is definitely fine in your 40s if it suits you. It somehow emphasises my eyebags so I don't but I'm envious of you.

moragbellingham · 11/07/2011 07:52

I've just started doing it with the growing out fringe this week and was wondering the same - Do I look slightly like I've got 40 cats roaming my kitchen type thing!

daimbardiva · 11/07/2011 11:05

At school, we used to refer to the aforementioned quiff/bumps as "yuppie bumps". Haven't thought about that for years, has made me smile!

Havingkittens · 11/07/2011 11:22

I guess it depends on the quiff! I can safely say that any quiff I have sported in the past of present is definitely more inspired by rock & roll than yuppie ideals.

potterschmotter I dread to think what you'd make of me. But then again, I'd rather be referred to as a bit weirdy than look like I'm apparently "supposed to look at my age".

pointydog · 11/07/2011 11:34

We just won't know if we don't see a picture.

Chandon · 11/07/2011 11:50

at home, alone, I wear an alice band Shock....if my DH catches me wearing it, he says I look "really pretty" Shock Shock Shock

But outside the home I have a wayward longish fringe.

Or wear my sunglasses on my head Confused which only works if not sunny though.... Confused

BelleDameSansMerci · 11/07/2011 13:36

Chandon - I forgot I had my sunglasses on my head the other day and then put my specs on. About 30 mins before I realised. Great look. Not. Confused

MotherLoose · 11/07/2011 15:11

home alone with an alice band

sounds like a great title for a chick flick Grin

LordOfTheFlies · 11/07/2011 22:41

I grew out my fringe and now have a shoulderlength bob( same length all round, no layers)

IIRC I used kirby grips but with my hair in a ponytail (have to tie hair back at work)

Did think about having a fringe cut in again but on second thoughts they are a hassell
