How long does your nail varnish last when you do it yourself?

I tend to find mine only lasts 2 or 3 days if I do it myself before it starts chipping, but it lasts longer when I have a proper manicure. I use a base coat and top coat, and tend to use Nails Inc polish. Would using more expensive polish help? Any tips for long-lasting brands or hints on some magical application technique which will help? I have no idea what my manicurist does differently from me, but it's definitely something!

I use nailtiques formula 2 as a base and topcoat and sort of brush it over the ends of the nails too ifswim? find it lasts nearly a week that way as it seems to seal the edges.

I find OPI lasts longer than Nails Inc.

I find what wasabi says is true, however it seems to depend on the person.

Wash your hands and dry the nails thoroughly
Swipe with vinegar or alcohol to remove any oils
Let the base coat thoroughly dry
When you paint each coat 'wrap' the nail by taking the brush across the free edge. This would include the base and the top coat

This should all help a bit. Also use gloves for chores if you can.

I meant rubber gloves for washing up/washing floors etc and gardening gloves.

Thanks, I will try OPI, different base/top coat brushing over the edges, and gloves!
