Your "look"

Earlybird · 16/11/2005 14:30

What is your "look"? How has it evolved over the years? Is it a fashion statement (or at least an attempt to keep up with trends), or practicality driven?

Does your hair and makeup evolve with fashion trends, or do you look essentially the same as you have for years?

What does your dh/dp think of how you present yourself? How would he prefer you to look?

I've been thinking about this since seeing an article in the paper. The women featured tried on five different styles, and then said which they liked best. It was interesting to hear how often the look they liked best, was not the look their husbands liked....

I look much the same as I did 10 years ago (except for the clothes size!).
This picture (bottom left) pretty much is me. Long brown hair, denim, dressing like a student. Except I'm 32 and really feel I should start to be more grown up!
My dh likes me like this as I suppose it's how I looked when we met. When I went through a phase of wearing Boden stuff he wasn't very keen. Thinks it's boring and middle aged. At some point however I am going to have to change!

BonyM · 16/11/2005 14:40

OOh - I have that skirt above the denim one (pink check)! - DH's choice!

Miaou · 16/11/2005 14:41

Hmm. As far as dh is concerned, he is not at all interested, as long as it doesn't involved makeup or high heels etc, or wearing stuff just cos it's fashionable. Which is fine cos I feel that way myself.

Me - I'm only 5'2" and spent so many years making do with cut-down versions of clothes ... so now I only buy from petite ranges. I mostly wear jeans, but recently got some cords. I like bootleg style and will probably carry on wearing them until they are long out of fashion! Colours-wise I love berry colours, dark greens, a bit of brown. I never wear black. I have one skirt (floor length) and would like some boots but can't afford any. I am very happy with the way I look/dress.

expatinscotland · 16/11/2005 14:44

Mine's developed with my age. It's not a statment, but I have to say it's influenced by my mother, whose examples were women like Jackie O., Catherine Deneuve, Julie Christie, etc.

I don't follow trends as far as makeup is concerned - I try to use makeup that suits my skin tone (olive) and age (nearly 35) and look neutral but classic.

Same with clothes - a 'pop' of colour goes a long way.

Jewellry - I don't care for costume stuff, so I don't have much, but what I have is good quality and timeless.

My hair has gotten shorter in my 30s. Mainly b/c the texture has changed - it's quite thin - and I'm about 40% grey. So I have it professionally high/low lighted to blend in the grey every other month and have it cut every 4-6 weeks.

I love high heels - not stillettos except for going out - and wear them often now.

I'm lucky to be naturally slender, although I am small-boned and not tall - 5ft., 3in. - so I make sure my clothes don't swallow me.

I don't like looking sloppy - it makes me feel sloppy. So I don't wear trackie clothes or 'sweats' in public.

BonyM · 16/11/2005 14:44

I did a long post on your duff thread earlybird - can't be bothered to do it all again....

Miaou · 16/11/2005 14:47

Forgot about hair - mine's a bit like Anna Ford's only it's mousey brown! A tiny bit of grey, but not noticeable. I ought to get it coloured in the winter as I do look a bit washed out at this time of year.

Earlybird · 16/11/2005 17:16

BonyM - sorry about that, but my computer was doing strange things!

You should just do a cut/paste job and put the post here, as it was a good contribution to the topic...

current look - unwashed hair, baggy tracky bottoms and a sicky tee shirt - ffs I have let myself go

booooring · 16/11/2005 17:24

my friend was on dial a mum the other week - she had a makeover and said she nearly died when she saw it. made her look like a tranny. and they threw away her pvc troosers...

Blondeinlondon · 16/11/2005 18:24

I used to do fashion but now I do practicality

Current look is borderline chav - jeans, v white nikes, red tracksuit top, hoopy earrings
Accessorised with Maclaren buggy and baby without a coat or hat on

Great for blending in in certain parts of London

Eaney · 16/11/2005 18:36

I used to love to wear individual clothing, then I got boring and enjoyed dressing like a business woman. Currently I enjoy a slightly unusual look (when I can be bothered) but mostly it's comfort clothing and shoes. I often imagine a make over.

My hair is currently far too long and scraggly but I have no time for hair apt. I asked DP to cut it for me recently. He was aghast. I keep conditioning it so it isn't too bad but it aint that good. I love my walking shoes or Birkenstocks in Summer for the comfort. Oh I just remember I went through a sexy phase as well following on from a baggy shapeless phase.

Roll on the makeover.

I tend to go for fairly classic styles with the occasional nod at high fashion but would never buy something that was "in" if it didn't suit me. Found it really difficult to buy anything this summer as couldn't stand the gipsy look.

Hair has been all styles from very short to very long and is currently shoulder length. Haven't had it cut for ages - not that easy to get to the hairdressers with an 8mth baby in tow! Don't tend to colour it as I like the natural colour. Did have highlights put in last year though and totally regretted them as they weren't as natural looking as I'd wanted. They are still growing out and look a bit straw-like!

I have become a bit more "girly" since meeting and marrying dh - he loves very feminine clothes, high heels, skirts that show my knees etc. I wear more pink now! Having said that, these clothes do suit me, I guess dh has just given me the confidence to wear them.

As I am tall 5'10" I didn't wear heels in the past but now have loads because dh tends to sulk a bit if I wear flat shoes .

Have to admit though to often wearing jeans during the day for practicality but sometimes changing into a skirt before dh gets home (depending on my mood!). Maybe it's pandering to him a bit, but it puts a smile on his face .

Nightynight · 16/11/2005 21:25

Mostly trousers and tunic style tops at the moment. I try not to wear those weird type garments that have obviously never ever beein in fashion. Munich, where I am at the mo, is very stylish, you hardly ever see sweatshirt/shapeless anorak/jogging pants look, so I have sharpened up my wardrobe a bit.

beansprout · 16/11/2005 21:26

Could try harder

MrsSpoon · 16/11/2005 21:35

The older I get the more of a fashion victim I become.

Can't believe in my late teens when I had a gorgeous figure I spent most of my time in torn jeans, baggy t-shirts a long baggy purple raincoat and DM boots.

vickiyumyum · 16/11/2005 21:38

mrs spoon- snap! used to be like that too, into hippy/dippy clothes loose jeans and baggy t-shirts, or long flowing skirts with dm's and a fitted tee, huge baggy hand knitted jumpers from hippy shops that were really itchy!

now i am older and fatter i like to wear trendy clothes that are fitted but don't show off too many lumps and bumps, love shorter (not short) skirts with knee length boots and can never wait for winter to come round so that i can start wearing them again.

Rhubarb · 16/11/2005 21:40

This is me just dossing round the house. Dh thinks it's too slobbish, but I'm happy with it!

Ha! You wish!

aloha · 16/11/2005 21:50

I have to say, since I bought my boden pink coat and some new black trousers I have had so many compliments! Amazing. Today I am wearing the black trousers, pointy boots with a heel, a white v neck t-shirt with a sage green jigsaw deep v neck top in that thermal vest fabric with a velvet trim.
I used to be ultra trendy in my youth - 80s - Scott Crolla, Bodymap, tube skirts, crop tops, greek dancing shoes, 50s vintage. Made a lot of my own stuff and it didn't matter if it fell apart as was only fashionable for a week.
I go through phases. When I stop breastfeeding dd and lose some weight I shall pay more attention to clothes again. I love dresses but they are a no-no atm. Have got much more into colour with age. Find black too draining and ageing for day (near the face). Wear a lot of colour in summer. Love green. Dh likes me in dresses - he likes some of the things Susannah Constantine dresses on What Not to Wear - like bias cut skirts and crepe summer dresses.

Tortington · 16/11/2005 22:05

ive turned into "the man" anyone with a slight knowledge of the film school of rock knows what i mean. the antipathy of every rock song i loved and nodded vigorously to. am almost ashamed to admit - that i wear a suit 5 days a week. at weekends i wear jeans and whatevers clean. - thats just convenience which = mumsy

pinotgrigio · 17/11/2005 00:32

My look is defined by getting gold at weight watchers. Before (she says, sounding like the WW magazine) I would wear jeans and a baggy jumper and never bought new clothes because I looked fat. Now I try all sorts of different things.

Last night I went out in skinny jeans, boots and a jumper. Over the weekend we're going to the Gold Coast so it'll be 35' and I'll be wearing shorts (tailored) and t-shirts with thongs (flip flops, not porn thongs), a belted safari dress & a long skirt with a strapless top.

So, I don't think I have a look. I try not to be too trendy because it's a waste and doesn't necessarily suit me. I buy clothes anywhere but I don't like badly made stuff.

I'll wear skirts, dresses, trousers. Not very short skirts though, too old (35).

ghosty · 17/11/2005 00:52

I have revamped my wardrobe since I lost weight after having DD ... I was kind of in a time warp from the late 90s (pre DS) and after DD I decided to chuck out pre-kids clothes and sort myself out.
I am wearing lots of skirts and t-shirts, having introduced more colour into my wardrobe. Summer in NZ now so the flip flops are out and I have a few pairs in various colours and 'bling blingness' ... Have succombed to the accessory 'thing' ... low rise belts (see, I have been listening to the young things in the shops!), bracelets, bangles, beads round neck etc ... I like my look at the moment ...
I wish I was more adventurous with my hair. It looks nice (regular cut and colour) but has been the same sort of length since I was 20 (between long and shoulder length) ... I wish I was brave enough to have one of those funky, messy short hair cuts.
