I certainly have! I no longer wear waterfall cardigans (and find I am judging those who do), or linen trousers, sensible shoes (especially from Clarks) or sarongs.
I no longer even LOOK in Per Una, except maybe a pitying sideways glance, or in Wallis, for fear of dayglo polyester.
I have taken to wearing tapered chinos with snappy blazers, jersey dresses and leggings with summer dresses- although I think the jury is still out on that one.

Not sure if I've changed my style but I've discovered new things. Since reading S&B I've bought (and loved) Fly shoes, Janice striped dress, Anglomania, Ash boots, opened my mind to skinny jeans and Lucykate tracked me down a fab poncho I'd seen on Corrie. That's just off the top of my head. I think the links on here show you loads of new ideas. Shame my lifestyle is so unglamorous...

stelli · 07/06/2011 20:29

well i guess not yet I am still that one or may be i do not need any change in me..

Bumperlicioso · 07/06/2011 21:25

How do you tie a scarf in a European Loop with a twist

TragicallyHip · 07/06/2011 21:39

No definitely not! I have a different style to what I see on here and would wear about 10% of the clothes that I've seen linked on S&B

MarshaBrady · 07/06/2011 21:42

No. But don't do any if the mn staples.

Has helped me choose better, s&b thread.

QueeferSutherland · 07/06/2011 22:27

I've bought a few things that have been linked too.

I wear more dresses.

I've shopped in Boden a lot more.

I've been converted to Soap & Glory products. Now addicted.

I have not bought a waterfall cardi, although may still.

I only ever wear Birkies & Converse or boots anyway.Blush

CointreauVersial · 07/06/2011 22:39

Oh Bumperlicioso, you mean you don't know how to do a European Loop with a Twist?

Let me enlighten you: take a long scarf, fold it in half lengthways and hang the doubled-up scarf round your neck. For the European Loop just put the two loose ends through the loop at the other end and pull tight (pretty standard), but for the Twist...... put one end through the loop in one direction, and the other in the opposite direction, from the other side of the loop. Rearrange as required. Tres chic.

Honestly, people comment about my scarf-tying prowess (at least, I think that's what they're saying).

AnnieLobeseder · 07/06/2011 22:41

Yes. I wear more Crocs and waterfall cardigans than ever. Just to piss off the MN style police! Grin

dexter73 · 07/06/2011 22:42

I just had to go and get a scarf to try that out. It's good!

CointreauVersial · 07/06/2011 22:45

Not bad, huh? Nicer in the winter when you want to keep your decolletage snug!

Oh, the things I have MN to thank for......

MissRead · 08/06/2011 08:53

A bit, I think I've become more stylish or at least the MN accepted version of stylish!

I've been persuaded by MN to try:

Breton tops - like them on me a lot
Zara - never found anything I like in there but have persevered and found a couple of nice bits
Chinos - had no idea these could be flattering although I think having lost some weight has helped with that
Soap and Glory - some great products, some I'm not that fussed about
A trenchcoat (not sure MN can take all the credit for this one as it's on every 'classic items' list) - I got a plain black one, quite fitted and it's really flattering, makes any old jeans and t-shirt look respectable so great for chucking on when I'm in a hurry

And I no longer wear or shop in:

Mum boots - only had some for dull occasions like work things and the school run because I didn't know what else to wear. Have learnt my lesson now!

Per Una - had only ever bought the odd thing but have realised the error of my ways. I don't want to look like my Mum so it's a no for PU!

On the other hand MN will never convince me to try:

Fly London shoes/boots - just think they're ugly
Anything that costs more than a week's shopping, be it make up or clothes. Not that I wouldn't if I had the cash, just that I can't justify it at the moment

And I still wear regardless of what anyone thinks:

White Stuff - only the plainer stuff, not fond of patterns but I had a grey wool tunic from there last winter and a plain fawny coloured long tank top thing and I loved them

Clarks - think a lot of their shoes are incredibly frumpy but you can't beat them for lovely boots in my opinion, I've got a beautiful conker brown leather pair which go with anything

Converse - always have, always will. Don't think there's anything else that's quite as versatile and 'me' - I know they're a 'middle-aged mum trying to be trendy' cliche but I don't care!

Waterfall cardis - not the really really flouncy ones but I've got a plain black M&S one which is soft, comfy and because it's fairly fitted, quite flattering (I think so anyway)

Uggs - I know they're expensive (and do cost more than a week's shopping but my last pair did me 3 winters), impractical and unflattering but you can't beat them for comfort

Mogmog · 08/06/2011 09:16

CointreauVersial - I think you have changed my life forever!

AlpinePony · 08/06/2011 10:07

I haven't lived in the UK for 12 years and when I'm "home" it's deepest, darkest boondocks so S&B is great for introducing me to online shops or "new" brands that I'm not familiar with - e.g., spanked the credit card in DIAD last month. :)

As for changing my style? No way, happy with my own.

MilliONaire · 08/06/2011 10:59

CointreauVersial, I had my scarf tied in the standard European Loop as you described and have now adjusted it to the Twist version - LOVE it Grin!!!!

HaughtyChuckle · 08/06/2011 11:00

mumsnet has rules about fashion???

laptopwieldingharpy · 08/06/2011 11:32

Not much, shame i have aged, so no more minis or shorts except on a beach and barefoot

spooktrain · 08/06/2011 12:59

I hang around in the background hoping some style will brush off on me, but I still appear to be remarkably style-free.

I recently rushed, sheep-like, to purchase a pair of palazzo pants as per a thread on here, and while I love them deeply (so comfy, so swishy), I am not entirely convinced they are doing anything to up my style rating

I was going to post on the secrets thread the other day about my wardrobe being mainly composed of my mum's Per Una cast offs but decided against it

MagicFest · 08/06/2011 20:05

I have changed my style a bit, mostly because I used to work 5-6 days/wk and now, working from home, need business wear 1-2 days/month, max .....thus I never used to own a pair of jeans (hard to believe!) unless they were coloured, but as a mum they are essential;

Therefore I also wear more boots, flat shoes (gravel car park at school doesn't favour the heels I love!) and flip flops...I'm sure I'd still rather be a bare-foot gypsy though!

However I have changed my style a lot since school....Thank goodness! What was I thinking of? ! Sorry - will not post any photo's though Blush!

partyhats · 08/06/2011 21:19

Not really influenced by it although I check in most days, I find a lot of the things linked to on S&B too mumsy for me but perhaps I am just dressing too young for my age now! I like things that are slightly quirky with lots of florals and patterns. The style depicted on S&B is v classic.

Jonnyfan · 08/06/2011 22:20

Will try the European twisty thing! Don't really feel that I have been dictated too- more GUIDED- and I agree that no one should allow themselves to be dictated too. It's more about finding what suits me and that seems to be mainly plain rather than patterned, tapered rather than loose linen, and the odd Breton top from H&M. It does help that I have lost a few stone, thanks to WW.
I was so chuffed yestersay when a young colleague (some 30 years younger) said that in her opinion I am the most stylishly dressed person at work! I don't spend huge amounts; Boden/Noa Noa/White Company, etc is my limit.

Yes, I have become a more critical shopper.

What I love about S&B on Mumsnet is that you get a good mix of fantasy and pragmatism. People will link to delicate silk dresses and spindly heels but there are plenty of posts about what to wear for work and when looking after children too. I like the way people share their good and bad experiences - on many fashion forums all you get is good, good, good, buy, buy, buy. It's nice to hear the "dirt" on poor quality items and badly run shops.

Additionally, there is a good bit of wit and tongue in cheek commentary that is a refreshing antidote to the gushiness and dull marketing speak characteristic of many fashion sites.

And finally, I do like a good Boden or Per Una bashing thread.

wednesday13 · 08/06/2011 23:28

Yes, MN has encouraged me to wear skirts and dresses which I never did before. I've now got a good selection of boots (including beloved Duo's), tights and leggings to set them off. Also discovered I can wear heeled shoes if they're wedges. So thanks!
