Sheer red lipstick - any recommendations??

I know there are lots of lovely bold red ones but want a sheer/paler one if possible. Not brave enough for bright red! Clinique used to do a lovely sheer red about 10 yrs ago but I can't remember what it was called. They probably don't do it anymore though.

Anyone got a good recommendation??

TIA

Another vote for Chanel lipstick here but in Barcelona Red - is quite a plummy red. My DH bought it for me as well Grin. I know what you mean about being an adult once you wear Chanel lipsticks - yesterday DD2 (age 8) saw me putting on my Chanel lippy and was very impressed that I owned and used Chanel lipstick!

No the Clinique one is in the "Butter Shine" range. It's the range that come in a silver bamboo shaped tube. The Black Honey is more of a gloss isn't it? I used to come in a little round pot. Maybe they've reformulated it.

This one...

There seem to be a few available on there at the moment.

Hi havingkittens

Yes, all sheer lipsticks with high pigment will bleed, ultimately on everyone (not just old crones and smokers) and yes, I found Vinyl had that problem. Not wishing to teach grandmothers to suck eggs, I use a small brush and some Laura Mercier Secret Brightening powder around the edge of my lips (not a huge fan of lip pencils) to stop it.

Have another go of Illamasqua if you're passing, used as a stain (applied with fingers) I don't

Another red I love is a pigmented lip creme called Masochist by Beaute. I started watching pixiwoo and it's expensive!

One of the few products from Benefit I like is Benetint. It's a stain, they now have it in a lip friendly format with clear gloss at one end. I like it because it stays on and gives a rosy stain to lips when a full red lip seems too much.

jem1980 - I remember clinique black honey! I bought it about 15 years ago and wore it to Uni. I feel so old now.

BB Ruby Stain is lovely.
Also Nars Gipsy.
There was one called Courtesane, Laura mercier - very sheer awith some gold. Not sure they still do it, but they do have some lovely shades.
There's also I new range by Lancome I do want to try - the Nudes, it looks like there's some nice reds there as well.

Can you tell how excited I get about sheer red lipstick by the typos? Blush

moragbellingham · 27/05/2011 20:39

kittens do you buy from US websites then?

Havingkittens · 27/05/2011 23:33

No, Moragbellingham I got it at the duty free at JFK and bought a replacement on eBay.

I've not tried LM Secret Brightening Powder Ochtayaniye but use MAC prep & prime lip or a wash of their Painterly Paint pot (nude eye base) for the same purpose with my bolder lipsticks. Doesn't seem to matter with the sheer lipsticks as I don't have a defined edge/ridge to my top lip so the Slippy ones always creep, even if they work fine on others. I am happily a bold lipsticks kind of girl anyway! Just like sheer if I'm feeling low key.

I get quite dry lips since being on Roaccutane years ago so anything matte or staining (like benetint) make my lips sore and uncomfortable and can look a bit nasty too stuck to the dry bits!

Thanks for all the great suggestions, I shall make a list of them and hit the shops. Never tried Nars or Laura Mercier so that's a whole new area to explore! Am just as excited as you, coffee I can tell you. It's the thought of a new lippy! Just need to pluck up the courage to have a confident conversation with the scary make up ladies. Am sure they're not scary but I always feel a bit intimidated and unglamorous. Especially if approaching the Chanel ones! Grin
